Why Lorenzo and Heidi Bouillet chose Béziers

After spending several spring vacations in the south of France and Spain we fell in love with the oldest city in France, Beziers! The friendliness of the people can not be overstated, Heidi and I feel at home as the welcome is as warm as in our Mexico.

French living at its best!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this apartment. Beautifully decorated with old French charm in the Old City Center of Béziers. Close to Brasseries, grocery store, cafes, shopping and cathedral. Don’t try to drive up to the apartment. Very narrow streets! Park at closest Public parking and walk to apartment.

Clean, comfortable and beautiful apartment

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed my stay here. Beautiful, clean and comfortable apartment in a great location near historical landmarks and great restaurants. The apartment had everything we needed which was perfect when we didn't feel like going out for dinner. Walking distance to anything you need such as the grocery, wine store, restaurants, and the marche where you can buy all kinds of french food and delicacies. Be sure to visit the church and climb to the top for an amazing view. Would definitely recommend staying here and will absolutely be back!

Beautiful apartment, and great central location for your trip

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I could not be happier staying at this beautiful, fully furnished apartment in the heart of Bezier, with our 2 daughters. Everything was clean, and the location was perfect for our needs. We planned on visiting the countryside and a few historic towns like Pezenas, Sete and, of course, the Cite de Carcassonne. The apartment was centrally located with a short drive to the beach. Stayed: June 2016

Car: not necessary

The main thing to do in Beziers is simply to wander through the old streets, admiring the architecture, browsing in the shops and stopping at a café to watch the world go by. There are between 20 and 30 restaurants and cafe's within 10 minutes from the apartment! As you explore you will discover several sights and places of interest.

However if you have a car there is an underground secure Public parking facility at Les Halles/Madelaine just 4 blocks away.

To make sure you see as many of the sights of interest as possible first go to the tourist office, which is 2 blocks from the apartment in front of City Hall, where you can pick up a tourist leaflet offering four different walking routes covering the main sights of the town. Béziers is a city with more than 2,000 years of history. The ancient city of Colonia Julia Baeterrae Septimanorum was founded in 36/35 BC and its golden age began in the years later. The compact town of Béziers is easy to get around, and the ideal way to explore is on foot. Béziers is France, and yet it is a culture unto itself. It was an important city of the ancient Roman Empire and its legacy of monuments can be admired in the streets to this day. From the tourist guide you can choose from:

- Between Romanesque and Gothic- see the cathedral and cloister, the town’s churches and chapel and St Aphrodise’s basilica.

- Beziers Over the Centuries - passes along the winding streets of the old city of Beziers and some of its historical monuments.

- The Golden Age of the 19th Century - explores the public and private buildings built during the 19th century

- A Stroll through the Gardens - wander through a selection of English style landscaped gardens and formal French-style gardens.

Saint Nazaire Cathedral dominates the view of Beziers from below and is one block from the luxury apartment, It was built in the 12-15th centuries and has quite an unusual appearance. It has some interesting castle-like towers. It also has a lovely 14th century cloister and a pretty ‘Bishop’s Garden’ with great views over the valley below .

North-east of the cathedral in Place de la Madeleine is the Eglise Saint Madeleine(St Madeleine’s Church). As the town of Beziers fell to the Albigeois Crusaders the Catholics in the town, who had remained to fight off the crusaders along with the Cathars, fled into the church. However the crusaders showed no mercy even to their fellow Catholics and torched the church and burnt all within.

The Church of Saint-Jacques is an attractive Roman style church dating in part from the 12th century. While the church itself is interesting it is the views across the town and down to the river and bridge from the terrace that are the main highlights of the church.

Outside the medieval streets one of the main streets in the town is the Allées Paul Riquet which is a long esplanade, shaded by trees, lined with shops and cafes and filled with a variety of street art such as living statues (rather like the Ramblas in Barcelona) there are flower, Antique and local produce fairs .

At one end of the Allées is the 19th century theatre and at the other the lovely garden, the Plateau des Poetes.

There are four museums in downtown Beziers...

Le Musee des Beaux Arts (Hotel Fabregat just a few doors from the apartment): a collection of paintings including works by Decamps, Degas and Rodin

Le Musee des Beaux Arts (Hotel Fayet): a collection of sculptures by local artist Jean-Antoine Injalbert. There is a very pleasant internal courtyard where you can listen to concerts and theatre productions.

Le Musee du Biterrois: a museum with artefacts ranging from prehistoric to nowadays.

Le Museum d’Histoire Naturelle: diverse collections of natural history.

and two art galleries in Beziers

Espace Taurin: dedicated to bull fighting including some works by Goya

Espace Riquet: an ancient convent which is now a contemporary art museum.

Local highlights

Near the town is the Fonseranes Canal Lock, a succession of seven locks allowing boats to manoeuvre a 21 meter level change. This lock is the most remarkable on the Canal du Midi.

The Museum and archaeological site at Enserune gives an interesting insight into life in the region dating back more than 2500 years.

Further afield the destinations are quite different in character depending which direction you travel: to the north the attractive countryside is interspersed with charming small towns such as Roquebrun; to the south and east along the coast you have seaside resorts, with the most visited being Cap d'Agde; and to the west you can explore the historic centre of Narbonne and the castle at Carcasonne.

For winter activity skiing nearby is excellent The nearest places would be the Pyrenees Orientales resorts. Count a minimum of 1.5 hours to get there by car and make sure snow chains/tires are provided. Winter in Beziers is quite agreeable with daytime highs between 10 and 15C.
