About Reuel & Sara Detweiler

We built the AFrame in 1969 and have been renting to vacationers ever since that time. We now have the second generation bringing their families. Each year we do an upgrade and our guests love to come back to see what might be the newest project. Our 3 boys helped us clean and mow yards as they were growing up, and now have families of their own. Reuel's profession was building and finishing log homes, so he puts his skills to use at the AFrame. Sara worked at the Nursing Home for 20 years after being a stay at home Mom.

Reuel grew up on the family farm where the cottage is located, and met Sara in Pennsylvania. We live in a log home on the 30 acres so are close by when you need us.

Reuel & Sara Detweiler purchased this chalet in 1969

Why Reuel & Sara Detweiler chose Fairview

This is a beautiful place to enjoy all four seasons. In the spring, maple syrup is made from trees on the property, wild flowers, and mushrooms abound in the area. Spring is a good time to view deer, turkey, and migrating birds. Summer is family time for hiking, fishing, swimming, or basking in the Michigan sun. There is time for day trips to Mackinaw Island, or Light Houses along the shore. In the fall, the autumn colors are some of the best in the state. Winter snow and frozen lakes bring joy to skiers, snowmobilers, and ice fisherman. This is also time to enjoy a good book by the crackling fireplace.

What makes this chalet unique

The A-Frame cottage is unique with its open stairway leading to the third bedroom in the open loft with upper deck off the bedroom. The WiFi was just added last year and allows you to bring your work with you if you choose. The dishwasher and wood burning fireplace are also new to the AFrame this year. The best thing that many enjoy, is the privacy and away- from- it- all feeling that you have when you stay here.

Beautiful, Quiet Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were looking for a place to relax and this place was perfect!

When we arrived, Danny (the caretaker) was outside and we were able to talk with him. He was very thoughtful and concerned about the previous renters and how they left the A-frame smelling like beer. But the chalet was very clean and the open windows cleared the beer smell right up. (I joked with my husband that we arrived a day late and missed the party!)

The A-frame was beautiful and well-maintained. It is on a small lake so I was able to feed the fish. We saw two deer the first morning, also chipmunks, squirrels and geese.

Our dogs loved it too. Our Maggie loved watching the fish and sniffing around outside. Our old boy, Rex, just enjoyed relaxing on the deck.

This place was the perfect getaway and everything that we were looking for!

We truly enjoyed our stay and are hoping to make a return trip soon!

Short stay

  • 4 of 5

We were by accident put into the wrong chalet the first day, meaning that we could never sleep late as we had to be ready at 8 in the morning to relocate to the original booked one. The second one was much better. No dust and spider webs. This was and is a great setting. Beautiful wooden interior. Nicely cleaned and organized. Again there were not dust in the second one, especially if you have a dust allergy. The view is magnificent. Great fireplace. There was a boat available, but unfortunately the lake was frozen and I measured it, it was frozen to almost 1 foot. Great for fishing. Great understanding owners and landlord. No worries and quarrels. Around there is some of the best organic shops and bakery ever. You are so close to everything, but still so secluded from all. We will recommend this to anyone, because it is just a great location. Great for pets and children as well. My children's feedback is beautiful, great location, good bedding (my daughter), great for fishing or ice fishing. Recommendation, always enquire whether the lake is frozen or not before going. Great owners. Would love to come again for more than one week soon. Thank you very much it was delightful.

Far exceeded expectations

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is so charming and cozy and cute inside and out. The property is very private and well kept. Plenty of room for our dogs to roam. Ice fishing was great. The cabin was updated and clean. Communication with the owners was so easy and hassle free. Everything was perfect for our little get away. Already checking the calendars to pick a weekend to return.

First of all the owner was wonderful, quick to respond and very accommodating. The location is very secluded and peaceful yet within minutes you can be in town or on the au sable. You can bring your dogs which is huge for us pet parents, and we SO appreciate that amenity, and take it seriously to be responsible for clean up etc. We enjoyed our time there. So the rest of this review is not to discourage anyone!! Cabin was very cozy and cute but in great need of a good scrubbing along with some new pots and pans. Also the blankets need replacing and/or washing. The shower is very small and not user friendly however that can't be changed. We certainly made do and again enjoyed ourselves. I'd suggest bringing own bedding to include blankets and pillows, and perhaps a pan or two but other than that it's a GREAT place for peace, quiet, serenity, and rest!
