Corporate groups, hunters, fishers, family reunions, groups of friends, visiting "the kids" at Luther and an upcoming wedding are all examples of groups that trust The Lodge to provide fantastic, comfortable accommodations for their special events. In fact, as owners, we love this place so much that it is tough to pack up to leave when we know that our guests are enroute to our log getaway. We've planned, furnished and decorated this home to tickle your fancy and to provide a little education for your gang.... and we've learned a lot during that process.

Outdoor space, including the grill/picnic table, firepit/benches, cement patio/table and chairs, and deck with three rockers and two sets of tables and chairs encourage you to break out into nature. Our grass is still a work in progress, but "to everything there is a season", and it will be lush before long so you can enjoy our assortment of lawn games.

You will find one bedroom with a queen bed and its closet on the main level, close to the bathroom with shower, tub, sink and toilet. Easy access.

Upstairs, on the loft level, are three more bedrooms, two including a queen bed and one equipped with four twin beds (aka the bunkroom!). There is a bathroom on every floor for your convenience. The loft bathroom is generously sized and has a shower with glass door.

Our kitchen is convenient to the back door, making toting in your food supplies quite easy. There is cabinet space open for your groceries, as well as a side by side refrigerator that will hold many bags of goodies. Plenty of cooking tools, pans, and serveware make it easy to rustle up some tasty treats.

The great room has a stunning rock gas fireplace with a thick walnut slab mantle, complete with natural bark edge! Aren't you curious about the large "friend" who is perched on the high mantle? A turkey fan, several fish and a deer add that trophy room touch to this gathering area. Oh, the stories that these walls will hear when friends and family gather. No TV distraction; just great conversation.

If you need to finish the great book that you've toted along, snuggle in your bedroom, on the large sectional in the walkout level, or choose a loft level chair to enjoy that literature with a cup of tea. There is a TV on the loft level, in the walkout level (with DVD player), and a small version in the kitchen for folks who need their fix of HGTV, news or sports!

The lower level is a space where there can be competition and munchies together. The bar space includes a sink, hidden refrigerator and small microwave as well as glassware for your favorite beverages. (The beer mugs are cooling in the refrigerator for you right now.) Billiards, shuffleboard and a variety of table games await your gang. Rules are posted, so you can learn as you go.

The outdoor spaces that are completed include the main level deck with a spectacular view of Bear Creek. Great for photo moments, breakfast or gathering with appetizers and cocktails before dinner. There is also a patio table on the cement patio off of the walkout level. Outside of the main entry you'll find the charcoal grill and a picnic table. Off in the edge of the driveway is your S'mores headquarters; the fire pit and custom made benches.

Grass will be in place as Mom Nature dictates. Those little seeds will be joined by timely additional plantings throughout the summer. We are anxious to get a nice crop of grass for the kids and grandkids to romp on.

About Owner/Manager

What a treat it has been to work with Matt Dieschbourg and Mitch Stortz and their trades associates to put together a truly unique vacation getaway. They were somehow able to get into our brains and come up with construction ideas that exceeded our expectations. Since this property is independently owned by our family (Bruce and Lynn, our two kids and their spouses and three grandkids) and we don't live in the Highlandville community, we are pleased that the management duties including inquiries, rentals and maintenance are handled by the Bear Creek Cabins, also owners of the Highland General Store in Highlandville, Iowa. We are, and you will be, in capable hands from your first question until you return your keys! A top-shelf experience is guaranteed; their hospitality history shines with professionalism and caring.

We would be honored to have you share this lovely area of Iowa. "The Driftless Area", where the land was spared from the glaciers scraping the dirt down to a flat surface, is a unique retreat and a peaceful experience. We enjoy our walks, campfires, dinners as a family, fishing, photography, bird watching, berry picking, finding deer bones, listening to the birds, seeing eagles soar and getting to know all of the fascinating history and activities in the area. Come check it all out for yourself!

Owner/Manager purchased this cabin in 2015

Why Owner/Manager chose Decorah

Well........we had a starter "THE LODGE" for four years and love this area. Purchased that one due to a timely visit to friends who were then building their own private cabin with the Bear Creek group. A single family home in the area had just come on the market due to unusual circumstances. It was a complete surprise to us that we purchased it after spending about 20 minutes walking through that wonderful home. It has recently been sold to a lovely couple who are loving it as their primary residence rather than a rental property.

For the current "THE LODGE", things fell into place with wooded acreage availability, competent builders, great friends, a forgiving timeline, plenty of help and lots of luck.

We loved our first "THE LODGE", but this one has our stamp, our vision, and input from our family and we are oh-so-happy to be moved in and to have it up and running for our guests.

We hope that you feel the tranquility, the peace and the spirituality of this place where eagles soar. Oh, yes, and what we jokingly call "foo-paw"........wait, make that "Fung Shui" set your mind at rest and get those good vibrations going.

Be SURE to jot a note in our guest book near the front door to document your stay in this space, and to share your unique experiences at "THE LODGE".

What makes this cabin unique

Hard to believe, but true.......there are NO mosquitos! Because the creek water is always flowing, even through winter, there are limited spots for mosquito larvae to hatch. Wildlife watching is superb. Keep your camera handy. No cell phone coverage means that you can legitimately detach from the outside world because you are beyond signals! The porch swings, rocking chairs, and patio tables are meant for you to be out with nature while you enjoy that fresh morning cup of joe or a cool beverage or two later in the day.

We think that The Lodge will give your group a lot of space to spread out for a variety of activities if you choose. The lower level game room features a shuffleboard table, pool table, a variety of board games, small bar with sink, refrigerator and microwave, a large sectional sofa, a high top gathering table that seats four, and a great big screen TV. For folks who enjoy reading, there are several escape areas in the loft level. Or take your book out on the deck, the patio, or go creekside. Bringing a gourmet cook?? Our kitchen will be a great discovery for the most creative foodie. Grilling, you say?? Yes, right outside the back door with a picnic table waiting for the gang. Fire pit? Yep, stock up on S'mores ingredients. Plenty of parking. Highland General Store right down the road for anything that you have forgotten.

Discover the handsome mounts that will welcome your group into the Great Room for a fireside chat! They won't spill your secrets to anyone. Guaranteed.

Come and get some.

Norwegian heritage is very important to Decorah area residents. The influence of those early settlers is quite prominent in architecture, businesses and the common "barn quilts" through the countryside. The downtown Decorah Chamber of Commerce has display racks full of pamphlets that educate you in all the area has to offer. Internet sites offer the same. There are festivals, restaurants, museums and prolific artists to keep you ever so busy!
