About the property

18th Century Bastide with four beautifully appointed bedrooms all with bathrooms

In the heart of a small hamlet of the Luberon, only 5 minutes from Bonnieux, this magnificent 18th century 'Bastide' (French Manor House) has been perfectly refurbished and has kept all its authenticity.

From the moment you arrive you will be under its matchless spell, feeling welcomed and embraced: whether on the terraces and gardens, or in the rooms of the ancient Bastide, you are enveloped in a timeless peace, quiet and happiness.

The property offers 200 sq m of living space (beautiful fitted kitchen dining room with Lacanche cooker, magnificent sitting room room with open log burning fireplace, grand hall, second sitting room with media centre, 4 luxurious bedrooms each with en-suite bathrooms).

Excellent free high speed wifi connection & good mobile phone reception.

Magnificent gardens of 3,000 sq m with fruit trees and Mediterranean scents. Wonderfully situated 12M x 4M swimming pool and summer kitchen on second terrace level. Panoramic views of the most beautiful villages of the Luberon. Comfortable shaded outside areas with comfortable chairs, tables & loungers for relaxing and eating al fresco.

Sitting at the outside terrace or at the farmhouse table in the kitchen with the view of the Luberon as the sun rises and sets, is startlingly beautiful. At night the Marquis de Sade's chateau above Lacoste, which is directly opposite a few miles across the valley, is illuminated and incredibly romantic.

About Nick Morant

I am a Tech Entrepreneur & Corporate Financier based in London, and a would be writer. I split my time beween London and La Bastide, which is our much loved home for myself and my three young adult children.

Nick Morant purchased this chateau / country house in 2015

Why Nick Morant chose Bonnieux

I love France and particularly Provence and have spent many a happy holiday exploring the area looking for the perfect home. I came across La Bastide during a long walk - as I rounded a bend there it was - the house of my dreams in the most idyllic position. It had everything I wanted - architectural merit, beauty and charm, gorgeous terraced gardens facing towards the long afternoon sun with views unsurpassed. But I had no idea that it was on the market so filed it away in the back of my mind as the house of my dreams. Then low and behold one gloomy English winter's day I come across it on the internet and it was for sale. The rest is history.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

La Bastide is a house with real history and positioned on the hills looking down over the Luberon valley is in a magical and private location. We love the peace of the place and how it lives in its landscape amongst the vines, cherries, olives and other produce of the region. From the house one can walk down into the vineyards or up into the Luberon mountains. La Bastide has been authentically restored by local artisans who knew how to keep the enchanting charm of this beautiful house, whilst adding modern luxuries. Every piece of furniture in the house has been chosen with care, some from the antique markets in Paris and some in the local region. The house makes a wonderful place to explore or it can be the place you never leave and just relax completely. Our guests, our friends and our family fall in love with the house, and many local friends say that it is perhaps the best house in the whole region.

The house is run by a house manager Sally and her husband Scott who live locally and both speak fluent English and French. They are devoted to the house and highly valued. The house will of course be prepared for your arrival and for each week of your stay 6 hours of cleaning is also included. Scott comes once a week to care for the garden and pool. Sally is able to organise most things that would make your stay perfect including a chef at home, nanny's and babysitting, spa treatments, horse riding, golf, booking restaurants and advising on local activities such as visiting markets.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in this lovely house set in the hills of the Luberon Valley. Settle in for the week. Wake up each morning, venture to Bonnieux for pastries then enjoy them out by the pool while you watch the valley wake up beneath you. Drive to the market at L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue to buy food for the week and treasures for your loved ones back home. As the evening descends, watch for the lights of nearby Lacoste to appear--you'll hike there from Bonnieux the next morning and delight in getting lost. Make sure to enjoy a catered meal in the house--Brigitt makes a mean Soup Pistou. And if you don't know what to do, Sally knows--just ask.

Exquisite, authentic, immaculate, serene, convenient.

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family of eight spent a blissful week at La Bastide. Among our favorite things: the authentic Provencal decor, which lends a timeless, serene beauty to the immaculate rooms. The panoramic view from the kitchen window and the brilliant sunsets. Morning coffee and figs from the tree in the garden at the big scrubbed pine kitchen table. Evening wine outside while the sun slips over the mountains. Nick's eclectic and absorbing library. Sally's expert care, cheerful support, and her lovely family . Marie as our guest chef for a magical Provencal dinner. I could go on and on with reasons to love La Bastide; suffice it to say that we have already booked for next year.

The perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

From the moment of our warm welcome we all felt at home in the relaxed beauty of La Bastide. It provided the perfect setting for our family to regroup and spend some much valued quality time together. The house was well equipped with everything we needed from barbecuing by the pool to candlelit evenings on the upper terrace. Nick provided a lot of really useful information which made our planning of trips out very easy and Sally -Ann was at hand to help with anything we might need without being intrusive. La Bastide is a fabulous house in a very beautiful and unspoilt part of Provence where some very special memories have been created for us.

Heavenly vacation

  • 5 of 5

We returned for a second time this year, and had another heavenly vacation at La Bastide des Chapelins. Four couples, all good friends, in total comfort in this capacious highly functional home. We love the countryside for painting, bike riding and touring; the vineyards for tasting and buying local wines; the local people for their friendliness. Great nearby restaurant choices if you want to go out; fabulous local markets and great working kitchen if you choose to stay in. Nick is an attentive landlord, and Sally nails the details.

Amazing week in a beautiful home.

  • 5 of 5

Our week at La Bastide was wonderful. After viewing the beautiful pictures on VRBO, we looked forward to seeing it in person. Absolutey stunning! The home had everything to make our stay comfortable, - a welcome basket of goodies and wine when we arrived, fresh cut flowers in our bedrooms, the landscaping pristine, and the view incredible. Sally met us and showed us the house and grounds. Brigitte came and cooked for us twice while we were there and taught us how to make aioli. The weather was warm enough to lay out by the pool and most of us had a refreshing swim. We absolutely loved the area and hope that a return trip will be in our future.

Fabulous property

  • 5 of 5

From the moment that we checked in until we drove out of the gate a week later we had a wonderful experience.

La Bastide is absolutely beautiful. The photos and description were dead-on accurate. The response to our inquiry as well as the information provided was handled very professionally and in a timely manner. Between Nick's communication and Sally's on-site help we felt like we were in good hands throughout.

Sally arranged for a local cook to prepare a meal for us the night we arrived and it was one of many highlights of our stay. Our group of six used the kitchen extensively. It is extremely well appointed and everything worked perfectly.

The property is in a quiet area just far enough from Bonnieux and with a view that is extraordinary. The other villages in the area are easily accessible. The interior decorations are beautiful and everything is well maintained, including the lawn, gardens and pool area.

We would highly recommend a stay at La Bastide.

PERFECT in every way!

  • 5 of 5

Our incomparable experience with La Bastide began on the internet, when we first contacted Nick. He was warm, helpful, and informative. He emailed us a handbook on the house and the Luberon that was better than any professional guidebook, and we consulted it constantly.

We were 6 people : my husband and I, brother and sister in law, and two adult children. From the moment we arrived we felt at home. Sally, the delightful and efficient house manager, was there to greet and show us around. She speaks English, which was a great help when we inadvertently clogged the kitchen sink.

La Bastide is large, elegant, and comfortable. It has a timeless feeling, from the fine linens to the ripe figs hanging over the garden wall. We cancelled all our restaurant reservations and spent evenings cooking together in the stone flagged kitchen, drinking Chateau La Canorgue wine and gazing out the large open window to the valley below. Simply perfect in every way.

We had Brigitte, a chef, in for two nights to teach us Provencal cooking. She had us all laughing and feeling fluent (was it the wine?) while all making aoli together. Such fun.

We recommend La Bastide without reservation and will be returning next year.
