Escape from the Real World

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in Ortnevik back in February 2009 and we left feeling like we’d spent a few days in another world.

The setting is idyllic, set into the hillside surrounded on all sides by snowy peaks and alpine forest, it’s like something out of a Norwegian fairytale. We stayed in the wooden cabin and immediately thawed ourselves in front of the open log fire while we became acclimatised to our new surroundings, it didn’t take long as the cabin is so well equipped it felt like a home away from home.

Ortnevik itself is a tiny village/hamlet so you shouldn’t expect a bustling nightlife or even anywhere to buy milk of a morning! The local store may not have been open daily but this only adds to the charm of the experience, plus Heidi and Eldar (our gracious hosts) were always on hand to help in any way that they could.

We spent our days wandering the hillsides and admiring the breathtaking scenery but always enjoyed retreating to our cabin when it began to get dark (about 3pm in February I think!). We were even able to borrow sleds which was a great way to re-live a small part of our childhoods – I don’t remember it being quite so exhausting then though!

Don’t be put off by the seemingly remote location of Ortnevik or the potential difficulty you might have in getting there, I guarantee that it is worth it. We spent a week in Norway, sandwiching Ortnevik in between stays in Oslo and Bergen and as enjoyable as both of those cities were it will be our cabin on the hill that will provide the lasting memories of our holiday.

Don’t delay book your escape from the real world now!

Enchanting and beautiful remote cabin

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at the cabin! It was pleasantly furnished with very friendly and accommodating hosts. If you're looking for a place to get away from it all, breathtaking views, enchanted forests, rushing waterfalls, then you have to stay here. We met the older gentleman who built the cabin and made all the buildings and carvings around the area. Truly a master craftsman! The road getting to Ortenvik can be a little intimidating since it's quite narrow along the coastline. The local store has a great variety of finds including the basics though there is limited hours.

We would come back to the cabin and village in a heartbeat!!

Stunning views, great cosy and very comfortable cabin. Couldn't have wished for a better holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of three with a five year old boy and booked this trip hoping the location would be interesting enough to keep a child happy and relaxing enough for the grown ups to chill out! It was perfect! The landscape changed daily, so our view from the cabin was breathtaking every moment of every day. The walks in the surrounding area kept us all interested (mum not so outdoorsy, husband very outdoorsy) and we even managed a little mountain climbing that wasn't too much for our son! It made coming home to the super cosy comfort of our cabin all the more delightful! We had a mix of snow, rain, fog and warm sunshine - the constant shift was lovely and this location would be wonderful any time of year. Would definitely go back! Worth noting that there is no local pub, bar, cafe or anything of that sort, so arrive prepared! It's very remote and this is it's charm.

Magical Place

  • 5 of 5

This is an enchanting place! We stayed 5 nights during the second half of our 2-week Norway holiday. The first week was so busy with sightseeing in Oslo, Bergen, and Flam, that we needed some time afterward to relax. The Wooden Cabin was the perfect place for that. It is so beautiful here. It rained much of the time, but that was okay. We did a lot of hiking and some geocaching, we got some groceries in the little shop, we borrowed the row boat and fishing gear one day, and one day we took the ferry to Vik and explored there (great stave church there and an interesting "cultural" trail). Anders, Eldar, Anna and Leo were very gracious to us. We absolutely loved the wood carvings and hand-crafted buildings on the property - a surprise around every corning - it just made the place seem so magical! We had a smile on our face from the first moment we arrived in the Ortnevik valley. The cabin suited our needs perfectly; the only improvement I would recommend would be an upgrade to the mattress, but that is because we prefer a little more cushion there. We would love to come back, with family, and stay in the Big Cabin, and show them all around. This place is lovely and so peaceful!

avwonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

We have had a great time during our stay in the wood cabin. We received a warm welcome and were impressed with the creativity, kindness and ingenuity of the owners. The wood, stone and big cabin are all very beautiful. The wood cabin has a homely feel, the floor heating and fire place as well as the kitchen and bath facilities made our stay very comfortable. The view is incredible and even though we had a lot of rain we have enjoyed the many walk around the village of Ortnevik. The small town shop is also very convenient. It is great fun to borrow the owner's rowing boat to have a paddle in the bay. We would love to come back here and see the surroundings in winter sometime.

Stunning area and perfect cabin experience

  • 5 of 5

I wanted to make sure I added a review for this accommodation because it really is a little gem. My wife and I escaped for 5 nights over Xmas and our only regret was that we did not stay longer. Roaring log fire, stunning view over the fjord, all the appliances you could need, clean and pristine.

The walks in the local area are so lovely we never went on any of our planned day trips. The snow that fell made the whole thing perfect!

We had a bit of hire car trouble but Elder and Anders were on hand to get us on the move again, thanks again.
