About the property

2 Bedroom -- 1 Bathroom -- Sleeps 6

Mountain Retreat is a country styled home nestled among cedar, pine, and cottonwood trees. Completely secluded on over an acre and boardering National Forest, Mountain Retreat is the perfect location for hunting, fishing, cross-country skiing, whitewater rafting, hiking, or simply relaxing. Located 10 miles north of Gardiner, MT, the North Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, and about .75 miles from Hwy 89 Mountain Retreat is close to the action but far enough away to miss the crowds.

Cedar Creek, a native cutthroat spawning stream, flows along the edge of the house which provides breathtaking views out of many windows throughout the home. The sound of the creek lulls you to sleep at night for an incredibly restful and relaxing experience.

Mountain Retreat is ideally located for those who want easy access to fishing and hiking. From your doorstep a mile and a half easy hiking trail takes you up the mountain to the OTO Dude Ranch. The OTO is steeped in history and illustrates the fascination so many have with the American West at the turn of the century. The book Music, Saddles, and Flapjacks, a copy is located at Mountain Retreat for your reading pleasure---is a great read about the pioneers of the dude ranching movement at the OTO. If fishing is what you're after, Mountain Retreat is 10 mins from 4 different fishing accesses. The Yellowstone River is a blue ribbon trout stream and excellent river to hone your fly-fishing skills on and enjoy a day on the water.

We love our piece of paradise along Cedar Creek and want to share it with our guests. Mountain Retreat is a unique property and we will strive to make sure it is the best experience possible for you!

The house has 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other has a double bed. It also has a multi-use room with two single beds. There is 1 bathroom in the house. The living room has a fire-place and views of the beautiful surroundings out both picture windows. Along the back of the house is a covered porch with chairs and a BBQ grill for your use along with a picnic table all looking out at Cedar Creek.

About Diane Burgard

My name is Diane Burgard. I am now retired, but was a school teacher, homemaker, and business owner. I ran Mountain Retreat as a vacation rental from 1990 - 2002 before the vacation rental movement became popular. My daughter and her family are now helping get it up and running as a vacation rental again after taking an extended hiatus from it. My daughter's boyfriend completely remodeled the house and hand crafted all the interior finish work. Our family owns the three properties before you reach Mountain Retreat along Cedar Creek Road. We are onsite and willing to help make your vacation memorable in any way we can.

Diane Burgard purchased this chateau / country house in 1989

could not have been more perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this little home. It was clean, comfortable, and well-equipped with plenty of room. We loved how private it was, backing up to woods, with beautiful views and elk that would come and graze in the lawn. It was also in a great location- quick drive into Gardiner for the grocry store, laundromat, restaurants etc. And the same quick access to Yellowstone National Park. We went into Yellowstone every day and found that Mammoth Hot Springs was an ideal gateway point because it was far more equipped than some of the other points we drove through. For example it has an onsite clinic and unexpectedly my 8 year old got strep throat on our 2nd day. They were able to see him and prescribe antibiotics which allowed him to feel better quickly and enjoy the trip with us.

I have 3 kids and they all loved what they called our "cottage." The sounds of the creak outside lulled everyone to sleep and we were all very comfortable. We would love to stay here again in the future.

Many thanks to the property owners!

Wonderful cabin; great host

  • 5 of 5

We were pleasantly surprised by this cabin. We arrived to a very clean place, a little bowl of treats, and a bottle of wine. Diane came up to introduce herself, and is a really enjoyable lady. We did have trouble w/the grille one night, and she responded quickly, even offering to compensate us for our troubles. I wouldn't hesitate to rent from her again.

A few things that potential renters should know. The driveway is quite long and ungraded, so take it slow. The cabin is the last building on the drive, which is shared by several homes/rentals; not knowing this, we temporarily thought that we couldn't find it. The place is basically a 2-bedroom plus a porch w/ 2 twin beds. We were there in late Oct., so the porch would be unusable at that time of year due to the cold. The place is heated by space heaters in the living & dining areas, so the bathroom (in the middle of the place) can be somewhat chilly this time of year, but is certainly acceptable.

This is one of the cleanest places we've rented, and seems very well maintained. Even the towels provided were large & plush; a small thing, but much appreciated, especially compared to linens we've found at other rentals. Location is great; 10 miles from the park entrance. We looked at several places near Emigrant, which would have been much longer drives. There is a nice little stream running right next to the place (~10 feet), which adds to the ambiance. Kitchen is adequately stocked w/ eating & cooking dishes. The dining table is sizable; would easily seat 6.

All in all, a wonderful place with a gracious host!

Always enjoy Yellowstone

  • 3 of 5

Property was clean and private, and the creek behind the house was very pretty, but overall this was not what we had expected for the price. It worked for the 4 of us because we spent most of our time in the Park. Some things to be aware of: 1) not a lot of available electrical outlets and the ones there are located along the baseboards; a problem if you travel with a lot of devices. 2) only 1 mirror in the place. Because the outlet is located at the baseboard on the opposite wall in the bathroom, it's a challenge to see to blow dry or curl your hair or use an electric shaver. 3) only 1 closet had a rod and hangers. It would have been nice to hang jackets damp from rain/snow. 4) NO TV service - a minor concern for football fans. There is a DVD player and some DVDs.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I’m very sorry you had some issues with our home. It is a rustic and very quaint house that was built in the 1950’s and remodeled recently. We plan to add an electrical outlet right by the sink in the bathroom to make it easier for people to do their hair and shave. I’m sorry that was an inconvenience for you. We plan to add a mirrror in each bedroom for next season. Thank you for that suggestion. There is a rod with hangers in the entry room to hang up wet clothes as well as the master bedroom. I’m sorry you didn’t notice the coat rack right in the entry room with five hooks across it to hang up coats as well. I do not advertise having tv service but we do offer a new flat screen tv with a nice assortment of dvds. As for price, our home it is a great value. Guests get an entire home in a beautiful location that sleeps 6 people very comfortably for cheaper than most hotel rooms in Gardiner. I hope all future guests look at my other 31 reviews from incredibly satisfied guests. Thanks for your suggestions, we always strive to make our home the best it can be!

Awesome location, spacious cabin, with responsive and helpful owners

  • 5 of 5

We really liked the setting - lovely and very private cabin, nestled in trees and snugged up against the mountains with a creek running right by the cabin just footsteps away. Before reserving we read many of the reviews, and we also would recommend this place. It is a short 10 minute drive to Gardiner so you can be at the Yellowstone park entrance in a very short time - and you have easy access to shopping for any supplies you might need. The grocery store in Gardiner is amazing, totally unexpected for a town of that size.

We really appreciated the room in the cabin. There were five of us - my wife and I, our daughter and her two children (ages 8 and 10). Kids were in one bedroom, daughter in another and my wife and I in the largest. The family room with TV was far off from kitchen dining area so kids could watch TV without bothering the rest of us.

The wifi worked consistently, TV and dvd player worked well, we did a lot of cooking (really don't care to eat out much) and everything worked well (stove, grill, frig).

On one of our day trips to Yellowstone we somehow managed to lose the key to get into the cabin. We didn't get back until late - almost dark - we contacted the owner and she provided us with another key right away. We also talked to her about things to do in the area and she gave us a good recommendation for horseback riding, and a nice hike nearby to the 'historic dude ranch'. She is very knowledgeable about the area.

Map

Nearest Airport
75 Miles
Bozeman/Yellowstone International Airport

Mountain Retreat is located feet from Cedar Creek, a native cutthroat spawning stream, and five miles from the nearest fishing access to the Yellowstone River. We are avid fly-fishing enthusiasts who spend countless days on the river and would be happy to advise you with any info you may want regarding fishing in our area. Kayaking, whitewater rafting, and stand up paddle-boarding are other incredibly fun ways to explore and enjoy our area on the mighty Yellowstone River. Other notable activities include soaking and grabbing dinner at Chico Hot Springs Resort located approximately 20 miles from Mountain Retreat or you may choose a more natural soaking experience and venture into Yellowstone to Boiling River located 13 miles from Mountain Retreat. If hiking is what you're looking for or just a casual walk both can be accomplished feet from the door. The historic OTO Dude Ranch, Montana's first Dude Ranch, is located above Mountain Retreat with an easy open road hiking path that is approximately 1 1/2 miles.
