Overview

About the property

Honaunau Beach House in South Kona, with safe swimming for the entire family

Experience old Hawaii in this beautiful, beach house; just yards from Honaunau Bay and 2 steps near the City of Refuge. Walk across the street and swim, dive or snorkel, arguably, the nicest bay on the island. Honaunau is great place to canoe, paddle board, kayak or scuba dive and we have a boat launch. Enjoy the warm water, tropical fish, green sea turtles, dolphins and more. There is no charge for this dolphin show or swim, the dolphins seem to enjoy performing for and around the snorkelers and we can watch them from the lanai! It's pretty amazing to see dolphins spinning in the wild.

Our home is centrally located in South Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Just 30 miles south of the airport and Kailua-Kona, out of the big city, but close enough to go for excursions. Volcano National Park is about 75 miles away and Hilo is just a little over 100. Captain Cook is 10 miles away and it offers, a variety of shopping, and dining options.

What a perfect romantic getaway for two, but it can accommodate more. The fully furnished kitchen has granite counters, a gas stove, a dishwasher and a full size refrigerator with an ice maker.

Enjoy the romantic, queen size canopy bed. Of course, the master bedroom has satellite TV available. The 2nd bedroom has ocean views, cool breezes and an office area with a tv to use as a monitor. There is a full bath house, toilet, bidet, sink & shower; in the yard with a variety of beach toys and a private back yard.

Enjoy tropical fruit from the yard, we have bananas, papayas, pineapples, coffee trees, tamarind and a turmeric garden with a few vegis mixed in

Pick up supplies as you come through Kona. This home is in such a great location that you might not want to drive anywhere. Maybe you would prefer to just relax on the lanai with a cocktail and watch the dolphins spinning in the bay and the sun set on the water. Take a stroll down to the white sand beach and let the children experience snorkeling in the safe, calm, shallow waters. Take a walk over to Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park, commonly known as the City of Refuge; and learn about the Hawaiian culture.

We were on a flight and Hawaiian Airlines played a video , Spotlight On the Big Island; highlighting the top things to do in Hawaii I was very excited to see the roof of our home in that video of Honaunau Bay. We know this is one of the best places on the islands and they obviously agree.

The bathhouse in the yard is stocked with snorkeling gear. It's great to walk back from the beach and shower outside, keeping the sand and water out of the house. We use solar power to energize this eco-friendly, green home.

This is a Hawaiian experience that even the locals want to enjoy.

Why Emely Wilson chose Hōnaunau

This is a rare find, where you can experience old Hawaii. This is one of the most special places in all of Hawaii, revered by the locals and tourists alike. Relax on the lanai and watch the dolphins swim and spin for the tourists. See whales as they pass by, often stopping to enjoy the deep outside the Refuge. Enjoy snorkeling Honaunau Bay, one of the nicest, safest beaches on the Big Island. It's great to be out of the big city, where you can just relax and enjoy what Hawaii has to offer. Warm, sunny mornings, cool ocean breezes, an abundance of song birds, tropical fruits and flowers, amazing sea life and water sports, beautiful sunsets, and romance.

I was very excited to see our roof on the "Spotlight of the Big Island" video that was shown on Hawaiian Airlines, seat back.

What makes this house unique

Location, location, location! It just doesn't get better then this. Walk across the street, over the sand and lava, to Two Steps, a naturally formed lava shelf that allows you to step down into the ocean and snorkel out with beautifully, colored tropical fish, eagle rays, dolphins, sea turtles and more. The slower you go the more you will see. There is a lovely, white sand beach that is perfect for children and those that prefer to keep there feet on the ground. This section of the bay is shallow and still filled with tropical fish and turtles.

Perfectly placed

  • 5 of 5

Amazing location, steps from the best snorkeling in the Big Island. Plenty of great local food within minutes. Super-duper comfy bed. Abundance of kitchen tools and condiments. Used the generator once for early coffee. Neighbors kids were a little loud, but not bad. Honaunau has become very popular, so many snorkelers, but always had the beach to myself at sunrise. Oh, look out for human eating mosquitos. The grounds could be better kept, the jungle was encroaching. Hate to give it a good review, I want to keep it secret!

Great place to stay!

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful location! Truly just step away from a fabulous snorkel beach. The house was roomy inside and out, and comfortable for 4 of us. Especially liked the outdoor bathroom and all the beach gear.

A beautiful place and a beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

This is a very special place and a very special home. It has been everything that I had hoped for in a vacation getaway to the Big Island; and more. The home is powered by solar (with a back-up generator). If you are conservative with running the various electrical devices, you won't ever need to run the generator. The home is very nicely appointed with tropical theme decor and the homeowner has her own original artwork on display. Beautiful! If you decide to come to Honaunau, you won't regret it!

Very satisfied with our decision to stay at your home during our vacation.

  • 4 of 5

The property was right on the bay so you could go snorkeling any time every day. Having a large assortment of snorkeling gear was a bonus. When you informed the islanders where you were staying they would mention it was one of their favorite places to go snorkeling/scuba diving. The house was large and spacious with plenty of fans to circulate air. Outside shower and bathroom was a plus. Washer and driver was convenient especially when staying for greater that one week. On the rare occasion when we wanted to watch TV we had difficulty with the Satellite/Netflix, but again who goes to Hawaii to watch TV. We are very satisfied with our decision to stay at your home during our vacation.

Comfortable, beautiful, relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay! We wanted a nice quiet location with easy access to snorkeling. We certainly got that! Beautiful view of the bay from the house. Out the door and 50 yards to the best snorkelling we have experienced. We did a lot of snorkeling and hiking on the trip and the house was a perfect place to access these things and relax and play games after our long tiring days. There were two couples on our trip and the house fit us very comfortably. The convenient availability of beach chairs, coolers, snorkeling equipment, towels, etc made the vacation that much more enjoyable. We did not use electricity for much other than smart nighttime lighting and fans, but did have power go out twice during the middle of the night. This was no inconvenience at night, and as soon as the sun came up the power went back on. We could have used the generator those two nights, but decided not to. The easy to read instructions would have made starting it an easy task. One suggestion: it would be helpful to include a basic understanding of how to read the solar display, and indicate at what point the power will turn off in the binder for the property. We figured it out (we think), and it truly did not affect us much, but was a question mark for us the first few days as we had never dealt with solar power before.

The house as noted in other posts is beautiful decorated, included books on Hawaiian fish, flowers, etc, and the park pass provided saved us money on a couple of our excursions (thanks for that).

In summary, thank you (mahalo) for providing us a really great place to stay. We all had a fantastic time, and would certainly look to stay here again if we make it back to the Big Island.

Location: Fabulous....Solar Power: Just a Little Challenging

  • 4 of 5

A lovely and very comfortable, well-appointed house for two couples, with plenty of off-road parking AND just a few steps from one of the best snorkeling beaches on the island and the City of Refuge National Park. Many mai-tai's were enjoyed while watching the sun set into the Pacific, and meals enjoyed on the back deck. (Plus, the second shower in the outside bath house was a huge plus.) The prefect place to simply unwind for a few days.

Once we were on the island and before we got to the house, we did have trouble connecting via the Homeaway App to get the entry code, etc. and ended up having to phone the owner....luckily, we were able to reach her by phone. So, I would recommend having a printed copy of all information before you leave home. (I heard this was not an uncommon problem....)

The solar system was also just a bit challenging......it is extremely warm down there by the ocean (with little breeze while we were there) and the electric fans are absolutely necessary to keep the inside temperature comfortable, especially at night. However, the fans seemed to drain the battery during the night and we did wake up without power a couple of mornings and remained without power until the sun seemed to charge things up again. The one morning we did have power.....we lost it when we turned on the electric coffee maker. There is a generator (noisy) for those occasions, so it is just a minor and temporary inconvenience...still, if you are expecting a flawless vacation, you might find this annoying. . . . .or amusing.

Would we stay there again? Yes. Would we recommend it to others? Yes. It's a charming, well-equipped place in a wonderful location. The minor inconveniences mentioned above are just that: minor. I only mention them to give folks a little heads up.

Owner's Response: We’re glad you enjoyed your stay. Sometimes living off grid is a little tricky, especially if it’s been cloudy or rainy during the day. Had we have known you were having trouble, we would have advised you to run the generator a while in the afternoon so that you would have plenty of power for the evening. Thanks again for staying in our home. Best wishes, Emely
