About the property

Fun, relaxing retreat for couples, romantics, writers, and adventurers

Indulge yourselves with luxurious amenities and the peaceful, quiet settling of an exquisite garden, surrounded by vineyards, bamboo, and redwood trees. Relax in the intimate hot tub, refresh in the huge walk-in rain shower, dry off with decadent towels. A queen-size Dux premium mattress, as used in the very finest hotels, promotes a deep, restful sleep. Flowers, fresh fruit, snacks and a bottle of chilled Sauvignon Blanc will be present for you on your arrival.

Our early 2 PM check in and late 2 PM checkout policies allow you to arrive in the area without being stranded, and depart without being rushed.

The chalet is filled with light from the windows looking over the gardens; colorful Impressionist and local art adorn the walls; red oak hardwood floors provide beauty and warmth. Central air conditioning is at hand if needed.

Chalet Elaine is nestled on our 3-acre estate, populated with palms, bamboo, redwoods, and colorful tropical plants and flowers. Our estate was recently featured in the sold-out 2016 Spring Garden Tour.

Our neighborhood is near the top of Harrison Grade in the banana belt, a moderate microclimate suitable for growing many tropical plants, and usually above the occasional fog that might cover low lying areas. Cooled by the moderating ocean breezes, it doesn't have the extreme heat and cold variations of inland areas or the humidity of river areas. Surrounding us are vineyards, farmland, and country living, with a high representation of artists, musicians, intellectuals and those in the healing arts.

The Russian River Appellation is among the best growing region for Pinot and Chardonnay, which attests to the many top wineries (and wine tasting opportunities.) The Foodie scene is unsurpassed, with a broad selection of great restaurants. Entertainment abounds, a beloved Farmer's market takes place every Friday afternoon in Occidental during the summer, with many others in the area as well. The adventurous can ride a zip line through the local redwoods.

Should you desire a massage, or simply have peacefulness in their Japanese garden, the Osmosis Day Spa is first rate and just 10 minutes away in Freestone.

Doran Beach among many others is wonderful for a day by the ocean, nearby are wetlands for birding, and the headlands over Bodega Bay invite a spectacular hike - bring binoculars for whale watching.

The nearby village of Occidental is a treat. Do spend some time walking along Main St to discover good restaurants and taverns, an organic grocery, and interesting shops to browse through. At night you'll usually see lots of people having fun.

The town of Sebastopol offers the Rialto movie cinemas with special art and music features; nearby is the new Barlow district with wine tasting rooms from top wineries, restaurants, local coffee house, and Tibetan art. The park, across from Whole Foods, holds a popular farmer's market on Sundays; Main Street is a fascinating stroll of music stores, New Age shops, bookstores, coffee houses and restaurants. All of these form an easily walkable nexus downtown.

For those who just want to snuggle in, the entertainment system includes Comcast Xfinity X1 with voice command, and premium channel providers such as HBO and ESPN. AppleTV 4 provides additional internet choices such as iTunes and Netflix. ChromeCast 2 and the Samsung 46" internet-enabled HDTV widen your programming choices. The audiophile sound system includes a NAD 24-bit amplifier with Gallo Acoustics speakers. High speed 200 mbps WiFi is available. The system is well designed to play any content on your personal devices.

We provide Nespresso coffee + espresso, ground coffee, teas, and condiments such as 1/2 and 1/2. For your cooking enjoyment, the kitchen includes a GE Profile convection microwave, a FlashExpress infrared toaster oven, a Breville juicer, a crock pot and other implements. First rate local restaurants are all nearby.

The dressing area has a spacious closet with several drawers, and a built-in ironing station is at hand.

A whole house soft water system includes a decalcifier, UV sanitizer, and charcoal activated final stage filter for pure delicious water out of every faucet. Our 2-person hot tub is cleaned and refilled with this fresh water for each guest stay, and the water recycled to our gardens after your stay, so no harsh spa chemical treatments are needed.

PV solar panels grace the roof, promoting high end luxury with ecological sensibilities. A ClipperCreek Level 2 32A EV charger allows you to recharge your EV or Tesla.

About Chris Gayler

Lainey (pictured) lived for several years in Paris in her 20's, and later, Boston, for her graduate work; her european sensibilities help inform the delights of our chalet. She is a practicing psychotherapist, speaks French fluently (of course) and is my fellow adventurer and best friend. I (Chris) am a former technology entrepreneur with current interests in neuroscience, process and somatic psychology. We love to swim and hike, play ping-pong, and enjoy excellent cuisine, wines, travel, and good friends.

Chris Gayler purchased this chalet in 2008

Why Chris Gayler chose Sebastopol

We wanted to move from Los Altos to wine country, and friends suggested West County Sonoma. We fell in love with its character, its interesting and friendly residents, and the best of wine country and restaurants in a rural area without the traffic.

We were fortunate to find this property, formerly an exotic bamboo nursery with lush, exotic plants. We completely remodeled both the guest cottage and the main house. We found ourselves adjacent to the Village of Occidental, home to colorful and varied beings. Twenty minutes from the ocean, twenty minutes from Armstrong Woods for hiking, the world famous Osmosis day spa down the road, we continue to uncover new gems.

What makes this chalet unique

Our chalet is in an accessible, central location: In Occidental, just over a mile away, we shop at the local Bohemian market for organic and local produce and Gonella's for more standard fare with its large selection of wines and ice cream. For morning people, consider stopping by the cozy Union Hotel Cafe for a coffee and decadent cookie. Howard Station Cafe, the Tavern Microbrewery, the Union restaurant, Negri's, and the Hazel restaurant are just a few choices, all with different styles and clientele.

Simply stunning and such a wonderful, restful retreat!

  • 5 of 5

This property deserves 10 stars! It is exactly as described and so much more. I booked this place for me and my sweetie, who was coming in from out of town to provide a respite from construction going on at my house. It was amazing, and it truly felt like we were on vacation and we were only 9 miles from home! The chalet is charming, extremely comfortable, very private, equipped with everything you could possibly want or need, and decorated with a color palette that delights and soothes. There were four outside seating areas, each strategically placed to accommodate a specific focus; comfortable couches on the front porch for sipping a cool drink while admiring the incredible gardens, a table with shade for dining by the grill, a table and chairs to rest outside the hot tub, and lounge chair seating for two in the garden to admire the roses and hummingbirds with a sip of wine. The stunning 'shower room' in the bath is pure heaven and all the linens and bedding are first rate! The house was literally spotless to the point that it looks as if it was just built and you're the first guest! We could not have been more impressed and delighted when we walked through the door. The directions for arriving and getting onto the property and into the house were simple, straightforward, and worked perfectly. We were welcomed with beautiful organic fruit, cheese, wine, crackers, and snacks. All well-chosen high-end products and delicious. The coffee and tea selections (4 ways to brew coffee for you aficionados!) were top rate with cream and orange juice in the fridge to start the day. The bathroom soaps and supplies were also all natural, organic, and there was plenty of everything. I have to say the owners do a fantastic job of making you feel like you deserve to be treated to the best! I would most certainly return and highly recommend you visit Chateau Elaine if you want an exquisite experience you won't forget. Thank you, Chris, for such a delightful stay! ~Danna

A great spot for a quiet 2-person retreat

  • 5 of 5

We have been staying in VRBO houses for years and this house is the most thoroughly furnished house in which we have stayed. No detail was overlooked by the owners including welcoming wine, cheese and cookies. The house is very well decorated including original paintings. We have no suggestions regarding how it could be improved -- it is exceptional!

The surrounding gardens are beautiful and contribute to the quiet seclusion -- a great retreat after daily tours of the wine country, coast, etc.

A Pampered Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We were welcomed to the beautifully appointed and well-maintained chalet with flowers, wine, and lavish edibles. Did I mention the white robes ready for the outdoor hot tub? Add this to the ambiance of sunlight and privacy, and you'll claim you're being treated to a pampered retreat. We bought food to make simple dinners, but our one night out we ate at Negris in Occidental. Wow! the food was delicate and delicious, the perfect match for the classy elegance of Chalet Elaine. Thanks Chris and Elaine for sharing your beautiful retreat.
