About this property

"Hanatsu" Stylish, Comfortable Gateway to the Art Islands

Experience the textures, colors and feel of Japan in relaxed comfort. This whole house is yours, set up as a relaxing base for your exploration of the 'must-see' art islands which include Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima. The house features tatami, sliding Japanese-paper doors, and unique design, as well as modern conveniences such as a burr grind coffee maker (complementary coffee) and fully equipt kitchen.
The bed is a super comfortable new Sealy bed, with high thread count cotton sheets for the most luxuriant sleeps.
Your hosts are only 30 meters away and are happy to help as much as we can, or you need. Oh, and we sport one of the best Japanese style restaurants you will find anywhere (at a fraction of the price of those in Kyoto and Tokyo) in Japan, 'Fujiwara', just down the road and the best hot pools or 'onsen' in Okayama less than 3 km from the house.

Home away from hotels
A self contained house is a delight after hotel hopping around Japan. We arrived for a 2 night stay on way to the art islands. Brett and Sayako have created a lovely retreat for travellers with a Japanese themed decor within the frame of an Aussie beach house ...that is what it reminded of. They have provided all the amenities you need - wonderful western bed, kitchen with coffee machine and all cooking utensils, great hot shower , BOSE music player and spaces to relax and enjoy the Japanese shoji screens and artefacts. Fresh towels each day and home made jam! What else could you ask for....well Brett arranged a booking in a lovely local restaurant and helped with other advice. Brett has plans for the garden and entrance which will help with arrival impressions ...we found it difficult to find using google maps but Brett came on first call and showed us the way ....thank you for a memorable stay.

Hi, I'm a long term resident of Japan (around 27 years and counting) who has moved to this piece of Japanese paradise after living in Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe etc., previously. I have studied Japanese culture extensively in Japan and New Zealand, where I was born. I love Japanese aesthetics, and have tried to incorporate what I love in your house.

Why they chose this property

You will feel like you are actually in Japan! It is always nice to experience the culture both indoors and out when you are visiting another country. And this really is the 'country'. You can actually live alongside the locals, take a walk (or bike) through the village, up the mountain, through the bamboo groves. This, of course, is a prelude to visiting the 'art islands' of Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima (our favorite), where you will have your eyes opened at the possibilities of combining art with architecture.

What makes this property unique

Guests love the almost complete use of natural materials in the house. The house was renovated, not only with the goal of relaxation in mind, but with my love of the Japanese aesthetic and interior design generally. Guests have fallen in love with the bed 'I couldn't get up in the morning' is a common refrain, as well as the 'air in' shower, which is (no exaggeration) the best I've ever had. The size of the house itself is a great surprise to those coming from the smaller scale accommodations of Tokyo and Kyoto.
