Nice Place!
This is a comfortable rural setting with easy access to Mars Hill, Asheville, the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is room to roam onsite, and it is very dog-friendly. The hosts are available, but unobtrusive. We enjoyed our month at the cabin.

God’s Country
We absolutely loved our stay at this adorable cabin tucked away on the most beautiful property. We are a party of 5 and brought our 9 month old golden doodle as well. We had plenty of room in the cabin and it was paradise for our pup there. It was the perfect getaway from the noisy, hot city life in Florida. This place was magical. That’s the best way I can explain it. Thank you so much for letting us stay there this past week. We enjoyed everything so much and thank you also for the delicious pumpkin bread! Even my picky husband loved it: )

About the host

Hosted by Mike or Sandy Stevenson

Host profile image
Your hosts are both Midwesterners—Sandy from Madison, Wisconsin, and Mike from Chicago, Illinois—who lived and worked in the southeast in the 1970s and determined to retire there. Mike is a retired oil company executive who has always had an interest in woodworking, landscaping, and cooking. This property allows him to indulge all of those. Sandy is a retired High School U.S. History teacher and now works part time at the County Visitor Center where she can tell visitors to the area about its rich heritage. In the years we have been here, we have both become deeply imbedded in the community serving on several boards and volunteering frequently to help the schools and the community. We lived in the cabin while building our house elsewhere on the property and have fond memories of its coziness.

Why they chose this property

After living in the suburbs of Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Dallas, the idea of a smaller town was very appealing. Also, having spent the last 20 years in the flat lands of Dallas, it was time for a change of scenery. We were familiar with the area as a result of having been stationed in Atlanta in the early 70s when we used to vacation in the mountains here. As a couple entering retirement, good medical facilities was a requirement (Asheville has one of the top hospitals in the country) as was accessible entertainment (Asheville has 23 performing arts companies, several music venues, round the clock festivals from May to October, plenty of good stores, and more good restaurants than a reasonable person could try in a year). But a bigger piece of property in the mountains was the goal. At the time we bought this property in 1999, land by the acre was a relative bargain compared to other places in the mountains. Western North Carolina has such natural beauty and all four seasons have moderate temperatures and a splendor unique to each one. There is plenty to do within hours of the location not only in western North Carolina, but in Tennessee, Virginia, and South Carolina. You can drive to Hilton Head in five hours, to Washington DC in eight and you can drive to New York City in a day.

What makes this property unique

After looking all around the Asheville area, this piece of property in the country a few miles outside of Mars Hill was the perfect fit. A creek running through it, a mountain out back and some level area to allow for grandchildren to run and for entertaining large groups of people. Since we are year around residents, good roads that would be drivable in the winter were important as was a truly rural environment. We were both tired of suburban living with neighbors a few feet away. The waterfall and the hiking trails were the icing on the cake!
