Overview

About the property

3 BR, 1 bath on woodsy treed lot on the Lake - Up North feel w/o the long drive

This wee house, which we like to call our Cozy Cottage, is barely 1,000 SF and sits on a large wooded lot with 120 feet of sandy bottom Lake Michigan water frontage. When we began shopping for a vacation house in 2014, we only had two criteria: 1) it had to be on the shores of a lake; and 2) it had to be an easy drive from Milwaukee. We quickly weeded out the lakes with shallow water, mucky bottoms & well…weedy water. We soon narrowed our focus to Lake Geneva and Lake Michigan. As we continued to explore, we came to realize we also yearned for something forested, remote and tranquil, which happily pointed us in the direction of Cedar Grove.

We didn’t really have a particular style of house in mind, but when we saw Cozy Cottage, we knew it was The One. It looked at once like an East Coast cottage perched on the shores of the Atlantic, surrounded by sea grass (Cape Cod, perhaps?) but also like a mountain cabin nestled among towering pines and oaks, with a seasonal stream ringed with ferns. Inside, the house was old, and crooked, and charming.

We learned that Cozy Cottage was built in 1939 and originally served as a humble fishing cabin. Back then, cabins were simple, functional wood frame structures out in remote areas but just steps from Lake Michigan's fertile waters. They were wood paneled, unpretentious, utilitarian shelters built so their owners could have a base from which to hunt, fish, explore the great outdoors and enjoy nature’s bounty. The lands on which these cabins stood were treasured by families and passed down from generation to generation. As time passed, some were sold to new families who valued the land, but the cabins…not so much. As a result, larger & more modern vacation homes have sprung up here and there along Lake Michigan’s shores. Luckily, however, a number of these quaint cabins have survived and lend a timeless quality to the area, a depth of history, a sense of belonging.

The cottage has 3 bedrooms: one on the upper level, one on the first floor and the 3rd (aka “the captain’s quarters”) somewhere in between – a quasi-loft accessed from a short step ladder. The cottage can comfortably sleep 4 adults and 2 children but is also perfect for a couple, small family, a group of friends or a girls’ weekend getaway. There is a galley kitchen, 1 bath, and a living room/dining room combination. The screened in patio off the back of the house is just feet from the water and provides additional living/entertaining space for your stay while keeping the mosquitoes at bay.

We come here to relax, decompress, unplug, and let go of stress.

We come here to take in the sights and sounds of the lake, the woods, and the parks.

We come here to enjoy the outdoors, kayak along the shore, bird watch, read, talk.

We invite you to do the same, and leave rested, rejuvenated, and refreshed.

NOTE: JUNE 2017: The water level of Lake Michigan is at it's highest level ever recorded due in part to all the rain we've received this year. While we had a sandy beach at the cottage the last couple of years, here in 2017 the water is right up to the sea wall. There is a narrow strip of of sea grass & native vegetation where you can place beach chairs but at the current time, you cannot take long walks along the beach, as the beach is largely submerged. That said, you can still enjoy all the other fun things to do in the area!

About Lori Foulke

We live in Fox Point, a few miles north of Milwaukee. Bill is a professor at UWM, Lori is a realtor, and Dexter is a happy-go-lucky dog we adopted from a shelter. Both of us grew up on the East Coast (Massachusetts and Virginia) and we each spent our summer vacations at the beach, swimming and playing in the Atlantic Ocean. Bill's family eventually moved to northern Illinois, where they were frequent guests at a friend's cottage on Lake Geneva. We met in graduate school at the University of Illinois, and went sailing on one of our first dates. We share a deep appreciation of the water.

Why Lori Foulke chose Southern Wisconsin

We like the idea of having a property right on the shores of a lake. The fact that Lake Michigan is vast and appears like an ocean or sea resonates with us and brings back fond memories of our childhood vacations. We love that the color and appearance of the water changes seasonally, and often, daily. Deep and vibrant purples, blues, greens, aquas and tans. We like the white sandy shore, and the beach that comes and goes with the waves. We do not "manicure" our beach but rather leave the grasses, reeds, and flowers in place - for erosion control and because it recalls the grass covered dunes we grew up with.

Great cozy cottage.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five loved staying at the cottage. Our three sons enjoyed the kayaks, s'mores around the fire, catching fire flies, playing board games, and kicking a soccer ball in the open field out front. Owners are available if you need anything. We will return.

Heaven on earth...

  • 5 of 5

I didn't want to leave! The Wee Cozy Cottage has everything you need! Just bring clothes, toiletries, and food. I stayed for a week and it wasn't enough time. Lori was the sweetest; very attentive and accommodating. Please keep in mind, Lake Michigan does not have a thermostat. It is, however, a magnificent body of water. Every day the lake changed. Most mornings, days, and evenings, I would just stare at it. So very peaceful. There is a grocery store (Piggly Wiggly) nearby if you intend to stay in like I did. Bada Bing Pizza in Cedar Grove delivers (they have a very good thin crust pizza). There are also plenty of things to do in nearby towns. I had mapped out the lighthouse in Port Washington, and a trip to Sheboygan; however, once I saw how beautiful and peaceful the cottage was, I decided not to miss one minute of being there. Thank you so much, Lori, for sharing your little piece of heaven with me!

Relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

Great time at Wee Cozy Cottage! We had all the amenities we needed for the long weekend. Vacationing with a young one (3yo) can be challenging, but the Cottage was like a home away from home. We made good use of the kitchen and washer/dryer. My wife and I were able to enjoy the night sky, lots of fireworks nearby and the bonfire pit. It was nice that we were able to walk a few steps from the enclosed porch and enjoy these amenities, especially with the little one asleep upstairs. Loved the peaceful Lake Michigan views! Will definitely return! Thanks Lori!

Exceeded our expectations

  • 5 of 5

What a great cottage. Lori did an amazing job making a "fishing cabin" into a wonderful cozy cottage. The rehab on the cottage from fishing cabin to quality beach house is deluxe. The bathroom with the deep tub and dual shower head, the thick towels, the Egyptian cotton bed linen, complete kitchen, linen closet with sunscreen, bug repellant, lots of extra bath towels and beach towels, washer and dryer off the kitchen, extra toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, central air conditioning, fire pit and gas grill. Beautiful sandy beach right out the back door. Two car garage with garage opener. Lovely perennial plantings around the house. We took side trips to tour Lambau Field in Green Bay, Cedarburg, Sheboygan, Oostburg and Gibbsville. Don't miss the Farmer's Market in Sheboygan. We loved our week in Wee Cozy Cottage. So did our dog!

Beautiful property right near the beach

  • 4 of 5

Only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that the water was so cold we couldn't swim and it was end of august. We did however kayak and use floats. The house is very comfortable and charming. The kitchen is great and if you like to cook as we do, you will find everything you need. Fire pit was awesome and there was plenty of wood. Cedarburg is about 20 minutes away and is a lovely town. Lots to peruse. Supermarkets real close (Sendik's and Piggly Wiggly). The beach is beautiful. Watching the sunset became a ritual. We also took lots of nice walks north and south of the property. It is so ideally located and the drive from Chicago was a mere 2 hours. I would return (with my wet suit!).
