About Peg McAllister

We purchased this beautifully located cottage in 2005, near the Wai O'pae Tidepools. We love the serenity, the endless options of things to do, the sound of the ocean, the tropical fragrant flowers, coconuts, papaya and aloe growing on the property. Each day brings a beautiful sunrise over the tidepools, snorkeling among colorful fish and coral, a place to relax and to enjoy family and friends.

Peg McAllister purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Peg McAllister chose Puna District

Our Hawaiian cottage features a unique natural lava heated swimming pool, tropical plants, palms, even a Black crowned Heron comes to fish on occasion. An outdoor lava BBQ, wrap around porch and fully screened in lanai. Privacy on all sides of this property, offering lush vegetation and ocean sounds.

What makes this cottage unique

The view from the wrap around porch offers changing views of the natural lava heated pool as the tide changes twice each day. I fell in love with the property because of the pool, I jumped in during my first visit with the realtor! I was sold that this is where I want to spend my vacations. Many of our guests come back year after year, too!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Notes:
Punana Kiowai offers a great location at the eastern most tip of the Big Island. Located on its own tidal pool and 100 yards from the famous Wai 'Opae tidepools. Nearby Ahalanai Hot pond and Isaac Hale boat launch (Pohiki). Near historic town of Pahoa, Kalapana, great for trips to see lava flow and visit Volcano National Park. A day trip to Kona side of Big Island, this is the best location for outdoor enthusiasts and overall site seeing.

The Best!!

  • 5 of 5

First visit to Hawaii and we were so fortunate to land here! The house is so comfortable and the garden/pond area will make you never want to leave. But you must visit the Volcanoes National Park and snorkel some of the area - just be extremely careful walking on ah-ah lava rocks.I have the wounds to prove the wisdom of that advice.

The house is very well organized and has very comfortable beds. There are ceiling fans in all rooms and we needed them. The kitchen is well equipped and there is a grill. There is also a neat outdoor fireplace, lounge chairs and is quite private. But the treasure is the pond! A little tricky for an "older woman" with rotten knees to get in and out. But it can be done. Do it!!

The owner has provided many guide books and recommendations for enjoying the area, bikes to travel to Champagne Pool and a screened lanai that we never used. We loved the porch too much! Watching the gold dusted geckos was entertaining!

I highly recommend you stay at this great home!

Beautiful, peaceful & tranquil🌴🌊🌺💦

  • 5 of 5

Hi

This has to be one of the Big islands best little secrets. We came here for some family downtime & relaxing. I would have never expected all of the unique unexpected pleasures this beautiful lil house has to offer. The tide pool in the backyard is so relaxing along with the sounds of the frogs at night they lull you to sleep. This house is surrounded by a location of tide pools in the area and ocean where you can see all of the oceans beautiful tropical fish. I feel so fortunate to have found this lil peace of heaven and the owner checks in to see if there's anything you need. Thank you for sharing your beautiful place with my family. We hope to return very soon.

Gorgeous warm swiming pond

  • 5 of 5

We had a very relaxing and wonderful stay. Comfortable beds and sweet little home.

Most of the homes in this great area are older, like this one but this one had no mold, which was a very pleasent surprise. If you are looking for brand new and can't put up with an older kitchen, this may not be the place for you.

However be sure to bring ear plugs or a white noice program on your phone because the Coqui frogs start their 90 decibie cherps at night and make sleeping a challenge for some.

The home is very well equiped but shop before you come because the nearest store or restaurant is 9 miles away in Pahoa. Over all we loved it and will return.

Owner's Response: We are so delighted that you had a great time at our Hawaiian cottage and natural lava pool. Our location is at the renowned Wai Opae Tidepools, about 10 miles from Pahoa, our closest town. It is a fun place to poke around and several good restaurants, too. I love sleeping to the sound of the coqui frogs, it's like night music to my ears. For those light sleepers, we are adding ear plugs in each nightstand.

Pleasant time but loud at night

  • 3 of 5

My wife and. I had a pleasant week at the Pond House. It was well appointed with appliances and lounging seating and had a nice feel to the house. Access to the tide pools was great as well as lava viewing boat excursions from Isaac Hale Park just a few miles down the road. The house and kapoho area was a bit isolated from Pahoa about 9 miles away but it was easy to head into town for dinner and breakfast. One unavoidable issue is the loud coqui frogs. If you're a good sleeper...no problem. If not, get good earplugs. It would really help if the screened openings in each bedroom could be closed at night. We spent a full week at the Pond House but 3-4 nights would have been sufficient to soak up the feel of the area.

Owner's Response: The nighttime sounds of the coqui frogs and the warm breezes in the palm trees is soothing music to most of our guests. We are adding earplugs to each nightstand, for light sleepers. We purposefully created the high in the wall screened vents to allow those breezes to cool the house along with the ceiling fans in every room. Our Hawaiian cottage in Kapoho Vacationland is away from the hustle and bustle of resorts and towns. Pahoa, our closest town, is 10 minutes away and Hilo is 40 minutes. Most of our guests book for 3-4 nights and then write in the guest book they wished they stayed longer. The access to your own private lava heated tidepool and the Wai O'Pae tidepools are the main attractions. In addition, explore Champagne ponds in Beach Lots, the Ahalanui Park, Pohiki, Kalapana, lava flows into the ocean, Uncle Robert's on Wednesday nights, Makua market on Sundays, Volcano National Park, Hilo and Akaka Falls...provide much to do. Or just relaxing/reading in our screened-in lanai on a traditional Hawaiian chaise lounge or an adirondack chair on the wrap around porch provide peace and rest to those seeking a vacation of repose, rest and time with nature and appreciation for God's creation.

A Nice Area But House Needs Work

  • 3 of 5

We booked a 10 day stay during the winter, which is a rainy season in the Pahoa tide pool area, but sunny late mornings and afternoons prevailed making the stay very nice. This house is in a great location with lots of amenities, private tide pool, and great local restaurants. It was nice to land in Hilo and get accustomed to jet lag in your own private tide pool. The house, however, is on the older side with windows that don't close if blowing rain is an issue. A fully stocked kitchen was good but some older items should be replaced. Bedrooms were very well ventilated with excellent airflow. Bedroom lampshades were in need of a deep cleaning as well as headboards. The couch was extremely uncomfortable and moldy pillows need to be replaced. Since the area receives several hundred inches of rainfall a year, mold is an issue in older beach homes and although recently painted, mold does reform and needs daily care. The Pahoa town has some really good restaurants and Cajun Paradise was a pleasant fresh produce and sandwich spot close to the tide pool area. Owner did provide local help if needed, but it is what it is. I would not recommend this property to family or friends.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your observations. I have asked our housekeeper to clean the headboards and lampshades, remove the pillows, (the sofa is new). As you can imagine in a tropical climate, we work constantly to keep everything fresh for our guests. Often guests leave foodstuffs/spices for other guests. Since your review is so much lower than other guests, if you feel a credit is in order, please contact me directly. I want all of our guests to have a 5 Star experience with our traditional Hawaiian cottage and tidal pond. Mahalo, Peg
