Huge Beautiful 2-Story Apartment in a Great Neighborhood.

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,000 sq ft
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

2-Story private apartment with lots of character and room to stretch out.

(Attention extra large groups: This B&B sleeps 8, but if you have a larger group, there's a second B&B in the building that sleeps an additional 6 people, which can be booked separately. That listing number is 1188594.)

This very large two story apartment is truly unique. It occupies two floors, with three bedrooms and one bathroom on the second floor and a kitchen, dining room, bathroom and great room on the first floor. The great room is two stories high with an exposed wraparound staircase. The building still retains it's original hardwood maple floors, with the exception of one of the bedrooms, which is carpeted. Both floors have private 4-season porches on the front of the building. The back door leads out onto a beautiful and rather large split level cedar deck. Some off-street parking is available at the rear of the building as well.

There is one master bedroom with a king size bed, cable TV and it's own private 4-season porch. The other two bedrooms are substantially smaller and feature queen size beds.

Both bathrooms have recently been redone and feature some beautiful custom stonework and cabinetry. The kitchen received granite countertops around the same time, and features a full size refrigerator/freezer, gas range, microwave, coffee machine and toaster. It is also equipped with cookware, dishes and utensils. The apartment has it's own laundry machines, which are located off the kitchen. The dining room is immediately adjacent to the kitchen and has a private 4-season porch attached.

The great room is part of what makes this rental so unique. It has a 20 foot ceiling with an open staircase that wraps up to the second floor. It's the living room of the apartment and features comfortable seating with a large flat screen television. It also has a hide-a-bed.

The apartment is equipped with free wireless high speed internet access, cable television and a dedicated heating and air conditioning system with it's own thermostat that the renter has control over.

This rental occupies both floors of the South half of the building, and was originally two apartments, which have been converted into one extra large single unit. Guests have three private doors to the apartment: First and second floor front doors, which lead into a common stairwell shared with the other unit in the building, and a back door, which leads onto the cedar deck.

About Mike Olson

I grew up in Northeast Minneapolis and moved to South Minneapolis when I attended the University of Minnesota. I've lived in this area ever since. It suites me. I'm what you might call an artistic type. I actually made the door in this photo. I'm a Classically trained composer and have strong ties to the arts community here. I've made a living as a composer and audio producer for over 30 years. I'm also rather "outdoorsy". I am intimately familiar with the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota and have biked hundreds of miles of trails in the state. I love exploring and am always looking for new bike trails and restaurants. I also love to cook.

Mike Olson purchased this apartment in 1993

Why Mike Olson chose Whittier

I chose to live in this part of town because it just feels right to me. It's old. It has character. The boulevard trees are large and mature. Great restaurants. Beautiful old parks. The lakes. The bike trails. A vibrant arts scene. Many small independent businesses. Close to everything. The building is original to the site and is over 100 years old. I like that it's large. It was originally constructed as a 5-plex and has been many things over the past century, including a rooming house and an elder care facility. It was converted to a duplex right before I purchased it, at which time it received all new wiring, plumbing and heating/air conditioning. This neighborhood has many old large houses and mansions. Most of them had been all broken up into multiple units, but as the area gentrified, these stately old homes have gradually been bought-up and converted back to single occupancy residences. I was fortunate to have gotten in near the beginning of the gentrification upswing.

What makes this apartment unique

People throw around the word "unique" pretty loosely, but this property truly does earn that description. Just ask any appraiser I've had look at the property. They can never find comparables to include in their appraisals. That uniqueness is part of what attracted me to the property. Though it is conventional in many respects, it's size and layout do make it stand out – particularly the large two-story great rooms in both units. If I had to choose one attribute of this building that really made me want to acquire it, other than the neighborhood itself, it would be the great rooms. They are not original to the house. They were created by removing the second floor and some of the interior walls in the back part of the building. It's a rather striking effect.

Enormous apartment in beautiful neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

Mike's place blew my mind. I had seen the pictures and had some idea about it, but when we arrived we couldn't believe how big it was. Two floors and it just seemed to go on forever. We almost had too much space. We spent the most time in the TV room because the couch could hold like 10 people (though there were just 5 of us). The kitchen was large and the dining room was this beautiful blue color. But of all the rooms my favorite was the front room (one on each floor). I opened the blinds, opened the window for some fresh air, and just sat there with a book. Such a nice feeling to look at the fall leaves and have some down time. I can't say enough good things about the apartment.

On top of it all, Mike was extremely gracious in allowing us to arrive late and being a very helpful guide. His requirements for clean-up were very reasonable. If we ever get the chance to go back to Minneapolis (and I really hope we do, it's such a lovely city), we will definitely stay at Mike's place again.

My family of 5 loved this apartment. It was in a great location with tons of restaurants and activities within walking distance. Everyone had their space and the rental was very clean. Loved the porch spaces. Mike was a great resource while there and was very kind to us. Highly recommend.

large and clean, good neighborhood

  • 4 of 5

This is a pleasant large space in a good walkable neighborhood. House is clean and well-equipped with all the basics. Quiet street. Easy access to downtown, lakes, and right next to Eat Street. Was hard to find choices in Minneapolis that sleep this many people and this was very good for seven people having a long weekend.

Spacious, nice place in good area

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of 6 guys for a football game, and Mike's place was all we could have asked for. We had plenty of space to spread out and plenty of spots to sleep comfortably. It's in a great neighborhood with plenty of places to eat just blocks away. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again.

Car: not necessary

I have enjoyed living in this location for over 20 years. I'm a life long resident of Minneapolis and look forward to being your host and local guide during your stay here. I have deep connections to the neighborhood and an even deeper knowledge of everything this vibrant area has to offer. Whatever you need, I'm your go-to resource.

Restaurants: Now this could be a truly long list. Minneapolis has in recent years become a destination for culinary explorers. Food & Wine Magazine has just named Minneapolis as "our favorite new food city", and we've received rave reviews for our high quality, creative and diverse food scene from Anthony Bourdain and Time Magazine to name just a couple. The property is situated just two blocks from a section of Nicollet Ave. which has been designated as "Eat Street", where you can find a wide variety of ethnic restaurants, including Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican, German and Malaysian, not to mention Glam Doll Donuts. Other nearby notable restaurants include Ice House, Heyday, Piccolo, La Belle Vie, Butcher and the Boar and the Bachelor Farmer to name but a few. (Like I say, this could be a very long list.) I'm a bit of a food explorer myself and I can make specific recommendations.

The Lakes: We are close to the South Minneapolis chain of lakes, which include Cedar Lake, Lake of the Isles, Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet. Sailboats, canoes, kayaks and paddle boards are available for rental at both Calhoun and Harriet, and there are multiple swimming beaches at Cedar, Calhoun and Harriet. Other boating opportunities are too numerous to mention. This is Minnesota after all. Again, let me be your guide.

Bicycling: Minneapolis is an exceptionally bike-friendly city with many miles of connected bike trails. The Greenway bike trail is located about 3 blocks South of the property and it connects to a huge system of trails. There is a Nice Ride bike rental station just 2 blocks away, and there are also a number of bike renal shops nearby where you can rent other bikes. Being an avid cyclist myself and someone who loves to explore, I can suggest any number of excellent bike rides. Just ask me.

Walking: I've already mentioned the incredible network of bike trails we have here, but there are also many great walks and hikes available in the area – and I know them all. From paved trails around local lakes to more rustic trails in the lush forests of the local river valleys, there are more beautiful trails than you'll ever be able to cover in one visit. I do a lot of walking on these trails and am intimately familiar with them.

Museums: We're just blocks away from two major art museums – The Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and there are also many other small art galleries and shops in the area.

Theater: Minneapolis is a well known hotbed of theatrical innovation. The world famous Guthrie Theater is located downtown and many other smaller theaters are scatter throughout the area, including the Jungle Theater, which is just a few blocks away.

Movie Theaters: In addition to the usual mainstream movie theaters you'd expect to find in any city, we also have a large number of art house theaters, including two that are only blocks away in Uptown.

Music: Live music is also big here with numerous local venues highlighting our rich local music scene as well as national touring acts. I have close connections with the local music community and can provide you with recommendations.

Winter Sports: Hey, it's Minnesota. We've got it all when it comes to fun outdoor Winter experiences. Cross country skiing is popular on the South Minneapolis chain of lakes, and as you move out of the downtown area, options for snowboarding, downhill skiing and snowmobiling abound.

(I could go on, but you get the idea. This is a vibrant thriving community with a lot to do and see.)
