Overview

About the property

Cozy newly renovated boathouse cottage, 3 bedrooms, beautiful surroundings

A rustic boathouse on the water's edge has been converted into a lovely cottage, suitable for families, couples or a singular retreat. The boathouse is about 80 years old and has a lot of character. The terrain is sloped with the living area, build in kitchen and wood stove at the lower water level; the three bedrooms and bathroom are at the upper level, which has a wrap-around porch as well. The floors are connected by interior and exterior stairs. The main entrance is at the upper level.

The big sliding doors allow you to use the outside area easily and walk up the pier any time you want to. The surroundings, the tranquility, the stars at night, the slow ever changing movements of the water, it is all there for you to enjoy.

You can stroll the small beach at low tide or climb the rocks around it. You can even bring your canoe and launch it right at the house. Shore birds, seals, ospreys and wild turkeys. Nearby a bed and breakfast that also serves as a fine restaurant serving locally sourced seafood, meats, and produce picked fresh from the farm. A mere short drive from Damariscotta and Wiscasset, which is known for the best lobster rolls in the state.

Close to Reid State Park and Popham Beach State Park.

Please be aware with small children that the house is at the water.

About Caroline Elbers

We are a Dutch/American family. Many years ago my husband and I lived in Norfolk, Virginia, where we studied and worked for several years. We moved to Boston where our daughter was born. Our two sons were born in Amsterdam and we live there still. As a matter of fact we live in Amsterdam right at the water as well. With our boat we visit the canals all the time.

As our daughter went to Brown's, we traveled the United States again and rediscovered it once more. We totally fell for Maine, and were lucky enough to have found this perfect spot.

My husband works as an architect and I am a landscape architect and work for the city of Amsterdam. We hope to visit Maine as often as we can, as it is a lovely place to be, and in the meantime it's available for rent.

Caroline Elbers purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Caroline Elbers chose Westport

We think this house is just perfect. It's right at the water and has lots of charm. The area around it with the terrain a litle sloped is great for exploring. You can sit on the grass in the sun, pick blackberries in August, walk the beachline, fish at the pier or just sit with a book.

We love the area, the 'outdoor' feeling, the closeness to small towns, to beautiful parks with beaches and lots more!

What makes this cottage unique

It's a wonderful place to be away from it all. The rooms are comfortable and cozy with great views at the water or the outside.

The character of the house and its unique location make us feel at home immediately every time we're here.

Rustic comfort with great location and views

  • 5 of 5

Second visit to the Boathouse and we enjoyed ourselves very much. Lots to do within a short drive. Highlights were: the narrow gauge railway (Alna), lobsters from Tyler, Mushrooms from the woods, Oysters from "the lobster store" (ex Glidden Point), trips to Damariscotta (and don't miss Damariscotta Mills), Boothbay (& Ocean point) and Wiscasset, Coastal Maine Botanical gardens and the many great Farmers markets to visit. Even took in a movie at Frontier in Brunswick where there are lots of great places to shop as well. The house was comfortable, well equipped and the only thing was it was too warm to justify lighting the stove or a fire outside. We will be back.

Gorgeous, Private, Idyllic Spot!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just finished a three-night stay at the Elbers' boathouse, and had a delightful time! We hope to return there next summer, perhaps for an entire week. The wharf and boathouse location are beyond idyllic, and afford gorgeous views of the rocky, pine-tree-rich Maine coast from outdoors, indoors, and even from the master bedroom! The owners have kept the boathouse rustic with a minimalist esthetic, which we loved, and which also made us feel right at home with our two golden retrievers.

There were a few things that would be helpful to know for first-time guests:

1. Be sure to bring groceries or get them on the way as there is a 20-minute+ drive to any stores or restaurants (apart from the Squire Tarbox Inn, which we did not go to). This is good news when it comes to seclusion and privacy!

2. We rented kayaks and enjoyed paddling the waters. Launching the kayaks was a little tricky: We had to gingerly and carefully step down over rocks, covered with slippery seaweed at low tide, and carry the kayaks to the water. The small beach area (shown in some pics in front of the boathouse), is present at low tide, but even then it is not easily accessible.

3. We had some trouble getting the wood stove to work and produce heat (one of our days there was pouring rain and chilly). While I'm a Maine girl and consummate fire starter, I could not get the fire to sustain. When we found a brochure/manual for the stove in one of the kitchen drawers, it didn't offer much information - especially about a knob on the back of the stove that seemed to turn on -- or off - a fan. We instead snuggled in blankets and kept warm that way. A simple stove primer would be helpful to have on hand.

Again, these small challenges did not detract from our enjoyable stay at this lovely boathouse, and we hope to return! Caroline Elbers was very helpful and available via email (albeit with a 6-hour time difference), and Scott, the local caretaker, was readily available by phone and very helpful. Oh, and the caught-that-day lobsters from Tyler were delicious! ☺

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your kind review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. However, I'm sorry to hear about your trouble getting the fire going. For future reference, do contact me during your stay for questions I could have helped out with directions. The wood stove really does work well, most people had no problems with it at all. It may have been the wind? Or the wood was wet? Also, we do have electrical heat throughout the house which warmes the house very quickly and works easily. There is a note in the house about it next to the information I send out to renters. As for launching: some people share your experience, others had no complaints at all. The house is very special because it's right at the rocks and water. Because of it rocks will get slippery...and caution must be taken at all times. Hope to welcome you another time! Caroline Elbers

Peaceful family time

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay at The Boathouse. The view is amazing and the Boathouse has everything we need. The owners even added wireless this year. Not having a tv is a good feature. Caught up on reading

Property manager was prompt in dealing with a water issue that occurred during our last few days

Hope to return next summer

An unforgettable Maine experience!

  • 5 of 5

This lovely cottage has a rustic feel, but with all the amenities you need for a relaxing vacation. Our family of six enjoyed the tidal changes, the amazing sunrises, the hammock, the canoe, cocktails on the dock and all the touches that the Elbers put in to create such a special place. They furnished us with so much valuable information about what to do in the area we could have been busy for weeks, but we found it hard to leave the cottage!

Boathouse

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Character of the Boathouse and all of it's charm. Loved the morning walks, beautiful and quiet. A Bald Eagle graced us one morning by sitting at the end of the dock and didn't mind us taking photos of him. Evenings sitting by the firepit and watching the seals in the river. The only thing that would have made our stay more pleasant would be a floating dock. We found it a little difficult to get our Paddle Board and the canoe to the water. Overall a fantastic stay and would love to visit late fall!!

Beautiful comfortable home in protected cove. Perfect Maine experience

  • 5 of 5

Everything was better than we expected. The house was well outfitted, clean, open, comfortable and easy to live in. From the beds/bedding to the kitchen appliances it couldn't have been nicer. The quiet cove provided great access to the water and a nice fire pit on the waters edge.
