About Nancy K. Mountford
Kent and Nancy are both marine biologists who love the sea and Manasquan. Kent's family owned the original cottage, which was destroyed in 2012 by Hurricane Sandy. This cottage captures the feel of the old cottage which was over 100 years old, but with all modern conveniences. Kent is now an environmental historian and writes newspaper columns and books from both here and our home in MD. Nancy also grows orchids on a commercial level.
Nancy K. Mountford purchased this Cottage in 1980
Why Nancy K. Mountford chose Manasquan
The original house on this property was in the family for over 90 years. We rebuilt new after Hurricane Sandy, putting it up on 8 ft. pilings and making it livable year round. This part of the beach is the best surfing beach in NJ. This summer has been wonderful for renting the beach house. We will be keeping the same rates for summer 2016 as 2015 until September 15, 2015 when we will have a small increase.
What makes this Cottage unique
Fantastic views from front and back; quick walk to the water - you can take a dip and come back to the outside showers and sit in the beach front or back chairs to sun. We are the third house from the Manasquan inlet which provides an endless parade of boats to watch from either the front or back porches and balconies. Families all know each other and are very friendly Scroll down and see the weather conditions as well. The best surfing beach in NJ is right out front! Prefer family groups and no 'group' rental or large parties allowed. Must be at least 25 years old (insurance requires this).

Awesome house - Perfect location!!
My family of three had the greatest time staying here. The house is in tremendous shape! Cozy , clean and has the classic charm of an oceanfront shore house. I could stare at the views from the balcony and front porch for weeks and not get bored. The added bonus of the surfboards, boogie boards and beach chairs were a huge bonus. The owners instructions were very clear and everything went great from check in to check out. I cannot speak highly enough of how much we enjoyed our stay.
Location can't be beat!
A charming and comfortable beachfront cottage with spectacular views of the Manasquan Inlet. This lovely home has every amenity necessary to make planning and packing for a beach vacation effortless!
Great view, great location, super clean everything as advertized
The place is exactly as pictured, no surprises. Great view of the ocean from master bedroom and the river and inlet from the back bedrooms. Very comfortable and clean.
The property was clean, beautiful and perfect for the 3 of us.
This is how to make lemonade out of lemons. This family cottage was destroyed in Sandy but was rebuilt with love and attention to detail as an updated version of what I remember as a Manasquan Beach House. No oversized "mansion" here. The home is beautifully designed and constructed.
And you can't beat the view!
Our family (less our daughter who could not make it in from Boston) arrived on Saturday, July 9th – it was raining sideways. We settled in nicely and immediately became enamored with 425 1st Avenue. The home (and it is a home for the owners so please treat it as such) is beautiful! It is newly constructed having been so after the original cottage was destroyed by Super Storm Sandy. The décor is really special and includes history and remnants of the original cottage throughout its interior. Just when you think you have a thorough understanding of the history of the cottage and the surrounding area, you find another interesting tidbit of information posted somewhere. On Sunday morning the sun was shining and remained shining for the remainder of our trip! Amazing weather…….and surf! The house, the weather and the beach made this a really great vacation! The location of this property is also special being that it is the third house from the Manasquan inlet. This location is somewhat furthest away from the busier public beach access points and thus allows for more of a sense of privacy. Additionally, being able to watch the watercraft leave and enter the inlet at virtually all hours is pretty cool! Add to all of this the fact that we had the opportunity to meet Kent Mountford (owner). The many conversations with Kent were interesting, educational and gratifying! Oh……and we also met the neighbors who were so kind and welcoming! For us, this was a very special trip! Our usual trip to the tropics was put aside for a trip to Manasquan and we are happy that we made this decision, for it was truly a relaxing vacation without the hassle of the airport experience and flying. It is our intent to return and we would encourage others to consider a stay. This is a magnificent gem and needs to be treated as such.
Lovely beachfront cottage in Manasquan, NJ
My family and I rented this recently renovated (rebuilt) 3 bedroom 2 bath cottage right on the beach in Manasquan. My husband, adult son, and elderly mother and I stayed in the house over Christmas to be near my brother's family in Brick, NJ. The location was perfect. Having spent many happy childhood weekends growing up in the 60's at Manasquan, we appreciated the historical and family artifacts that were labeled and displayed around the house. The owners clearly love the area and their family property that was rebuilt after Sandy. Their touches and mementos gave the house a homey and special feel. Other than the family heirlooms, everything about the house is brand new. The heated floors were especially comfortable for a wintertime stay. The downstairs screen-porch and upstairs balconies are nice features. The master bedroom has a queen sized bed and beautiful view. The other bedrooms also have an excellent view looking back over the inlet from their balcony. The additional bedrooms are on the small side and separated only by a folding accordion partition. Each contains a trundle bed that can be left as a single or made up as two twins or a king. We had an adult in each room and made the mistake of asking for the king bed setup- which did not leave room for much else. The single twin bed setup was definitely more comfortable for one person in each room. The house is well equipped and had everything we needed. The only glitch seemed to be the hypersensitivity of the mulitple fire alarms which screeched every time we tried to cook anything in the oven or on top of the stove- although we we warned about this possibility in the very helpful renter's manual that was provided by the owners. The owners were most accommodating, responsive, and helpful. I would definitely recommend this property.
Great family beach to swim, surf, fish and walk on boardwalk. Deep sea fishing and local seafood restaurants nearby. Ride our bikes (3) into town or to Allen Wood Park . Surf board, bogey board, beach chairs all here for you to use.
