Tucked behind an aged plum tree and lovely privacy fence, this 480-square foot bungalow was designed and built by our family for friends, families, and visitors who want to experience Portland’s vibrant Alberta neighborhood. It sits on the footprint formerly occupied by a 1909 garage, provides travelers a warm, wonderful, and comfortable stay only steps away from the bustling eateries and shops of the Alberta Arts District.
Inspired by Pacific Northwest materials and values, walls are clad with ship-lap boards reclaimed from the old garage, wood countertops and benches repurposed from Silver Fir lumber originally used to construct the local AMF Pro Bowling Alley, and bannisters and handrails crafted from old-growth clear vertical grain Douglas Fir from deconstructed Portland homes. The spectacular exposed, vaulted ceiling was milled using sustainably harvested Canadian Douglas Fir. During the more temperate months, the entry patio provides an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.
Above all, the home is open and airy with massive skylights and banks of windows allowing it to breathe, absorb and circulate light.
Guests can access the home from the driveway adjacent to the main residence, and may utilize the front patio area and the entire home.
A few notes:
~ The home has steps, a few down to the main entrance and a dozen to the upstairs loft-bedroom.
~ As in our own home, we have a very strict no-shoes policy and ask you take your shoes off inside the front door. We have provided house slippers for those who prefer to wear shoes in the home.
~ The main level has polished concrete floors that can get cold at times. Please feel free to wear the house slippers we have provided, should you wish to use ours; or, please feel free to bring your own.
~ Street parking is available anywhere in the neighborhood, but can be scarce at peak times. If you have a certain need for on-site parking, let us know ahead of time and we can arrange for access to our driveway.
~ We live in the main residence on the property with two kids and two Labrador dogs. You may occasionally hear or see us. We are also available if something arises.
