Near Carcassonne, in the small Languedoc village of Montlaur, two ancient Mills. Described by the Times Online as one of 31 most unusual holiday homes in Europe:

... 'Sit outside to watch the sunset as your nostrils fill with the aroma of mint and lavender'. ....

Historically interesting 13th century stone Windmills. Charmingly renovated, open-plan, providing a fabulous holiday home for 4 people in each mill.

We put a complementary bottle of our own traditionally made red wine in your Mill for you. From Grenache Noir grapes in our small adjoining vineyard.

You can't get more unique than these Medieval Mills. Small but perfectly equiped in the gorgeous setting of unspoilt Mediterranean nature they provide a holiday you will never forget.

Luxurious, heated swimming pool May till Oct. ! Near air temperature! Private grass tennis court, not Wimbledon of course. Home made and very bumpy! football goals on tennis court. English satelite TV. Barbecue available.

10 acre domain of glorious countryside, on a hill, private, yet at the edge of a small village in Aude, magnificent views. Beautiful sunsets with our Camargue horse outlined against the horizon.

Dating to 13th century, one of the first windmills in the South of France.

Our pets, little dogs, cats, parrots, horse and chickens.

Fantastic walking and in beautiful unspoilt nature.

Gastronomic delights in the region are numerous. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the luxury of world famous French Cuisine at very reasonable prices.

Exciting new Italian restaurant called 'Bourdasso' in a Chateau just down the road.

Around the Mills: The ancient miller's house, where we live, is near the mills. Our ten acres of 'garigue' surrounding the mills has wild thyme, rosemary, mint and lavender among many other plants growing wild and has supposedly medicinal properties. It certainly emits a gorgeous perfume. We have our own little vineyard. You will be given a complimentary bottle of our delicious red wine. Grown and prepared in the ancient classical way!

We have dogs, cats, chickens , a horse, and parrots. So, though we adore animals you will not be able to bring yours. Our little dogs, Lolita and William, both Coton de Tulears, adore visitors and will welcome you to our grounds. For more photos of 'La Couscouillette' as our country estate is called, and stories about our animals please click Golf at 25 minutes from the mills at Carcassonne nearby the famous Cite Medieval

Village Activities: The friendly, wine producing village provides walks, excursions and village open air dances and (occasionally) meals in the summer. The small supermarket, there's a butcher, post office and pharmacy. Our lovely old horse is a Camargue and very friendly, loves to be given bread and carrots. Not suitable for riding but horses can be sometimes be rented locally.

Fantastic sightseeing: for instance the famous Medieval Walled City of Carcassonne is reached in 25 minutes. There are beautful abbeys nearby and of course the Cathar Castles, from the early Middle Ages, are worth a visit. In fact, the mill itself dates from the Cathar period (1266) and is probably the first windmill in the South of France.

Drive through beautiful countryside to the Dinosaur museum at Esperaza. It's at an hour's drive from here and it will take you back 70 million years.

In 1988 Allan and I moved here permanently. He carried on teaching his students abroad via video conferencing (Physics Prof) and lecturing occasionally as well as doing research. I stopped my Clinical Psychology Psychotherapy practice and went in for spinning, weaving, goats, horses, chickens, gardening etc. This 'back to nature' period left us with the chickens (eggs!), 1 old horse, a vineyard (wine) and a beautiful wooded area around the Mills, having planted almost 1000 trees.

About Margaret

In 1988 Allan and I moved here permanently. He carried on teaching his students abroad via video conferencing (Physics Prof) and lecturing occasionally as well as doing research. I stopped my Clinical Psychology Psychotherapy practice and went in for spinning, weaving, goats, horses, chickens, gardening etc. This 'back to nature' period left us with the chickens (eggs!), 1 old horse, a vineyard (wine) and a beautiful wooded area around the Mills, having planted almost 1000 trees.

Margaret purchased this chateau / country house in 1977

Why Margaret chose Lezignan-Corbieres area

These Mills are extremely unique. Historically as well as beauty and comfort wise. Built during the Cathar Wars in 1260 the 'Couscouillette Mills' are described in a book researched at the turn of the last century by a Catholic Priest delving in ancient annals at a nearby Abbey, the book was recently republished, La Couscouillette fills a chapter.

But as well as the important history, the positioning of this domain, on top of a hill with beautiful views and surrounded by 10 acres of countryside, including our little vineyard is unbeatable. We put a complementary bottle of our own traditionally made red wine in your Mill for you. From Grenache Noir grapes in our small adjoining vineyard.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

We adore La Couscouillette, the peace and quiet, the views, the gorgeous heated pool and sense of peace is just perfect.

Like a paradise

  • 5 of 5

We had 11 wonderful days at the Pointed Roof Mill. Our hosts were extremly friendly as well as Willy, the sweet little dog, visiting us from time to time. The garden area is like a well kept park. The pool was of good relief, because the summerdays were of unusual heat. The mills are very extraordinary, a perfect place to stay, when your seeking quietness and a time off of your usual allday living.

We very much want to come back. Thanks a lot to Margret and Allan who by the way sell their own tasteful wine. And thanks as well for the eggs.

Great get away!

Excellent location for a family holiday, children enjoyed the pool and the helping out with the animals. Accomodation had everything we needed. Carcassonne is a short drive away and certainly worth a visit. We had a great time and would certainly go back.

Sloping Roof Windmill

  • 5 of 5

Two of us stayed for a very enjoyable week at the Sloping Roof Windmill in May. Owners on hand were helpful but discrete. Views from the site are breathtaking. The pool is immaculately maintained. The mill itself is `cosy` and had everything we needed - even fresh eggs on demand ! Not sure we would have liked it as much with 4 people in the mill, but for 2 it was fine. The road up to the mill is somewhat steep & `tight` and not for the faint-hearted but this added to the adventure of staying in a 13thC Windmill ! We lunched at a different restaurant each day in the area and never had a bad meal. All in all an excellent stay for us.

A place to get away from it all

  • 4 of 5

When I found this rental online, the history and location sounded so appealing. After contacting the owner, and making the deposit, I was happily surprised at how easy it was to plan this trip. The owner sent me information on the windmills, the surrounding property and village, so we were well prepared and found the property quite easily.

Montlaur is located about half an hour from Carcassone, making it a central spot for touring the area by car. The windmills are perched on a hilltop over the small village and has the most fantastic views, especially sunsets.

Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and we had rain and high winds for half of our stay in early May. However, that did not stop us from walking around the property which still maintains that natural rugged openness from years gone by.

The owners were most accommodating and made us feel very welcomed with fresh eggs and wine. The new pool was inviting (although not quite warm enough while we were there) and we did dangle our legs in the water and enjoyed the sun on the deck when it did make its appearance.

There are two lovely horses and two dogs which we thoroughly enjoyed visiting with. The horses are allowed a free run on their fenced area and it was thrilling to watch them and the neighbouring horses running along the hills.

The windmill itself was very quaint and cosy. There were four of us (two couples) sharing the mill which has the kitchen and dining area on the ground level. The kitchen had modern appliances and was stocked with every cooking utensil needed.

Climbing up the curved steps was a bit of a challenge especially with luggage, and I made sure to hold on to the bannister, so I wouldn't recommend this property to anyone with leg or back problems.

The bedrooms were very basic and tiny, but we expected that. There was one bathroom on the middle floor which was tiny but adequate with the most fascinating window and view! The double bed was a futon type and adequate. The top floor had two twin beds with very basic furnishings.

Overall, the property is ideal for a couple or a young family (not babies or toddlers though) or very close friends as there is a lot of space sharing! I personally liked the property but my husband found it a bit cramped. He admits if the weather had been better, he would have enjoyed it more. My girlfriend and I would like to return one day for a ladies week bringing our cameras to capture the breathtaking area.

Erholung pur, Platz für Kinder, super freundlich

  • 5 of 5

Owner's Response: Thank you Manuela, Stefan and Luca for your very appreciative comments. We're happy that you had such a nice time here and that Luca enjoyed building the gate to Tempie with Allan. The Pointed Roof Mill is indeed fantastic and very special as well as comfortable. The pool is as you mention essential for a perfect day in the heat. Thanks again and hope to see you here before too long!
