About the property

This luxury vacation rental Cabin in Smithville, Oklahoma, just north of Broken Bow Lake became available in November of 2016. Hilltop Getaway is situated on the highest point in Legacy Trails Cabins and has "above the tree line" panoramic views of the Kiamichi mountains in all directions. Legacy Trails Cabins is right on the Upper Mountain Fork river that feeds Broken Bow and is a short 3.5 hour drive from the DFW area. This 1300 sq. ft. cabin, with covered porches and an oversized back deck, has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. It has a full kitchen and a utility room with washer and dryer. It comfortably sleeps 8 people and has queen sized beds in two rooms and two sets of bunk beds in the other.

Legacy Trails Cabins provides 8 kayaks, life jackets and paddles for your use at no additional charge.

This cabin offers a cozy fireplace and an oversized outdoor fire pit area with 2 love seat rocking chairs, which make for a great place to roast marshmallows, make S'mores or just relax.

You can also check out Legacy Trails Cabins by staying at our other cabin, Hillside Hideaway (VRBO Listing #662225). Hillside Hideaway is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath cabin that sleeps 6 people and is more cozy and romantic, plus is less expensive, of course.

About Paul Granier

My family of four have lived in the North Dallas area for the better part of 20 years. All of us have grown up in Texas and my wife and I have graduated from Universities in Texas (Texas A&M and University of Texas). And now we run a staffing/search firm in Dallas. We like getting away from it all from time to time and this is one of the main reasons we bought this fantastic cabin.

Paul Granier purchased this cabin in 2016

Why Paul Granier chose Smithville

We liked our Hillside Hideaway Cabin so much and it is renting so well that we decided to build a second cabin! It is called Hilltop Getaway Cabin at Legacy Trails Cabins and became available in November of 2016. It is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath cabin and sleeps 8 comfortably. It is set at the highest point in Legacy Trails on a hilltop overlooking the Kiamichi Mountains in all directions.

We bought our first cabin because we were looking for a quick getaway place near water that was within easy reach of Dallas. We had looked and looked but had never found a place that had an attractive lake, a great lot and a beautiful cabin on it. When I saw Hillside Hideaway, I knew that that we had found the one we had been looking for and bought it immediately. Hillside Hideaway was brand new when we bought it in 2014 and was built with personal pride that shows.

Hilltop Getaway was hand-crafted by the same builder and is immaculately furnished. It sits on a hilltop with 3 acres of mostly wooded land and incredible panoramic views. And the 30-acre Legacy Trails neighborhood will be all vacation rental cabins set on 2-3 acres each with views of trees, rolling hills, creeks, wildlife and the Upper Mountain Fork river. Trust me, I am sure you will love Legacy Trails Cabins as much as we did when we discovered it.

What makes this cabin unique

If you want a secluded, peaceful getaway that is still close to the action, look no further. This cabin is set on about 3 acres, so it has a lot of privacy, yet has incredible views above the tree line in all directions. The view is amazing and the Mountain Fork River is about a 5-minute walk away. Fishermen will love this location, for sure. During the winter months, enjoy the gas fireplace and the wonderful fire pit area. Legacy Trails Cabins now offers kayaks at no charge for our guest and the Mountain Fork River makes for an incredible kayaking experience. Check out the pictures to get a feel for the river.

The cabin is very high-end and the beautiful workmanship on both the inside and the outside of the cabin are simply amazing. Just check out the pictures of the family room and kitchen.

There are many outside sitting areas. From the 32' covered front porch with swing, the full-length back covered porch (50') or the expansive back deck for those that only want a 'little' nature to the fire pit area for those that truly want to 'feel' the outdoors. Make sure to look up at night and see the stars like you have never seen before.

The first and second bedrooms have queen beds and the third bedroom has two bunk beds. The kitchen is fully equipped with the latest in appliances and conveniences and there is even a laundry room with a full size washer and dryer.

And being the gadget guy that I am, I could not do without an excellent surround sound system and Blu-ray DVD player. There is a whole assortment of movies and games to choose from, but no satellite TV service. Didn't you come here to enjoy the outdoors anyway?

But for those of you that cannot live without internet, wireless internet is available (please limit video streaming to one movie per day).

As far as phone service, AT&T Wireless and Pine Cellular work very well from within the cabin.

A beautiful, secluded getaway....

  • 5 of 5

Hilltop Hideaway was just what we wanted. We loved our stay. The property is absolutely beautiful. Upon arrival, the cabin looked identical to the pictures inside and out. They had music playing and the AC on which is a must in 90 degree heat.

Things we liked about the cabin:

Fully-stocked cabin (crock pot, blender, mixer, beach towels, games-literally seemed to think of almost everything)

New washer/dryer (no one wants to do laundry on vacation but with little kids and lakes, it's necessary). Also provided laundry soap and dryer sheets (we brought our own but they didn't have to provide it)

Comfortable beds

Beautiful fixtures and decorations

Nice quality linens and lots of them

Propane grill

Outside seating

Wood for the fire pit

Access to kayaks/canoe

Helpful property managers (PM) when needed

Wildlife all around

Some items that would improve the stay:

Ceiling fans on back porch because it got hot and muggy in the late afternoon/evening

Shelves in bedroom closets to place clothing (nice for those staying a week or more)

A nasty storm knocked out power for 11 hrs (not their fault but...) the power would also flicker or momentarily go out from time to time so it would be nice (and a huge PLUS) to have a wired backup generator. Yes, I know expensive but it would be piece of mind since the area is so remote. If that is not an option, a portable generator that the PM could provide in the event of an outage would be nice.

The cabin a small yard but clearing out some of the tall weeds a bit further down the hill would enhance the landscape and also provide more room for kids to play and have yard games out.

I read in a review that the river access was difficult. Owner did indeed put in nice stairs with handrail leading down. My only suggestion would be to add stairs going all the way up. Doesn't have to be cement as I'm sure you don't want to take away from the view but maybe put in RR ties dug into the hill to make it a lot easier. The aftermath of storms made it difficult to go up and down with little ones.

I will add that the river is a steep 5 min walk down the hill from Hilltop Hideaway so if you are planning to hang out at the river all day, you may want to take your vehicle. The river has little to no bank so not ideal for hanging out but a nice fishing spot. Bonus, they have adorable otters swimming around as well.

Overall, we absolutely loved it and want to come back during the fall/winter.

Owner's Response: Amanda - Thanks for the nice review and really glad you enjoyed your stay. So sorry about the long power outage, but that was highly unusual. Regarding your suggestions, we have already purchased luggage racks for each closet and they are being put in the cabins this week to help get clothes off the floor. And we do have plans this summer to add additional steps at the river (with railroad ties, actually!) to make river access even better. Thanks and hope you get a chance to visit again soon! Paul

Excellent cabin, well outfitted, with an excellent view.

  • 5 of 5

Both property managers(Laura and Darin) were very friendly and helpful. They had the air conditioner on so we had a cool cabin upon arrival. The cabin had plenty of pots and pans and eating utensils. The view was excellent and we especially enjoyed the fire pit. This is well out into the country and major chain grocery stores are non-existent so take most of your supplies with you. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the grounds. All in all--very enjoyable time.

The cabin was a great setting for our family if 5 + fur baby

  • 4 of 5

Highly recommend staying at this cabin. We loved the view; fire pit at night; two full bathrooms and well stocked kitchen.

The walk to the river is a bit farther than we assumed and requires sturdy shoes due to the rocky hill, but loved having access to the kayaks! Need a strong man to help get them back up the stairs though....

A few suggestions for the owner

The closets could use shelves and a luggage rack. Not so user friendly to keep every thing on the closet floor.

Would be helpful to have instructions to the 2 tv remotes

Amazing cabin to just get away !

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was great for us and our friends, my sister (visiting from abroad) and all 4 kids plus dog to just relax. Very spacious and comfy rooms. We loved the different walks and went down to the river to fish a bit. Highly recommended.

The Perfect Weekend Getaway!!!

  • 5 of 5

We are a busy little family of four so this little weekend trip was just perfect for us to get away from reality! We were able to allow our 14 and 16 year olds to roam the property and go hiking! They loved the freedom and we love the cozy cabin and all of the amenities! The views were amazing and it was just what we needed!!!
