Property type chateau / country house
Minimum Stay 3 - 30 nights

About the property

Large Craftsman Style Home Set Against The Magnificent Swan Mountains.

Nestled between tall evergreens and situated against the Swan Mountain Range of the Northern Rockies, sits this lovely craftsman style “Retreat Center.” Originally designed as a yoga retreat center, this unique Arts and Crafts style structure has been redesigned to accommodate guests for family reunions, vacations, and/or retreats of 30 days or more.

We invite people to retreat from their every day lives into the wilderness and forested sanctuary we have created at the edge of the Swan Mountain Range. We encourage our guests to unplug from their urban lives so that they might reconnect with their best selves, their loved ones and their source of inspiration. Our natural sanctuary is ideal for reflection and introspection and to reset intentions for answering your soul’s calling. We're especially interested in providing a peaceful and inspirational space for those pursuing creative projects and a desire to connect with the natural world.

This Retreat Center provides two spacious private bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, an office, a kitchen, an entry foyer, and a very large great room. Originally built as a yoga room, the great room boasts a wood floor, a stone fireplace, and beautiful craftsman style windows with huge views of alpine glowing mountains. Guests will also enjoy a fully equipped gourmet kitchen with a separate entrance perfect for caterers. The two bathrooms include two showers and the bathroom attached to the master bedroom includes a two person size sunken bath tub. There is a laundry room with a sink, counter, washer and dryer attached to the smallest bedroom. From the great room and master bedroom, guests can access a large covered patio to enjoy outside dining with incredible panoramic views of the mountains and its wildlife residents. Beyond the porch is a large lawn and pathway to our waterfall studded pond. Wireless Internet service and online streamed Netflix movies are also available to guests on two large flat screened television sets (1 in master bedroom and 1 in great room). On the same property, a few steps away, there is an additional guest house we call the Treehouse (see VRBO listing #470944) that accommodates up to 2 adults and 2 children.

Directly behind the property, guests will find immediate access to mountain trails and just a minute drive away there is access to rafting put-ins along the Swan River. Guests are also invited to share the beautiful surrounding grounds, a lovely waterfall studded pond, tree swings, hammocks, and private mountain bike trails. Our eight year old son is a wonderful little host and loves to show visiting children all the cool things this property has to offer, especially hunting for Morels in May. Guests may also like to visit with our goats, chickens, and special livestock guardian dogs (just beware of the electric fence), and to sample our fresh eggs. Because of our guardian and companion dogs, we do not allow other dogs onto our property.

About Lisa Gilbert

Originally from Southern California, we purchased this property to create a quiet self sufficient and sustainable life for our small family. We are raising goats, chickens, livestock guardian dogs, and organic fruits and veggies.

Lisa Gilbert purchased this chateau / country house in 2011

Why Lisa Gilbert chose Flathead Lake

This property is incredibly special and uniquely showcases the majestic qualities of each season. We love the variety of wildlife traversing the land, including deer, elk, moose, foxes, bobcat, raccoon, squirrels, bald eagles, ducks, geese, hawks, cranes, herons, owls and many other birds, most notably the wild swan. White Tail Deer tend to be the most common but are the most lovely and peaceful sighting. Occasionally, bear, wolf, and mountain lion are seen but our big guardian dogs keep these larger predators off our property.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

A cascading waterfall, reflective pond, large rock scape gardens, surrounding forest, and the back drop of the Swan Mountain Range offers a sacred space for family or organizational gatherings. The gorgeous mountain range, surrounding forest, cascading waterfall, reflective pond and large rock scape gardens provide magical photographic opportunities, especially during sunset when the sun casts an amazing panoramic alpine glow.

This enchanted venue accommodates a variety of events; from family reunions, and small workshops, to a simple romantic get-away or a family vacation destination.

We fell in love with this beautiful private property, the wilderness setting, and its unique craftsman style structures, and you will too!

Forest Bliss

  • 4 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at the Wild Swan. The setting was perfectly serene. Most of our time was spent on the back patio enjoying the mountain view or else just relaxing in the great room. The house has incredible custom finishes throughout and felt very homey. All of the beds, bedding and pillows were extremely cozy. The only thing we found a little inconvenient was there is no garbage receptacle on site which means that you have to pack all of your garbage out with you when you leave. We had a pickup so it wasn't that big of a deal but if you had a car/SUV it would be another story. Other than that, we wouldn't change a thing! We would certainly stay here again.

modern conveniences and world class views.

  • 5 of 5

Escape the summer heat and enjoy cool mountain breezes and fresh air. The owners of the wild swan have provide an amazing home for your enjoyment and will treat you like family. My 2 year old son and I greatly enjoyed this home for 2 weeks and can't wait to come back!! Best of all was allowing my son to start making the same Montana memories I have from my own childhood summers here. Such a magical place to unplug, relax and reconnect!! The best of Montana - modern conveniences and world class views.

Beautiful location and home

  • 4 of 5

Our group had a great time and it was very functional for a large group of adults (12 total). We never felt crowed due to the large living room and lots of outdoor space. The house was very well appointed with nice extras like shampoo in the showers and nice quality towels. I particularly enjoyed sleeping under the covered porch on the comfy deck furniture.

Beautiful and peaceful stay in Montana

  • 5 of 5

My wife and our 3 kids (13, 13 and 10) had a great time staying at this house. Three bedrooms were perfect for us with my wife and I in the master (what an incredible view of the mountains out the master window), the girls in one bedroom and son in the other. With the futton in the front room we could have easily had two more.

We were a bit nervous driving down the gravel road to the house but all nervousness washed away when we pulled up to the house and went inside. The materials and quality of construction are very high level. The kitchen isn't large but the subzero, Viking range, coffee pot, microwave, etc. made everything very nice. The store in Bigfork is about 10 minutes away and we made breakfast and dinner at the house each night.

The kids loved the tree swing and playing around the pond/water. I loved sitting on the back porch in the reclining chair, reading and looking at the mountains with a cold drink in hand.

During the stay we had deer (bucks, does and fawns) walk through the yard every day, as well as turkeys followed by babies. We spent two days at Glacier National Park and one rainy day shopping and eating in Kalispel and Whitefish. The location is secluded but also relatively close to everything. We had a great time and would recommend it without reservation.
