Neuhaus Castle is located on a mountain high above the River Feistritz in the eastern part of Styria, offering an unspoilt view over Lake Stubenberg and the hills beyond. All rooms are south facing. The grace and charm of antique furniture are combined with modern plumbing. Pleasant indoor temperatures are guaranteed throughout the summer.
Neuhaus Castle is a medieval fortress. Having stood as a ruin for two centuries, it is currently being restored to its original splendour. Today, from June to September, 3 bedrooms, dining room, sitting room, 2 baths and kitchens on the third floor (no elevator!) as well as 1 double bedroom with bath on the first floor are provided for our guests.
Neuhaus Castle was built in the 14th century by the counts of Stubenberg, one of the oldest and most renowned nobel families of Styria. It forms part of the line of fortifications erected along the eastern border of Austria to protect the region against invading Hungarians and Turks; however, there are no reports that the castle was ever besieged or taken. Other families followed, such as the Draxler and Wurmbrand.
Bernhard Draxler undertook some major restaurations after the castle had been damaged by fire in 1541 (a gruesome legend is linked to this tragic event); the main entrance gate with his coat of arms and the machicolation above bear witness to these works. Around 1680, on the eve of the Ottoman wars, the Wurmbrands added a 100 ft. high shield-wall giving the castle its present characteristic appearance. Only a century later, they abandoned Neuhaus and moved to their newly built residence in the baroque castle of Schielleiten near-by.
In 1800, lightning set fire to the roof reducing the once prominent fortress to a romantic ruin.
Reconstruction began in 1982 with the purpose of creating a residence for the present owners, Count and Countess Vetter von der Lilie, as well as to provide accomodation for tourists who prefer the unusual to designer hotels and privacy over paper-thin hotel walls. Today, the entire 3rd floor (no lift!) consisting of three bedrooms, 2 sitting rooms, 2 bathrooms/showers and kitchens, together sleeping 7 persons, as well as a double bedroom with bath on the 1st floor, are ready to receive guests. They have the choice between preparing their own meals or to breakfast - for a little extra - with the owners.
Our 110m2 banqueting hall is newly renovated and is a perfect venue for very special events such as weddings, family reunions, corporate functions, seminars and concerts. The impressive 14th century fireplace, wooden minstrels gallery and huge feature window with panoramic views over forests to Stubenberg Lake, complete the unique atmosphere of this impresive room. The hall is self contained and has easy barrier-free access, being at ground level and located within the castle courtyard.
The exceptional location of the building on top of a mountain offers a bird’s-eye view over Lake Stubenberg and the rolling country-side bejond, a view only shared by a faithful couple of falcons and a large family of black martins. A guided tour of the premises is offered free of charge.
Having served as diplomats for 40 years in New York, Warsaw, Brussels, Paris, Bukarest and Bern, Ingrid and I are now retired enjoying life in the countryside and the comfort and charm of our medieval fortress. But we also like to have company from around the world and to share the conveniences of our house with our guests.
Mr Karl Vetter von der Lilie purchased this castle in 1982
Hello Karl and Ingrid,
Thank You again for your hospitality. It was wonderful to meet you all and share your fabulous castle with you. I hope we can stay in touch for many, many years and marvel at your ongoing renovations and
Staying at Burg Neuhaus was indeed a wonderful experience for the whole family. We had been looking for a castle to stay in during our vacation in Austria for a unique adventure. And we sure got it! Karl and Ingrid are wonderful and charming hosts who took very good care of us. They gave us a tour through the whole castle and told us many fascinating stories about their interesting life.
The rooms were clean and well-kept, very well organized, and colorful. The view from our 3rd floor apartment was stunning with the nearby Stubenbergsee and the mountains in the distance. At night, the stars were beautiful and the sky was so clear that you could see many of the constellations.
Nearby, there are numerous attractions and sights as well as many activities, including swimming in the Stubensee, a great Freizeitpark for the children, the city of Graz or the Katerloch, a limestone cave with stalagmites and stalagtites.
We truly enjoyed our stay and highly recommmend Burg Neuhaus for a special experience during your stay in Austria.
We will be back for sure!
This castle/fortress and the hosts Karl and Ingrid are the real deal.
We stayed with them for five nights in early August 2013 and it was magical. I’m the father of four children and we were traveling with our nanny. Our children are 1, 3, 4, and 5 years old. Karl and Ingrid were great with the kids!
As the listing mentions, you must be willing to walk some stairs. What I now know, is that if you want to be a princess, and live in a castle, you must walk some stairs. ?
The castle/fortress is ultra authentic and full of 200+ year old antiques.
This is an extra great choice if you like: history, military history, architecture, construction, politics or political history. Karl and Ingrid (your hosts) have led a very interesting life as the Austrian ambassador to different countries. Four years as the ambassador to the United States (in NY), six year to France (in Paris) and a bunch of other countries. They both speak fluent English as well as other languages. Be sure to plan some of your holiday time simply hanging out at the castle with Karl and Ingrid and hearing their stories.
One welcome surprise was the hiking trails. The castle is surrounded by well-marked and traveled hiking trails and the area is gorgeous.
The entire region is known for it’s outdoor adventures, the highlights being ballooning, paragliding and visiting the lake. The lake has a beautiful family beach with a water slide that worked well with our young children.
To be repetitive, I really recommend this castle as a holiday place to stay. Five stars!
Staying in this jewel of Stubenberg was the highlight of our holiday.
The castle Neuhaus stands on a hill surrounded by apple and apricot orchards, criss-crossed by pretty hiking trails. We arrived in the afternoon and were warmly greeted by our hosts, Karl and his beautiful wife Ingrid, who conveyed our luggage to our third floor apartment using a novel rope "elevator" that was quite entertaining to witness. They have managed to create a getaway that is somehow both grand and comfortable. They took extra care to make our stay memorable: finding toys to entertain our three boys; graciously treating us to a tour of the castle (including the soon-to-be restored top floors and roof which feature beautiful, if terrifying, views of the valley and lake); and providing a delicious breakfast every morning. I miss that breakfast!
There is plenty to do in the area to keep busy. We spent the days discovering the countryside, visiting Graz, enjoying the lake (which has an awesome go-kart race track), and going wine and cider tasting, but we all looked forward to getting back to the castle every night. I highly recommend it.
I agree with everything written in the review of 17th August 2011 so I can't add much. This was an unforgettable experience. As well as the superb location & amazing views, the Austrian hospitality made this a truly memorable holiday. Karl & Ingrid are very interesting people & wonderful hosts. They were very good with the children - 3 boys of 5, 7 & 9 - who need lots of space, which the castle certainly provided. I feel privileged to have had a very different & special holiday. Thank you Karl & Ingrid.
This is the perfect accomodation if you like to stay somewhere a little different and exciting. The castle is being carefully restored and the accomodation is comfortable and spacious. Burg Neuhaus is perched on a crag overlooking Stubenberg and approx. 4 miles from the lake and village. Views are spectacular but a car is essential. There are lots of stairs and no lifts so you need to be fit if you're on the third floor. The hosts provide a warm welcome, a great breakfast and advice so you get the best out of your stay in the area. Self catering is an option if you rent the 3rd floor suites which have kitchens. I will return to this property in the future and recommend it to friends
Absolut empfehlenswert!
Stubenberg, situated at the heart of the “Appleland” region of Styria, offers a mild climate and plenty of sunshine. Already Celts and Romans knew about the beauty of the place; their rich cultural heritage combined with numerous touristic attractions on the ground, in refreshing water or high up in the air make a holiday an exciting experience.
Sports: swimming, surfing or sailing in the pleasantly warm water of Lake Stubenberg, tennis, walking, hiking and jogging, ballooning and paragliding, cycling and horse riding, fishing, golf in short distance.
Health and leisure: numerous spas, Kneipping, boat trips, large animal park and rose-garden at near-by Herberstein Castle.
Excursions: along the Castle and Apple Roads or on a nostalgic steam train, stalactite caves, Graz – the Cultural Capital of Europe 2003 – is at a distance of 50 km, Vienna at 150 km.
Dining-out: good-value cuisine typical for rural Styria, wine-cellars and schnaps-breweries.
Other Activities: ballooning
