About Mary Schwabe
My husband and I are from Portland, Oregon. Paul is an Oregon native and went to college at Santa Clara, U of Oregon, and graduated from U of Oregon Law School. I grew up in Indiana, I went to a girls' boarding school in Massachusetts and U of Michigan, where I received a BA in English Lit. Later I attended Portland State where I earned a teaching certificate. My husband is a real estate broker and I am a retired high school English teacher. We live right on the Columbia River in Vancouver, Washington. We love the outdoors and enjoy travelling to NY and spending time in the Catkills. The proximity to NYC is another attraction as well as being with our family, including four grandchildren, children, sisters, and many nieces and nephews. We have several family gatherings at our chalet and my sister's property just 4 miles away.
Mary Schwabe purchased this Chalet in 1995
Why Mary Schwabe chose Eldred
We discovered our chalet when we visited my sister in the Catskills, where she has an old converted barn, pond, and large lot. We fell in love with the area and could not believe that such a place could be so close to NYC and our daughter and grandchildren. The lake reminded me of my grandparents' house is the woods, on a beautiful small lake in northern Wisconsin. I wanted my grandchildren to have the same fond memories as I had growing-up__swimming, fishing, canoeing and playing card games with my cousins who we only saw in the summers at my grandparents' cabin.
What makes this Chalet unique
Wildlife in abundance: eagles, osprey, woodpeckers, owls, flocks of wild turkeys and geese, bears, deer and little red foxes are there to entertain you. Spectacular sunrises and clear starry nights enhance a feeling of peace and well-being. If its cold and rainy you can build a cozy fire. You can take long hikes along the lake or pick blueberries along a nearby road in July. You can see a play in Forestburgh, go to the movies in Matamoras, play golf in several golf courses, attend an outdoor concert in Bethel Woods, sunbathe or read a book on the dock or go to the Barryville Farmers' Market on the weekend. What's not perfect?

Perfect Fall Destination
We had such a relaxing and peaceful time at the lake house. The weather and fall foliage was perfect. We had everything we needed at the house. I would definitely come back!
Great place with an awesome desk to hang out and have a fire. Lake views are impressive!
A home away from home
A beautiful place to have fun and unwind. The lake is full of big fish and the town is close by. We will be back for sure.
Great spot but couldn’t swim
We stayed at this lake house last year Mid July and the water was great, crystal clear! This year was totally different . The water was pea -soup, due to algal bloom. We asked the owner about it and he did call someone to check on it and said the water was safe to swim in but we decided to play it safe and not swim because other lakes in NY had been closed by the DEC for swimming due to harmful algal blooms. it’s really a shame because we ( especially my children ) were looking forward to spending the week swimming like we did last year. Plus we wanted to try our new paddle board out.
The new deck is very nice though and the house itself is comfortable and nicely decorated.
Sweet summer memories
We really enjoyed our stay on Loch Ada. The house was comfortable, inviting, and tastefully furnished - it felt like a real retreat! We had all of our meals on the deck, which was really lovely! Paul and Mary were very friendly, helpful, and a pleasure to deal with. We spent several very relaxing days on the lake. A big thanks to them for sharing their home!
SULLIVAN COUNTY CATSKILLS. This area is definitely rural, many hills and small lakes and ponds. It is never crowded and there are many activities available, especially if you like the outdoors. Artsy communities such as Barryville and Narrowsburg offer cultural experiences, Bethel Woods Center for the Perform Arts is a great attraction, the Delaware River is beautiful and scenic, plus it offers rafting, canoeing, tubing, hiking, and fishing. Opening in February is the glamorous casino in nearby Monticello.
