About the property

4 Bedroom, 3.5 Bathroom Home With Endless Hiking, Hunting, Biking, Fishing

Privacy and peace in an estate with lots of room for friends and family. Private library and sunroom, great kitchen for family meals and total privacy on a large estate. You can hike 5+ hours on the property without seeing a human being. The house is a Scandinavian style Manor house that sleeps up to 12 (8 adults, 4 children) and has lots of room to lounge, including a classical library with the book collection of a famous author. Kick back and browse whatever books you'd like while you grill and look at stunning view. About 40 minutes from skiing and cute towns like Phoenicia and Livingston Manor. Fabulous road biking in the area, nearby farms, Catskills restaurants and 30 minute drive to the Shawangunk Ridge and all the fun of Ulster County. Tons of nearby additional hiking (if you somehow exhaust hiking on 400 acres) and near the famous Frost Valley YMCA. Great year round -- Fall leaf peaking, winter cross country skiing, Spring and Summer cookouts, hikes and croquet on the lawn.

Bliss Estate is also for sale. (Note for Renters: House showings are not held when the house is rented out.)

About louise mckee

We are a young couple with a new baby and we love to use our upstate home. But work obligations keep us in NYC sometimes and we want others to enjoy the estate when we can't get up there.

louise mckee purchased this chateau / country house in 2014

Why louise mckee chose Claryville

It's so rare to find so much private hiking and fishing. And Claryville is a totally undeveloped gem in the Catskills where most land is still natural forest.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The home was designed by Peter Pennoyer, a very toney architect who more often designs Hamptons homes. It was built by Louis Auchincloss, a famous NYC writer, and so it has a lovely library. It's a great place for families or groups of friends alike.

Beautiful home with plenty of room for a group

  • 5 of 5

Loved cooking in the kitchen and sitting in the high-ceilinged living room in front of the fire. The views from each room in the house are wonderful. Wish we'd gone in slightly warmer weather to take advantage of the incredible surroundings! Guess we'll just have to come back. :) Our only issue was with the wifi, which wasn't strong enough to stream movies clearly - but honestly we didn't really have many other reasons to use it, so it didn't detract from our stay. Louise was very communicative and kind, and I so appreciated her directions in advance of our stay. Thank you so much!

Unique house, lots of room, lovely woods and nothing but woods

  • 4 of 5

This house was designed by the eminent architect Peter Pennoyer for Louis Auchincloss, author, lawyer, and American-style aristocrat. It's fraying around the edges now, but still a fascinating space, with sleeping areas well spread out, flexible, and private. Bring what you need: there is no shopping, and nothing you could call a town for many miles around. No access to swimming (the famous Blue Hole is overcrowded and filthy, according to its website) but world-class fly fishing very nearby. (My son had great luck on the Willowemoc.) We didn't see the bicycle that is advertised but also didn't see anywhere we could have ridden it. A fabulous rental for a group or family that pretty much wants to stay put in the house and on the very nice deck. Good modern kitchen, poor WIFI. Deer galore and one black bear at dawn. Our three grandchildren--11, 14, 17--never mentioned the absence of a television, and everyone managed the very rocky but rewarding hike to Giant Ledge in Slide Mountain wilderness. (We did it on a slightly overcast Friday and met few other hikers; we drove by there on Saturday and the parking area looked like a Walmart's). Everyone had a fine time celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary.

Wonderful house in totally private setting

  • 5 of 5

We loved our week-long stay in this beautiful house (featured in Architectural Digest in 1992). We woke up everyday to see deer in the meadow below the house, and enjoyed exploring the long trails on the property. There are other hiking trails nearby, as well as a good swimming hole at Otter Falls about 25 minutes away. We were interested in waterfalls and found nearly a dozen within an hour's reach in various directions. This is a great base for exploring the Catskills and the Shawangunks.

An Amazing Weekend!

  • 5 of 5

A group of us went to the property for a relaxing weekend getaway with our dogs and had a great experience. The house is spacious and with a group of 7 and multiple dogs it never felt crowded. The kitchen was well stocked with appliances for cooking group meals and we enjoyed sitting outside on the deck to eat and relax. The highlight for us and the dogs was hiking each day on the property - it was nice not to have to get in a car to find hiking spots. We just entered the woods area from the backyard. Overall, we had a great experience and highly recommend the property. Also, Louise was responsive and gave us great detail about the property and area prior to our arrival.

This is an amazing property.

  • 5 of 5

This is an amazing property and the house is really cool. It is not your typical boring house. It was clearly designed for getting together with friends and family but the bedroom suites are very private. Entertaining on the huge deck is wonderful with dramatic views of the valley below. The common room with a fireplace - surrounded by windows - opens onto a covered area and then a few steps to the deck. The kitchen is perfect for big cooking - with access to a formal(ish) dining area under the library. The second floor library is circular with on opening (with railings) overlooking the first level dining table. There is also access to the common room with a serving window.

The house is built into the hillside so as you approach the house (far off the road) you drive through a covered portal into a secure cul-de-sac. The space above the portal is a beautiful sunroom that can be used as a kid's playroom or used as another bedroom. You will feel like you have your own castle - that is how we felt.
