Overview

About the property

Bungalow is set on a unique 3 acre piece of land with amazing lava rock features

Beautiful and unique getaway in Ka'u, Hawaii, with a view of the southernmost tip of the United States at Southpoint, Hawaii. A wonderful place to stop between Kona and Hilo or the volcano, or to stop and stay longer for a relaxing time away from the crowds and noise. You'll feel refreshed and re-energized by the quiet and serenity. The stargazing at night is incredible and the sunsets magnificent. Sunrises, if you enjoy the early morning are also gorgeous.

The bungalow is ideal for 2 people. There is a queen size bed, (shown in the pictures) with a pillowtop mattress.

Hibiscus Bungalow has been created with a unique eclectic style giving it a retro tropical feeling. Beautiful tropical woods have been used extensively in the details. The kitchen has a 7’ long bar made from a 2” thick lychee wood slab with a live edge, the bathroom contains a 7’ long vanity made of avocado wood, all the windowsills are mango or lychee wood and the 10’ wide lanai facing the ocean is faced with mango wood.

The walk in shower is tiled in spa colored penny tiles and glass block walls with a pebble floor. A large jalousie window looks out into the garden.

The bungalow is a special and romantic place where you can be centrally located to explore the Big Island, and at the same time be away from the crowded resorts, congestion and traffic of the busy city areas. Wake up every morning to the sound of the birds in the Ohi'a trees outside the windows. Sit on the lanai sipping your morning coffee or tea, while watching the ocean and sky lighting up with color

Here you'll see the real Hawaii, where the land is new and the landscape is undeniably dramatic. 10 minutes away are the Kula Kai Caverns, where you can go on guided tours. ½ hour drive gets you to Ka Lae, (Southpoint) where the braver people jump off the cliff and drop 50’ into the ocean below, then climb up a rusty old ladder to do it again perhaps. The famous Green Sand Beach is also down at the end of Southpoint Road. The beach is about a 3 mile hike in, or you can pay one of the locals who charge $15 to drive you to it.

20 minutes away from us are the old and beautifully unchanged little towns of Waiohinu (Shiny Water in Hawaiian) and Na’alehu (meaning the volcanic ashes). This is a gorgeous piece of old Hawaii like you will rarely see. This was a favorite hangout for Mark Twain, who wrote about the area in his Letters from Hawaii, when he was a reporter for

Just a half hour drive away, you’ll be at beautiful Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, where you’ll see the sea turtles basking in the sun. We are 1 hour away from Kona and 1 hour the opposite direction is Volcanoes National Park.

About Sandra Mayville

We bought our land here in 2011 and built a small house to live in and then the bungalow, for guests. We both love Hawaii and plan on being permanent residents here. We love plants and trees and have done lots of landscaping. We have planted fruit trees and vines, asparagus and arugula, koa trees, Monterey pines, palms of different kinds, orchids, bromeliads, cactus, roses and lots of hibiscus. Hibiscus is my favorite flower, and we live on Hibiscus Drive. Naturally, we had to name our place Hibiscus Bungalows. Besides loving Hawaii, we love to travel. So far, Asia and Europe, and looking forward to doing more exploring.

Sandra Mayville purchased this bungalow in 2011

Why Sandra Mayville chose Ocean View

The setting here is so unique. We are located on the southwest flank of Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano. Don't worry, it isn't spewing anywhere around us at this time. The lava flow we live on is hundreds of years old. We have amazing dramatic lava rocks. They are like sculptures. The layered lava balls are fascinating chunks of geological history. This link will take you to a paper that will tell you all about it.

http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/FACULTY/ROWLAND/pdfs/Pohue_Bay_flow.pdf

Besides the layered lava balls, there is the sunrise, the sunset, the views and the beautiful fragrance of the passion flowers and plumeria.

What makes this bungalow unique

Custom bathroom with tiled walk-in shower, seat, niches and glass block walls. Views of ocean and gardens from inside the shower, through jalousie windows. The vanity is a 7' long piece of avocado wood with a natural edge, from the Big Island. You'll feel like you're showering at an exclusive spa.

There is a custom bar made out of local lychee wood, where you can relax and enjoy the view.

On the lanai, where you see the gorgeous view of the coast starting at Southpoint, the exterior wall facing the ocean is faced with mango wood.

All of the window sills inside are either mango or lychee wood.

The décor is eclectic, combining tropical décor, stained glass wall sconces, and ceiling fans inside and out.

Absolutely fantastic place! Perfect out of the way location yet close enough to Ocean View!l

  • 5 of 5

April 19-29 2018. We could not be happier to have chosen to stay at the Hibiscus Bungalo at Ocean View for our entire stay on the Big Island. The Bungalo is perfect in everyway! Early morning coffee on the Lanai and then cocktails there in the evenings! Fred and Sandy are wonderful hosts who offer .its of suggestions of things to see and do and even allowed us to use their beach chairs and umbrella as well as a cooler for our daily travels. The location was perfect for exploring the southern part of the Island. The kitchen is furnished just right...if you choose to BBQ or cool inside. We usually did breakfast there And bought snacks or .inches along the way. The BBQ place in town was great for a to go meal to enjoy at the Bungalo. The Pizza Place is also good and the coffee shop makes great wraps and sandwiches! Definite.y want to go back there again to finish what we ran out of time to do!

We loved the house! It's very clean and comfortable, we haven't slept this well in years.

The view is great, it's a quiet location and everything is perfect just to relax.

Ocean View has a few shops and restaurants that can provide everything you need.

A Real Gem

  • 5 of 5

Hibiscus Bungalow was perfect. We loved the openness — waking up in the morning, looking out at the view from bed, was a great way to start the day. We really appreciated the thoughtful touches — the very attractive and functional bedside reading lamps that dim, small night lights to plug in where you need them, bandaids, complimentary drinks and condiments in the refrigerator, the interesting book on the history of the island, the outdoor lighting at night — these things really told us that Sandy and Fred are thinking about their guests’ comfort. The lanai was a wonderful spot to enjoy the beautiful and unique view and appreciate Sandy and Fred’s landscaping. They are creating an oasis in the lava field.

Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Hibiscus Bungalow for nine nights in March. The bungalow was perfect for us and was well equipped for us to be able to make several meals. The Wifi worked great and the hot tub was lovely to relax in at night. We especially enjoyed the peace and quiet that this side of the island offers. It's also very convenient to VNP for an evening viewing of the lava flow and the Kahuhu Ranch is just down the road(open F, Sat. and Sun. only).

Endless veiws and relaxation

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the hibiscus bungalows. It's far enough away from the hustle and bustle, but close enough to everything to experience all the big island has to offer. We loved relaxing on the lanai and star gazing from the hot tub. Fred and Sandy are wonderful hosts who have thought of everything! (Cooler, chairs, snorkel gear, ect.)

Beautiful vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Hibiscus Bungalow in Feb 2018, for a few days while visiting the Big Island. I travel for business, and have stayed in many VRBO properties. This was, by far, the crowning gem. Sandy and Fred were gracious hosts, and they have thought of everything. The cabin had everything we needed and more, and their suggestions of sights to see were absolutely on point. Stargazing in the hot tub after long days exploring and hiking was the highlight of our trip! The woodwork and finishing touches in the house were right on point, and sho the level of care for this property. We are already talking about planning our next visit!!!
