About this property

Private cottage in a quiet garden setting. Sunny, cozy, pet-friendly.

This quiet, centrally-located property backs onto a park. North Star Cottage is a cozy storybook home with fir floors, shiplap ceilings and lots of custom wood touches. There’s a comfortable bed, a well-supplied kitchen, plush robes for guests and a loveseat on a covered porch where you look out into the lush main garden. Or, if you prefer, sit in your own private garden: there’s sun beside the roses or shade under a big cedar. Guests call it, "a sanctuary."

You don't have to take a car and drive to go for a hike. Go through the back gate and walk in the Disc Golf Park. Go out the front gate, walk a block and you're in Lively Peak Park.

This cottage operates under a legal permit from the CRD and gets exceptional reviews. It's sunny, quiet and private, The property is fully fenced so it’s safe for a quiet, friendly dog.

You'll find the kitchen fully equipped with complimentary touches like an assortment of teas, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

The linens on the queen bed are luxurious high-thread count cotton. There’s comfortable seating, a reading light, and a library. For those coming for a writing retreat, there's a custom-made desk. Please ask if you wish a typing chair.

Outside of the cottage, on the porch, is a Weber gas barbeque. On the other side is a comfy wicker loveseat. There’s a private outdoor seating area with a glass-topped table and chairs.

It’s easy to get to everywhere on the island from your central location.

It takes two minutes to drive to the ocean at Medicine Beach, to the swimming area at Magic Lake, or the Slow Coast Cafe above Medicine Beach. It's a five-minute drive to the Driftwood Center to buy groceries, fifteen minutes to the ferry, the library, the Nu-to-You thrift store, or Pender Chocolates at Hope Bay.

The main house is a hundred feet from the cottage and the owner lives on site and is available to answer questions. This is an eco-friendly property, with a small footprint on close to an acre of land. There's a pond and a wetland. The house and cottage use micro-irrigation and water-saving fixtures. Plantings have been designed by a landscape architect, cheered on by the owner, who’s a passionate gardener. Many of the bushes are bird and butterfly-friendly, and fragrant.

There's usually something in bloom here, no matter what time of year!

Great little cottage for a Pender Island getaway!
I had a lovely stay at this cottage on a solo trip to Pender Island. I visited on a very rainy weekend and the cottage was a great home away from home! The kitchen is well appointed, there are plenty of books to read, and the host was accessible by text and was friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed my stay!

10 days of bliss
We have had an amazing 10 days. What a beautiful location and so central to everything. We both have really enjoyed the wonderful peace and tranquility of your garden. Your quaint cottage had everything and more. Enjoyed sitting on the front deck to soak in the sun. Our dog Seymour was in his absolute element and to have the host dog Keria as his new buddy was the best. He loved the new freedom to explore everywhere in your garden. Zoe you have been such a warm and welcoming host. So attentive to our needs and yet very respectful of our privacy. I don't think you have seen the last of us. Until next time.

Garnet designed and built the cottage and the (slightly) bigger main house himself. Now retired, he was a carpenter for forty years.

Zoe is responsible for the gardens. As Garnet was building the main house, she was planting trees. She is an author and a retired university professor.

Kira, our Golden Doodle, is responsible for general goofiness around the place.

Why they chose this property

We bought this as an undeveloped lot with a vision in mind. This property is south-facing, so we get lots of sun. It's level, though it's level in three different plateaus. Most of the lots on Pender are very steep. We wanted to have one-storey, low to the ground Japanese-feeling buildings. We loved the amount of light this place gets, and the privacy.

It was also important to have a place that allowed for a garden. The level areas allowed this. It's been an enormous pleasure to over the years, bring our vision of this place closer to fruition.

What makes this property unique

It's parkland directly below us. It meant a lot to us that we could head off with the dog for an hour-long walk without taking a vehicle anywhere. We also fell in love with our sunny clearing on the edge of a cliff and with the sight of the fir trees etched against the sky. The buildings are oriented south to take maximum advantage to the light.

Guests tell us they enjoy how peaceful it is and how relaxed they feel hanging out on the loveseat on the porch overlooking the gardens.

The Weber gas bbq is much-used by guests.

You'll find North Star cottage very central for exploring the island.

Travellers with dogs will be glad to know that our place is fenced and your dog is quite safe in the yard.

House Rules

No smoking in the cottage.

Please make sure to park in the parking spot and leave the driveway clear. One of your hosts is a first responder with the marine search and rescue unit and may need to respond to a callout.

Please check with us if you have a pet. It must be able to get along with other dogs, not menace people, and be quiet.

For people who bring dogs, especially rescue dogs, be aware that unless you can guarantee your dog will remain silent, we will require you to take your animal with you on outings. We absolutely cannot have a howling dog in the cottage.
