Beautiful cabin in a beautiful location!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the stone cabin, one of 3 beautiful & hand built cabins in a secluded valley overlooking the fjord.

The property itself was well equipped, clean and warm. The views from the windows are spectacular.

There are numerous hikes straight from the cabin onto the mountains or into the forest, all providing beautiful scenery.

There is a small shop in the village but it has everything you need. Although the village is quiet it is easy to get local ferries most days or to drive along the quiet roads.

We were made to feel very welcome and hope to return soon! We had a wonderful stay and would not hesitate to recommend this idyllic spot. Perfect if you want somewhere to relax or intend to hike, fish in the fjord (Eldar had a little rowing boat on the fjord) or cycle (also some bikes to borrow!) One of our highlights was seeing the Northern Lights from our cabin!

Thanks for such a lovely stay!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in the big cabin and we loved it! The cabin itself is amazing, it has got everything you need, outside the place is like in paradise with waterfalls, wild animals, surrounded with mountains. Car is not must but i would recommend it. We would definitely go back again.

Truly memorable holiday

  • 5 of 5

We (couple with 4 year old daughter) arrived after a flight to Bergen and then coach to Oppedal where the cabin owner (Eldar) collected us by car before taking us to the cabin. This is a good option as hiring a car looked expensive and would have been used very little as we intended to relax, have fun and just walk in the local area. Norweigan public transport is very good and reasonably priced so proved a wise move.

Booked on seeing pictures of the cabins and reading previous reviews. We had wanted to visit Scandanavia for a while and Norway seemed a good choice as we hoped a February visit would provide snow for how we imagined it 'should' be! We were not disapointed as we had snow throughout our 5 night stay yet the temperature was mild for the time of year at around 0C. We had been expecting it to be far colder so were certainly not cold with the clothes we had brought with us!

We stayed in the large log cabin which was very spacious, warm and beautiful. Underfloor heating in all but the two bedrooms was great and the log fire really made the evenings special. Everything we needed was in the kitchen and bathroom and the friendly owners even lent us a laptop and hairdryer for our stay.

The view over Sognefjord is magnificient, some days complimented by a blue sky others were striking with snow clouds rolling in. We wandered the nearby area as best we could with a 4 year old! Up a trail into the forest and another to a frozen lake all so tranquil and peaceful. We were lent sledges by the owners for our daughter (well we did have a go too...) which she adored.

Walked to the local shop (run by the mother of Eldar who was helpful and friendly) and bought some provisions which were delivered later on in the day to our cabin. The selection was very good, especially considering how small a population lives in Ortnevik.

Returned by ferry to Nordeide before taking an express boat to Bergen. Then went by train to Oslo which we highly recommend especially the initial part of the journey as it is very spectacular.

Really could not fault anything, even the weather played to plan. The whole stay was truly memorable and we are so glad we visited the special Ortnevik.

Ortnevik Dream

  • 5 of 5

I was recently in Ortnevik staying at your cabins with 17 other people and I just wanted to say what a fantastic time we had. It was the most wonderful place with such lovely, friendly people. We really enjoyed the peaceful stay as well as climbing the mountains and jumping in the fjord!

The Cabins were clean and comfortable. The firewood and heating were perfect and easy to use. Even without a car, travelling around was simple, although the walk back up to the cabins could get a bit tiring after climbing a mountain! The local shop was well stocked and the locals were incredibly helpful and kind. Catching the ferry was fine and the information provided very useful. It would have been better to have a little bit more information regarding the walking trails and the extent of the experience required to climb the larger mountain, especially considering some of the trail is no longer there. Still, we had a wonderful time and I would not hesitate to go back!

Ortnevik was a peaceful, charming oasis and I wouldnt hesitate to recommend Brekke cabins to anyone else. Thank you so much for an amazing holiday. They will be memories to last a lifetime and beyond :)

Owner's Response: Thank you for writing a review. We have had a great time having you all in our small village, the idea that you might come back or make a regular thing of this is very exciting for us. Most of all we like that you love it here, we think this is the most beautiful place, and that you liked it is what we are aiming for. So thank you for that. In response to your suggestion about the walking trails and more information. FOLD IN EACH CABIN There is a white A4 folder in each cabin with detailed maps and walking trail information. If it wasn't there or easy to find, sorry. The is an extremely high resolution map of the immediate area (10km a radius around the village) and National park for the more adventurous. This map was commissioned 2 years ago so is up to date as well as detailed for this area. However with your suggestion to provide more information than in the cabins, we will upgrade the website; our own website (brekke dot net) to include the walking information and maps so people can check it out & plan before they come. For those who are interested in a gentle stroll, the walking trails around the village are listed in each cabin folder and on the notice boards around the village. MOUNTAIN HIKING IN NORWAY When people ask us for timings and things, we do try to explain the terrain and altitude, but walking up 1000m in Norway normally means quite a challenge compared to walks in other countries. Generally the high mountain trails are deer trails and paths "not often walked" before July, our hiking season starts 01 July, because of the high altitude snow, so in April when you were here the trails are not fresh after the winter, a good map and map skills are essential. The village shop has a hikers GPS and high resolution maps with all the local paths marked in. The GPS is cheap to hire for the day and extra maps are in each cabin. Eldar did mention to Todd that the walk up to 1000m would take 4-5 hours to get up, plus the extra time to get back down, but this does depend on individual capabilities. That said you all did a fantastic job of making up 1000m, the village was dutifully impressed (I have yet to make it up there) that so many of you made it to the cabin at the top of the Fitje Mountain, especially if you were without a map, really it is impressive by anyones standards.
