Our unique homes are divided into three floors. On the first floor you'll find the kitchen and dining area with everything you'll need to prepare and enjoy your own meals. The first floor also has the shower/bath and a separate toilet. The dining room table and chars all fold and can be stored on the wall should you need some extra space.

The second floor is completely Japanese-style tatami flooring. It has one bedroom with Japanese futon bedding and a small area on the landing with a comfortable chair for reading and relaxing.

The third floor is our Western-style living room/ bedroom with a twin bed and a sofa that can be converted into another bed. The table in front of the home theater PC swings out to be used as a desk. Grab the wireless keyboard/trackball and lounge on the sofas while enjoying free Netflix access!

Great owner and spacious place

  • 5 of 5

Really loved the owner of this property. He took the time to give detailed instructions to meet him in-person before heading to the property. I liked meeting him in-person vs just having a key code to get in, felt more personal. He has several properties and when the one we selected had an incident due to the weather in Kyoto, he quickly offered his other place, so it took a lot of stress off of us having to find something. We ended up at his place with two bedrooms, one western and one Japanese style. It was a lot of space, would have been good for 4 people. He also gave us a walk-through of the place and helped us with how to control AC etc. Great host and the place we stayed at (the inn) was in a good location to get around town, just a 10 min walk to the train. Would stay again!

Property was clean and comfortable.

  • 3 of 5

Property is really designed to accommodate 2 adults only, not really suitable for a family. A very tight fit but very clean and comfortable all the same.

Cute little house tucked away in Kyoto, felt very authentic, close to restaurants, great owner

  • 4 of 5

Jesse was a great owner. We walked to his little cafe from the Kyoto Station. He bought us all a drink. We greatly appreciated that! After filling out the forms, he drove us himself to the rental.

He walked us around the rental and explained how things worked. It was really nice to have a tour.

The rental house is down a narrow road. He has 2 separate rental houses right next to each other. I'm not sure if they were originally one big home and he divided them in two? In any case, we rented the one on the right.

We had a family of four. The first floor has the bathroom, shower and tub, kitchen, small kitchen table for 2 to 3 people (although there are a lot of chairs). There was a washing machine on the narrow deck out back. We were desperate to wash clothes, so we were grateful for it. My husband would take 2 washed loads and dry them in 20 minutes at a close laundry mat. (I didn't see one dryer in the 5 places we stayed in Japan. It's normal.) I have to admit, I did feel a little claustrophobic in the kitchen/first floor. However, let's face it, if you're vacationing to Japan, you're not going to be spending much time in your rental! We were gone a lot of the time!

My husband and I stayed in a room on the 2nd floor. It felt very authentic. I had a tatami mat flooring. We slept in a room with a sliding door, good a/c, and there were two fluffy mats on the floor. The only problem was I had a bad cold, so every time I needed to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I had to go down the steep flight on stairs to the bathroom on the first floor. That was really my own problem, not a problem with the house.

Our two kids, a 23 and 16 year old, stayed on the top floor. They had a ball. They had a TV, good a/c, and it was the biggest "loft" by far that we had seen in Japan. I'd say it felt more like a third floor than a loft.

Overall, this house was a great value. There was a JR train station a little ways to the right (about a 10 minute walk). We ended up taking the bus a lot there. The buses go everywhere and we easy to figure out. When I first looked at Homeaway, I found most of the places in Kyoto were much more expensive than other places like Osaka and Tokyo. When I saw the reasonable price on this rental, and the good reviews, it was a no-brainer. After staying here in person, I'm very happy we stayed here.

Clean, compact and highly functional, just like everything else in Japan!

  • 4 of 5

We loved the convenience of the location, the quite and calm neighbourhood. The house is very compact but highly functional. We can do just about everything(maybe not Yoga and hold big parties)that we do at ours. Owners are super friendly and helpful. They thought about little details that saved us troubles. Anyways, we loved it!

Wonderful Stay in Kyoto with a fantastic host!

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent 5 nights at Jesse's house in Kyoto. From booking to check out - Jesse was very responsive to all questions and remained flexible while our arrival plans changed. He has a great café Shiba Raku, where we met to go over the check in process. We enjoyed complimentary drinks while he showed us highlights of the city and gave us tips and hints on how to get around Kyoto. He brought us to the house to make sure we had enough linens/towels for all 5 of us. The house itself is in a great location, less than a 5 minute walk to the nearest bus stop, 24 hour grocery store, pizza place and laundry mat. It was a bonus to learn that Jesse had recently purchased a washing machine for the house. The house has everything you need! My sons loved the 3rd floor bedroom where they could relax and enjoy Netflix after a long day of walking. My husband and I enjoyed the second story Japanese style bedroom along with the nice relaxing reading area. We would love to return to Kyoto and would definitely stay in Jesse's apartment again!

Nearest Airport
100 Kilometres
Kansai International Airport
Nearest Train
400 Metres
Hankyu Omiya
Car: not necessary

I love our neighborhood! It's super convenient with tons of delicious local restaurants, a 24/7 super market, and unique cultural attractions such as MIbu Temple and Kyoto city's largest onsen (public bath). Also, the nearby laundromat offers a convenient way to clean and dry your clothes since residential dryers are almost unheard of in Japan.

Just a few minutes walk East on Shijo Dori will take you to Kyoto's downtown shopping district. Between Karasuma Dori in the West and the river in the East this area is packed with high-end stores, souvenir shops, bars, restaurants, and the city's largest and oldest department stores.

Head North on Senbon Dori and you'll hit the Sanjo Shotengai covered shopping arcade. Here you'll find dozens of excellent cafes, restaurants, and shops as yet undiscovered by the tourist hordes. The bento at Meat Shop Hiro, Kyoto's most famous butcher shop, on the western end of the arcade is a must.

A 20 minute walk South on Senbon Dori will take you to the Kyoto fish market where you can get excellent sushi at decent prices. Also in the same area is Umekoji Park, a massive park with some truly beautiful gardens.

The Mibudera-michi bus stop is a few hundred meters from the house. From there you can access all of the city's most famous tourist spots.

Nearby Omiya station services two train lines. The Hankyu Kyoto line offers easy access to downtown and transfer to the subway system. It's also the quickest and cheapest way to get to Osaka from Kyoto. Also at Omiya the Kyofuku Arashiyama Line is the easiest way to get to Kyoto's beautiful and historic Arashiyama district. Arashiyama's attractions include stunning bamboo forests, many temples and shrines, and Monkey Mountain if you want to interact with real, wild (slightly terrifying!) Japanese monkeys.

JR Tanbaguchi Station is a 10 minute walk from the house, convenient for rail pass holders who prefer to travel by JR lines.
