Canyon Road/ Acequia Madre -- Historic Eastside Casita

Bedrooms 1
Space 475 sq ft
Property type guest house
Minimum Stay 29 - 30 nights

About the property

475 sq foot casita ... sleeps 2.

This 475 sq. ft. guest casita is located in a private compound off of Acequia Madre, one of Santa Fe's most historic streets (Acequia Madre runs parallel to Canyon Road, on which many of Santa Fe's art galleries and restaurants are located). The casita is located on a particularly quiet one-way section of Acequia Madre, down a private cul-de-sac. The casita is adjacent to the owner-occupied house and consists of a large living room with fully equipped kitchenette, a bedroom with a queen size bed, and large bathroom. The casita, which has gas heat, retains a large degree of privacy, with its own entrance off of the driveway. It works well for a single person or a couple ... it is not suitable for two unrelated persons. The casita exemplifies Santa Fe's traditional stucco architectural style, with stuccoed walls, beamed ceilings and other southwestern traditional architectural elements.

Acequia Madre (the "mother Acequia") gains its name from the fact that Santa Fe's oldest irrigation ditch (acequia), dating back 400 years, runs along the road. This compound is located on a particularly quiet section of Acequia Madre, where the road becomes one way. Much of the traffic along the road is pedestrian. Acequia Madre is one of the most sought-after streets in Santa Fe, and exemplifies Santa Fe's historic character. There is a large park (Patrick Smith Park) nearby.

For anyone who has had to contend with finding a parking spot on Canyon Road, either during tourist season or around Christmas, having a place to stay in such a secluded and distinctive environment, a minute or two away from Canyon Road, has to be considered a huge benefit.

It is a pleasant 20 minute walk from the compound to the Santa Fe Plaza.

About John Lamb

The owner is a retired attorney who also studied art history at the graduate school level, and has a particular interest in historic architecture. The owner has also renovated and furnished a historic "mid-century modern" condo in Palm Springs, which is also available for rent from time to time..

John Lamb purchased this guest house in 2010

Why John Lamb chose Historic Eastside

I chose my house primarily due to its location, which is A+ in Santa Fe terms. The casita exemplifies traditional Santa Fe architecture, and includes many traditional southwest architectural details. I particularly wanted a quiet, peaceful, private location with mature trees and loads of ambiance, which this casita possesses.

What makes this guest house unique

Ambiance ... both in unit and in the surrounding neighborhood, which includes not only art galleries and restaurants, but a quiet neighborhood park 3 minutes away. There are numerous nearby walks along both paved and dirt roads in the immediate neighborhood. Some of Santa Fe's leading restaurants (Geromino's, El Farol, and the Compound) are within easy walking distance, as is the Downtown Subscription coffee house, which also acts as an informal neighborhood meeting place. It is a pleasant 20 minute walk to the Santa Fe Plaza.

A true gem in the heart of old Santa Fe

  • 5 of 5

This sweet little casita provided all I needed! Everything is walking distance if you like to take walks like I do. I loved my stay there and would love to come back. John was out of the country while I was visiting and yet was always available and very reliable via email whenever I had a question. Thank you, John!

This property is located in the heart of Santa Fe's historic Eastside on Acequia Madre, one block South of Canyon Road and a 5 minute walk from such restaurants and coffee houses as Geronimo's, Downtown Subscription and El Farol. It is a 15 minute walk to the Santa Fe Plaza. Acequia Madre is one of Santa Fe's most historic streets, and this property is located on a particularly quiet area of the street, down a private lane. Santa Fe is consistently ranked within the top favorite US vacation destinations by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine.

Santa Fe is pleasant to visit any time of year. July and August are the peak visitor months, with many cultural events (the Opera and Chamber Music Festival for instance), as well as Indian Market. During other months, however, the Lensic Theater features concerts (both popular and classical), and other Santa Fe musical organizations offer concerts year round, as do museums with exhibits. December offers the famous "Christmas Stroll" on Canyon Road on Christmas Eve. Early spring is spectacular with blossoming fruit trees.
