About James & Zandy Ball - Mounthaven Resort

In 2003, our dad convinced us to join forces and buy a family getaway just an hour or two away from where the members of our family live. For years our home away from home has hosted family getaways, holiday dinners, couples escapes from the city, visiting songwriters, sewing groups, sisters who needed an escape from their kids, friends who stayed up all night talking and playing board games, and multiple generations of our family enjoying unplugged time in the forest. We transformed a our cabin in the woods into a comfy chalet with the leadership of our dad.

Although he is no longer with us, Running Deer Chalet is named in his honor. Running Deer was the name he chose for himself in the father/daughter YMCA Indian Princess program he enrolled in with us as kids. The point of that program was to make special memories together, and that spirit lives on at Running Deer Chalet.

Although our family has grown too large to enjoy Running Deer Chalet at the same time, we're delighted to share it with three generations and offer you and your family the chance to make your own memories here.

Running Deer Chalet is managed locally by James and Zandy Ball, owners of the Mounthaven Resort just down the road. You'll check in with them and they'll ensure you have a great stay.

Thanksgiving getaway.

  • 4 of 5

Overall nice stay. Had a few hiccups in the beginning but Don the manager was on top of it. Things to improve would be more towels, only 4 included with 6 people staying, low on dish soap & other cleaning supplies. We would stay again.

Close to the park, deer in the neighborhood, hot tub!

  • 4 of 5

Nice, roomy cabin very close to the Nisqually Mt. Rainier park entrance. Everything you need for a family of four or more. Nice, hot jacuzzi, ready to jump in after a long day's hike. Full kitchen with everything you need to prepare meals. Washer/dryer, tons of movies upstairs in the loft with board games. I would give it 5 stars but the master bed was a little springy.

Perfect Family Get Away

  • 5 of 5

Our family decided we needed some fun and relaxing quality time together. We chose the Running Deer Chalet. What a perfect choice. The Chalet is so well appointed and more than enough room for five adults. We are a family that loves to cook together and appreciated the well supplied kitchen so we could prepare all our meals. We enjoyed great walks, a wonderful drive to Paradise, and game time near the fire. On our last morning, we woke to a winter wonderland. It was so beautiful! No matter the time of year, this is a great place to spend time with loved ones.

Charming older cabin in the woods.

  • 4 of 5

Plenty of room for our family of four. The one bathroom is quite small but worked for us. Loved the addition of a hot tub and laundry!

It was so nice to be able to bring our dog too.

Easy location to visit the mountain and rivers!

Beautiful location.

Thank you for sharing your house with us!

Wonderful, roomy home very close to Mt. Rainier.

  • 5 of 5

The separate bedrooms upstairs and down provided plenty of space and privacy, and we also utilized the hide-a-bed downstairs. The kitchen was fully stocked which enabled us to cook our own meals and save money on our vacation. We loved the convenient location to Mt. Rainier. After we checked out, it also wasn't a long drive to Mt. St. Helens. The neighborhood is quiet and we saw a few deer wandering around.

Great Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

Worked on the cabin a few weekends in winter / early spring. Very comfortable, quiet place to stay. Has a cabin look on the inside with great loft. The wildlife of deer and birds coming by were great entertainment.
