About Mel

As busy professionals with children in our lives, we sought out a home in the country as a get away. This home has been that and more for our family and yours. We love to share the beauty and opportunities Hawaii has to offer for refreshment and renewal with all of our fellow travelers around the globe. As avid surfers, hikers, bikers, and general watermen/women our family finds its greatest joys in the elements of Hawaii. We love to hike Waimea Falls and enjoy the botanical variety there. We love to ride our bikes on the bike path as a family as the sun is sinking on another beautiful day here in paradise. And most of all we enjoy walking across the street and strolling the coastline in the mornings or evenings and taking a dip in the saltwater in between.

Mel purchased this house in 2013

Why Mel chose North Shore Oahu

Sugarcane Hale is off the beaten path but so very close to everything attractive about the North Shore. Due to the fact that we are away from town, you will not encounter any of the traffic that others will spend hours in up here but can quickly access everything at your will. We are very proximate to the newly renovated and updated Haleiwa Town which sports some wonderful dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities. The home sits across the street from a very quiet, private crescent beach perfect for sunrise and sunset strolls. Did I mention the historical town of Waialua with all of its plantation era charm? Visit the Waialua Sugar Mill, Jerry's Pizza, The Waialua Band Stand Sunday Concerts, and the local Farmers Market (all walking distance). Come experience the relaxed and charming existence in the country.

What makes this house unique

A/C and whole house fans, recently renovated, fully stocked kitchen and bath, beautifully furnished and decorated with island art, tuned PIANO, amazing views of Mount Kaala, beautifully landscaped yard, lifted home with dining and relax area below, surf and beach equipment available. The home is located right next to the beach without paying for beach front.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We truly enjoyed this quaint little home and its majestic views and proximity to the beach across the street which was a quiet respite. We enjoyed long walks along the crescent beach during sunset each evening and enjoyed the proximity to Haleiwa town (2 minutes up the road). We went to Matsumotos and enjoyed shave ice and enjoyed eating fresh fish at Haleiwa Joes. Surf and Sea was a great place to rent paddle boards and we paddled up the river and into the bay. We also enjoyed a trip out to sea where we swam (in a cage) with sharks! Around the corner was a skydiving airport and we enjoyed watching the divers from the porch of the house. We also loved the proximity to the Sunday polo field. What an eventful place to stay. We were there for 7 days still had things left to do on the north shore. Waimea, Polynesian Cultural Center, zip lining...you name it and it was less than 10 minutes away.

Great location, live like a local at the beach in this home.

  • 5 of 5

We had a most wonderful stay in this great Wailua area beach home. It was the perfect place and getaway for my family of 5. We love the North Shore area and have always wanted to spend more time there. The location is perfect in a quiet "local" area, and we loved not being in a tourist zone. The beach across the street is quiet, has calm water, and mainly only locals were around. We saw large sea turtles sunning on the sand and often felt like we had a private beach all to ourselves. It was quite peaceful and even on the weekend there were very few people there. We enjoyed having beach chairs, toys, towels and coolers at the house to use for our easy daily beach days. The town, Hale'iwa is only a quick 5 minute drive and has great restaurants, food trucks, charming local shops and convenient grocery stores that made going to town very easy with plenty to do and see. We enjoyed surf lessons by Uncle Bryan Surf Suratt also located just past the town and there are many great surfing beaches just minutes beyond there where you can watch the local expert surfers catch huge waves. There was so much to do so close by and yet this home is in such a quiet, relaxed place--it was truly the best of both worlds for us. The house was very clean, very comfortable and decorated well. Great artwork, cute bedding, and overall a current and updated design style. The kitchen is new and has everything you need for easy meals at home, the beds are very comfortable with nice bedding, the master bedroom has a large TV and its own air conditioning unit which helped to quickly cool down the house, then we slept with the windows open for fresh air and the cool, breezy nights were pleasant. There is a bike path right in front of the house that is great for morning walks/runs, we did use 2 of the bikes provided one day and had a lot of fun exploring other parts of our neighborhood. Kellie, the property manager was great and very flexible and easy to work with on our arrival and showed us around the home so we could quickly feel welcome and settle in. It was the perfect thing we were looking for and a way to feel like we were living local beach, I would highly recommend this property as it was exactly the experience we were looking for and hope to come back and stay again next year. We have come to Oahu for the past 5 years and this stay made it one of our favorite trips so far!

Just What We Were Looking For On The North Shore

  • 5 of 5

Family of 4 wanting to surf and relax on the north shore. This property was just what we were looking for. Newly updated 3 bedroom home. The beds were extremely comfortable. Teenage girls were happy with WIFI. Washer and dryer, BBQ, chairs for the beach, bikes for my girls to get around, boogie boards, lots of towels for both bath and beach, bike path right out front and beach literally across the street. We are also avid tennis players and the courts were 1km away. The town of Haleiwa was also a short drive or bike.. Lots to do and see.

Property manager was amazing. Very accommodating. My daughter left her bathing suits in a drawer in her bedroom. She mailed them for us back to Canada.

Thank you for an awesome time.

Beautiful home - perfect for beach relax

  • 5 of 5

Family of 5 - after a busy 2 weeks on the mainland, stayed 5 nights on way home to Australia - wanting time to just relax.

Beautiful home, comfortable beds, well appointed kitchen, plenty of bath & beach towels supplied. Kelly - who met us on our arrival - very welcoming.

Very short walk to a beach. 20min dawdle to old sugar cane mill - groceries, thai, farm markets on saturday. Short drive to Hale'iwa - lots of restaurants, food trucks, supermarket and general shopping (clothes, souvenirs, art galleries). On bus route.

Cons: only one set of keys supplied - meant our family of five with adult children had to pretty much stick together. padlock on gate tricky to master

Would recommend to family and friends

Neat tidy and clean. Impressed!

  • 4 of 5

The house has a lovely new kitchen with huge cook top and fridge with filtered water and ice, and nice new bathroom. We had a large family (5 adults, one teen, two toddlers) and we were quite comfortable here. Could score one more star if there was a second toilet, but we made do.

Beach across the road had so many turtles on our first day! Was magical. There are rocks and urchins under the water at this beach so bring your reef shoes.

The beach toys/chairs and the bikes were cool, we enjoyed using them.

Haleiwa is only 5 minutes away and is a great little town with quite a bit to do, if you are going for dinner, go early as shops close at about 8.

Thanks so much for a great stay! We had an amazing family holiday here, and as I took one last look at the empty house before leaving I got a tear in my eye - I'll always remember Waialua!

Clean comfortable and nice access to attractions.

  • 5 of 5

This rental property has a lovely and newly remodeled interior. It is located in a pleasant and quaint historical area where the original sugar cane plantations were worked and true fishermen settled and still have homes on the beach that can be accessed just across the street from the property. I say: "Come enjoy the history of the area and catch a breath of freshness to be in the truly rural area and be able to enjoy the local lifestyles of the citizens." The country-type environment is peaceful. The home is located away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Waikiki and is in close proximity to the popular historical town of Haleiwa which is listed as a main attraction to visit. The home is clean, and is newly remodeled. The accommodations of the home include comfortable beds, a lovely modern kitchen with a large countertop, new appliances and a nice living room area. The original art displayed in the home is a treat. The newly remodeled bathroom is clean and nicely designed. There is a wrap around porch to enjoy. It is refreshing to have The cool breeze of the trade winds that blow right into the kitchen window and the view of Mount Kaala from there and on the wrap around porch. A very lovely yard with bananas growing and palms and the covered barbecue/picnic area is enjoyable. There is a walking/bike path directly in front of the house that is enjoyable for an evening walk or stroll. The attractions of historic Haleiwa town nearby are many, including a large beach and park along the ocean which is great for family or friends to spend the entire day. A clean safe beach where all kinds of ocean activity is enjoyed. The town offers such fun shopping, popular Shaved Ice treats, surfing shops, fine art shops, great restaurants and a ship bay. The popular Triple Crown Surf Competition is held here and it truly is nice to be able to attend it without the hassle of traffic. The rental home is nice because it is nearby and easily accessible to that contest. Also easily accessible within 20 minutes, you can get to the North Shore by traveling on Pupekea highway to the North towards Pupekea, Waimea Valley and Beach and Turtle Bay, as well as famous Sunset beach and the big Pipeline Surf Contest and the Pineapple factory and much more make this rental location a great place to rent. Very Few locations are available during surf season on North Shore and high tourist times so I recommend this property as a great place to experience the best
