About Judith Ronning

My grandparents were settlers here, in the winter I often wonder why they stopped here. But in the summer, you forget about the long winters and enjoy the beautiful lake, the cool evenings and all the birds and wildlife. The cry of the loons in the evenings is unforgettable. Eagles soaring overhead, a beautiful sight. The beavers swimming by, looking for more tender trees. One morning I awoke and they had taken my apple tree, a crab apple tree and a sugar maple! Now I plant my fruit trees far from the lake shore. I love gardening! Every time a birch tree died, a new garden was birthed in the rich soil. We love people and we love sharing this special spot with our guests who quickly become our friends.

Why Judith Ronning chose Cook

My husband's father bought this land back in the 50's. So we sit nestled in on land between his brother's and his sister's. It is a quiet haven, tucked in behind an island in a little bay. Years ago before everyone had GPS's, boats would come flying through here, thinking they were heading for TimBucTu and the Narrows but these days it is quiet. On opening fishing though there are always 4-5 boats in our little bay. Most of the summer we have fishing boats out front. One only needs to row out a ways in our 16-foot rowboat, available to our guests, and go fishing with the best of them!

What makes this cabin unique

"So peaceful," that is the comment we often hear as people step through the breezeway and see the setting, the gardens and Lake Vermilion. The breezeway is a comfortable sheltered spot to observe the lake, make and enjoy dinners on the grill. And everyone goes for the swing chair. "Room with a View," that was the name of a movie and I feel like that is what best describes our guest quarters, an awesome view from every window.

Warm Winter Get-away

  • 5 of 5

We went skiing on the frozen lake, lit fires in the wood burning stove, sweat in the sauna and cooked delicious meals in the kitchen of this charming little garage-turned-cozy-cabin. The perfect get-away for 2 people. The owners were kind, making sure there was enough wood for the fire, and the whole process was really easy and low key. Highly recommended!

Relaxing weekend away!

  • 5 of 5

Plenty of great Xcountry skiing nearby and close enough for a day trip to Giant's Ridge. Very comfortable, very clean and efficient use of space, gracious hosts, loved the sauna. We will be visiting this peaceful setting again.

Austin and I drove up the day after our wedding for a mini honeymoon, we spent Sunday to Thursday, early December, here and it was amazing. There was a fire in the wood stove when we arrived and always had wood to keep it warm and cozy in the cabin. It snowed lightly almost the whole time we were there and we enjoyed long walks down the drive way in the snow with our pup. The sauna was a huge plus to warm up in after being outside. I wish we could have stayed longer. Would definitely think about coming back. It was honestly the perfect relaxation getaway we needed after a crazy wedding week.

Nice, quaint little cabin

  • 4 of 5

Very nice place, right on the lake. Jack and Judy are great! Only "issue" was that the bed was a little soft for me. Otherwise it was a great little place that we hope to get back to!

Beautiful setting - Great fishing - friendly hosts!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I (and our two dogs) loved the beautiful setting, gardens and Judy and Jack, our hosts. The protected bay offered a perfect mooring for our boat, as well as great fishing. The bass and northern were hitting, and we had one of our most successful fishing trips ever. The small "cabin" was perfect for two - cozy and well equipped for cooking. My husband would have liked a regular table for eating though - the low chest was difficult for him to manage. Our dogs loved to swim at the beach area, and the secluded point offered a beautiful view of the lake. The only downfall would be the poor cell phone reception and no wifi. We had to go to town or a restaurant to send emails. All in all, though, a great place, and we'll definitely go back!
