About Colleen

Our family retired from the military at Ft. Bragg, NC in 2006 and moved to Alaska to finish raising our children. Randy started his second career working for the state on the Alaska Marine Highway (ferry system), and Colleen started a very rewarding job working for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MatSu) as a firefighter. That job excelled over the next six years to becoming an engineer with West Lakes Fire Department and an EMT. Our children are grown and live nearby with grandchildren arriving yearly:)

Colleen purchased this house in 2006

Why Colleen chose Wasilla

We recently secured jobs out of state that may become permanent. However, we're not ready to sell our house yet. We've put years into upgrading it, and we just love our home. We receive a lot compliments, and people wonder why we would ever want to leave. We're trying something new in our new found empty nest status, and are hoping to share some of the beauty and comfort of our home with others to enjoy.

What makes this house unique

We believe we have the best location on the lake for views and access. The lake is a peaceful wildlife breeding area with no loud speedboats or jet skis, although it becomes a roadway for snowmachiners in the winter. The lake freezes to about 2 feet thick making it a perfect place to ice fish, cross-country ski, or snow shoe. There is also a snow machine, ATV, and camper rental dealer in Wasilla for the very adventurous vacationers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My family (group of 7) stayed at this property in June 2017. It was hard to leave when it was time. Most of the time on vacation I don't get attached to the place we're staying but this was different. We felt at home as soon as we walked in. This is a very nice house with great views. It was also extremely clean. Especially the bathrooms which are usually not cleaned to suit me. They were spotless. It was stocked with toilet paper, paper towels, etc. Not just the usual extra roll, much more than we needed. The kitchen is nice and well stocked with quality cookware and utensils. I wish I would've had a day to kill to just sit in the living room. It was extremely comfortable. We used the canoe that is provided on the lake many times. The kids loved it. This is a good location for sightseeing. It is about as centrally located as you can get to travel to Denali, Kenai Fjords, Whittier and Seward. It is a 2 minute drive to a nice grocery, a gas station and a couple restaurants which was very handy. Colleen the owner was exceptional to deal with. Any time I had a question she responded quickly. They definitely take pride in their home and it shows. I have rented on VRBO/HomeAway 20+ times and have always had good luck but this was by far the best experience yet. I highly recommend this property. If you are disappointed staying here then you likely will not be satisfied anywhere.

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for my colleagues and I. We were here for twelve nights and the house is comfortable, cozy, clean and well stocked. We enjoyed the view of the mountains and the frozen lake!! We even saw a moose in the neighborhood. Colleen and Brandi were very responsive and helpful. We are already looking forward to next year!!

An amazing experience that feels like home

  • 5 of 5

When you enter this beautiful house you immediately know that it was intended to be a home. Everything is quality and the greeting book answers questions that you didn't even know you had. I will definitely bring my family to enjoy the summer in this place next time.

Great stay and helpful host

  • 5 of 5

Colleen was very accommodating for our film crew, who stayed here for several days while filming in the Wasilla/Anchorage area. Incredibly helpful and flexible and the house was beautiful, spacious, and comfortable. Thanks so much for everything!

Felt completely at home.

  • 5 of 5

I have done many trips using HomeAway in the past and I must say my experience with Colleen and this location was amazing. She was incredibly responsive and accommodating. I traveled from the Massachusetts to Alaska with my two month old and two year old and she was able to provide us with a high chair, baby gates, and a pack n play. Her home was clean, easy to find, and the views from the huge deck were incredible. The location of this home was perfect for us and close to many amenities. Thank you Colleen for sharing your home and the wonderful experience!
