Renter Beware

  • 2 of 5

There are just too many issues concerning this rental that can be adequately and fairly described using this site's 2500 character limit. But other renters need to know:

1. There is no air conditioning of any kind in any of the houses included on the site. In August in NM, no matter what the altitude of the site, it got uncomfortably hot in all the houses. One of our guests had medical issues aggravated by the heat, forcing the family to move into Santa Fe to a local Motel. If we would have known that the house's had no A/C, we absolutely would not have rented this property. The Ceiling fans provided good circulation of cool air only in the early morning hours, but as the houses heated up during the day, they just moved hot air. Not all of the windows opened in the houses, the screen doors were bent and let in hoards of insects. There were few blinds or shades available to help the cooling of the houses. 2. As has been detailed in other reviews of this property, the road into the site is truly crazy steep and rough. We recommend renting a sturdy vehicle, especially when bad weather is anticipated. 3. All the major appliances in the houses need replacing or serious maintenance. The main house's refrigerator's cooling ability was barely adequate and it makes very little ice. The dishwasher was replaced while we were there after being without one for 5 days. Both clothes washers show error codes indicating drain problems and the dryer in the main house takes hours to completely dry a load of laundry. 4. The larger casita is inundated with spiders. 5. There was one small flat screen TV in the main house that is supplied with DirecTV and barely adequate WIFI. The other casitas had TV's but, even though the main house had three satellite dishes on top of the roof, there was no cable service or WIFI coverage to either casita. 6. As was detailed in other reviews of this property, the bushes surrounding the house continue to be overgrown and tend to obstruct the views that one might have of the area. 7. The one bright spot in this rental was the property Manager Amanda. She was responsive and did what she could as she could given the fact of an absentee owner. She even went out and bought three hair dryers and personally delivered them to the main house the next morning after our arrival. She's a true professional and can't be held liable for all of the properties shortcomings. We will not be renting this property again.

Remote site near Santa Fe

Lots of room! We had 18 family members (8 from Texas and 10 from Colorado) and there were plenty of beds for all. We were celebrating my husband's 80th birthday with his sisters and our daughters families. We mostly gathered in the large main house where there was plenty of common space and delightful verandas. Cautions: The road is somewhat treacherous - unpaved and with lots of ups and downs (might need AWD in rain or snow - signs indicated some of the low spots flood). The "bunk house" had a lot of spiders that freaked out my granddaughters. The walk from the "guest house" was uphill and a challenge for a 70+ year old with mobility issues. Suggestions: replace faucet in main house kitchen SOON! Also, have property manager check TVs and internet service/cable prior to arrivals so they can warn guests (we had no internet service during our visit). One more thing, the shower door in the the master bedroom was pretty disgusting with soap scum/streaks - could have used a good cleaning. Overall, we had a wonderful time.

Well situated and well suited to a large group

  • 4 of 5

Reunion with about 15 people had a very nice time. The property is well situated - remote but close enough to Santa Fe to easily make trips to town. The driveway in is a challenge due to steep hills, but is reasonably well maintained. The property itself is a little shopworn, but not bad, and generally comfortable with multiple locations for gathering. The property manager was very pleasant and responsive - making a special trip out to resupply propane for the grill.

Beautiful private location but still close to everything

  • 5 of 5

About 18 of my family members recently had a fantastic week’s vacation at this property and we all loved it. From my initial contacts with the owner to the property managers, Amanda and Fred, all details were handled smoothly and quickly. The property is remote — about 15 minutes north of Sante Fe — which we enjoyed but easy driving to downtown, Bandalier National Monument, Taos, and lots of other places of interest. The compound has three separate buildings which works out great if some folks are late sleepers or have children. The Big House has the huge great room where the family congregated most of the time. The well-equppied kitchen in the main house was put to good use and there’s a second kitchen in the 2-bedroom Artists’ Studio building. One word of advice: rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle if possible. The road from the paved street to the compound is about a mile long dirt road that’s pretty steep in places. The Loft building between the Big House and Artists Studio has 4 bedrooms, 2 baths and a living room which provides more privacy if needed. I would highly recommend this VRBO to any large family that wants to get together in an exotic but still accessible location. Great property, amenities and service with plenty of room to roam. Thanks again to Walter, Amanda and Fred for the use of this beautiful home and the warm hospitality.

Location is great

  • 4 of 5

The location is great but the houses needed some basic maintenance items like light bulbs replaced, smoke detector batteries replaced and loose door knobs tightened.

The road into the facility could use some maintenance as well.

We had a great time at the facility dispite the above.

Great place to gather for family gatherings.

  • 4 of 5

Overall, we had a great time.

The three homes on the property are close to each other. The middle one has no kitchen. It mainly is used for sleeping, with a nice sized living area that connects to the bedrooms. There is a small fire pit outside of it.

All the beds were comfortable, and the bathrooms well-stocked.

The landscape is quite natural, which adds to the places' charm. We picked peaches from the trees, and once we let them ripen, they were delicious.

It should be noted that the dirt road to the place is very steep. If we would have known this, we all definitely would have rented more substantial vehicles.

We also would have appreciated a better stocked kitchen in the main house.

Only one tv worked.

The phone coverage was weak in the smaller units.

The place is not at all far from Sante Fe and other cities we wanted to explore. We also were able to go white-water rafting and explore ancient Native American ruins. Both opportunities helped to make the trip memorable.
