About Peg McAllister

We purchased this beautifully located cottage in 2005, near the Wai O'pae Tidepools. We love the serenity, the endless options of things to do, the sound of the ocean, the tropical fragrant flowers, coconuts, papaya and aloe growing on the property. Each day brings a beautiful sunrise over the tidepools, snorkeling among colorful fish and coral, a place to relax and to enjoy family and friends.

Peg McAllister purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Peg McAllister chose Puna District

Our Hawaiian cottage features a unique natural lava heated swimming pool, tropical plants, palms, even a Black crowned Heron comes to fish on occasion. An outdoor lava BBQ, wrap around porch and fully screened in lanai. Privacy on all sides of this property, offering lush vegetation and ocean sounds.

What makes this cottage unique

The view from the wrap around porch offers changing views of the natural lava heated pool as the tide changes twice each day. I fell in love with the property because of the pool, I jumped in during my first visit with the realtor! I was sold that this is where I want to spend my vacations. Many of our guests come back year after year, too!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Punana Kiowai offers a great location at the eastern most tip of the Big Island. Located on its own tidal pool and 100 yards from the famous Wai 'Opae tidepools. Nearby Ahalanai Hot pond and Isaac Hale boat launch (Pohiki). Near historic town of Pahoa, Kalapana, great for trips to see lava flow and visit Volcano National Park. A day trip to Kona side of Big Island, this is the best location for outdoor enthusiasts and overall site seeing.

A Beautifully Maintained and Stocked Property

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at Punana Kiowai over the course of several years, and I am always struck by not only the wonderful location of the property as well as the property itself, but by the care with which Peg stocks and maintains her house. Having stayed in a number of other vacation properties over the years, I must honestly say that not all homeowners think of their renters' comfort and convenience to the extraordinary degree that Peg does, and I hope that other vacationers appreciate Peg's thoughtfulness and attention. Punana Kiowai is my husband's and my favorite vacation house in not just Kapoho Vacationland, but Kapoho Beach Lots, Leilani and everywhere in between, and I think all the house's rave reviews from prior visitors speaks volumes about it. I just wanted to add my additional praise for Peg's care and concern and her property manager Mitzi's attention to the already wonderful comments about the house itself from scores of other people.

Lava pool. WOW!

  • 5 of 5

The house has fairly small bedrooms, large kitchen area, and the attached screened in lanai was fabulous. Everything you need is at the house including a couple of bikes. Close to the tide pools too. But for me the warm lava pool exclusively for our use was incredible. With the little fish swimming around in it, it would be great to learn to snorkel. I just loved swimming in it♥️ Only hiccup was the smoke detector battery was dead so it kept chirping. When I called to have it replaced the property manager said she would send someone in a few hours. No one came. I called to ask again, but didn't receive a reply. Checked out the next morning and not even a "sorry" acknowledgment. I guess I expected that. Didn't spoil our visit and I would definitely return.

Owner's Response: Aloha Guests, Thank you for your review. I am truly sorry that the battery did not get replaced that evening. Please always feel free to contact me, the owner, as I have options to reach folks to resolve any issues. A smoke detector battery is pretty easy to replace, and there are extra batteries in the freezer. Glad you had a great stay and were "wowed" by our lava pool. Yes, please do come again. Mahalo, Peg

We live on Oahu and go to the Big Island 2-3 times per year. We LOVED our stay here - the tidepool in the backyard was a huge hit with our kids, ages 3-13. We will be back!

Indescribably beautiful and well-run property

  • 5 of 5

This is the most amazing house we have ever seen - we didn't want to leave! Peg has thought of everything and the house is well-stocked with any items you might need on vacation. The outdoor shower was amazing, the screened in porch was perfect for playing games and doing puzzles (Peg has a great stock!). The house has bikes and boards and water shoes and pool toys... it's really got everything. Tidepools are half a block away. Also a great place to get a run in (lots of nice roads for scenic running). This is just what you need if you want to get away from it all and relax in quiety beauty. I can't say enough good things about this property and about Peg. She was a breeze to work with and even facilitated a return of a left item. Thank you so much Peg - we hope to come back again!

Fabulous Hawai'i retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We went snorkeling every morning! This home was a very short walk from excellent snorkeling in the tidepools. This is a great place for beginners, as the pools are protected from the surf so the water is very calm, but there are still amazing fish and coral! The outdoor shower made it easy to clean up afterwards - we could rinse off before going into the house. The kids played literally for hours in the salt-water lava-heated pool - there were small fish in there, so the girls practiced their snorkeling as well as just floated around. My husband and I could sit on the back porch in the shade and watch them.

This was a great place to relax. We went to Volcano NP on a couple of days, explored Hilo and surrounding towns, and visited various beaches. While some of these were a bit of a drive by island standards (about an hour to Volcano, and about 15 minutes to the nearest town Pahoa), it was worth it to be in a natural area of such beauty and to be far from the resort areas.

The house was the perfect size for the four of us. There are two bedrooms with queen-sized beds, and a pull-out sofa in the living room (which we didn't use). We ate at the dining table on the back porch, but there's also a larger table on the screened-in lanai. It was great to have a kitchen so we could eat breakfast and dinner at 'home' instead of spending all of our time in restaurants. There were plenty of kitchen necessities - pots, pans, a rice cooker, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, wineglasses, plastic wrap, spices, hot sauce, ketchup, coffee filters, etc. - so it was easy to make ourselves at home after a trip to the grocery store and the farmers' market.

The coqui frogs are loud at night, but there are earplugs provided if you are a light sleeper (I never used them). The house was very clean, but we did see a few ants, and one morning a gecko was darting around on the living room walls - it's Hawai'i!

I would definitely stay here again. We did not want to leave!

A rainforest paradise on a truly dramatic island!!

  • 5 of 5

It is clear to see that this house is loved! We have travelled all over the Hawaiian islands and lived in several rentals and this one stands out, in a very positive way. All cutlery and kitchen equipment works and are in great condition. The house is well organised and very pretty, inside and out. There are beach chairs, mats, snorkels, sewing kit, bikes, printer for boarding cards, you name it! The BBQ is clean and huge, the wrap around lanai is cosy and well proportioned. The tidal pool is amazing and the area is great if you want to get away from it all and relax in nature.

The big island is BIG, compared to the other islands, so wherever you stay you will have to drive far to see it all. However, driving across the island on Saddle road is amazing so we didn't mind one bit.

Mahalo for sharing your home with us. We loved our stay and we will come back to this amazing island!
