Overview

About the property

Honaunau Beach House in South Kona, with safe swimming for the entire family

Experience old Hawaii in this beautiful, beach house; just yards from Honaunau Bay and 2 steps near the City of Refuge. Walk across the street and swim, dive or snorkel, arguably, the nicest bay on the island. Honaunau is great place to canoe, paddle board, kayak or scuba dive and we have a boat launch. Enjoy the warm water, tropical fish, green sea turtles, dolphins and more. There is no charge for this dolphin show or swim, the dolphins seem to enjoy performing for and around the snorkelers and we can watch them from the lanai! It's pretty amazing to see dolphins spinning in the wild.

Our home is centrally located in South Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Just 30 miles south of the airport and Kailua-Kona, out of the big city, but close enough to go for excursions. Volcano National Park is about 75 miles away and Hilo is just a little over 100. Captain Cook is 10 miles away and it offers, a variety of shopping, and dining options.

What a perfect romantic getaway for two, but it can accommodate more. The fully furnished kitchen has granite counters, a gas stove, a dishwasher and a full size refrigerator with an ice maker.

Enjoy the romantic, queen size canopy bed. Of course, the master bedroom has satellite TV available. The 2nd bedroom has ocean views, cool breezes and an office area with a tv to use as a monitor. There is a full bath house, toilet, bidet, sink & shower; in the yard with a variety of beach toys and a private back yard.

Enjoy tropical fruit from the yard, we have bananas, papayas, pineapples, coffee trees, tamarind and a turmeric garden with a few vegis mixed in

Pick up supplies as you come through Kona. This home is in such a great location that you might not want to drive anywhere. Maybe you would prefer to just relax on the lanai with a cocktail and watch the dolphins spinning in the bay and the sun set on the water. Take a stroll down to the white sand beach and let the children experience snorkeling in the safe, calm, shallow waters. Take a walk over to Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park, commonly known as the City of Refuge; and learn about the Hawaiian culture.

We were on a flight and Hawaiian Airlines played a video , Spotlight On the Big Island; highlighting the top things to do in Hawaii I was very excited to see the roof of our home in that video of Honaunau Bay. We know this is one of the best places on the islands and they obviously agree.

The bathhouse in the yard is stocked with snorkeling gear. It's great to walk back from the beach and shower outside, keeping the sand and water out of the house. We use solar power to energize this eco-friendly, green home.

This is a Hawaiian experience that even the locals want to enjoy.

Why Emely Wilson chose Kona Coast

This is a rare find, where you can experience old Hawaii. This is one of the most special places in all of Hawaii, revered by the locals and tourists alike. Relax on the lanai and watch the dolphins swim and spin for the tourists. See whales as they pass by, often stopping to enjoy the deep outside the Refuge. Enjoy snorkeling Honaunau Bay, one of the nicest, safest beaches on the Big Island. It's great to be out of the big city, where you can just relax and enjoy what Hawaii has to offer. Warm, sunny mornings, cool ocean breezes, an abundance of song birds, tropical fruits and flowers, amazing sea life and water sports, beautiful sunsets, and romance.

This is our home, but we are willing to share this very special place with you while we are traveling for work or to visit family, and maybe we could schedule our trip around your schedule.

I was very excited to see our roof on the "Spotlight of the Big Island" video that was shown on Hawaiian Airlines, seat back.

What makes this house unique

Location, location, location! It just doesn't get better then this. Walk across the street, over the sand and lava, to Two Steps, a naturally formed lava shelf that allows you to step down into the ocean and snorkel out with beautifully, colored tropical fish, eagle rays, dolphins, sea turtles and more. The slower you go the more you will see. There is a lovely, white sand beach that is perfect for children and those that prefer to keep there feet on the ground. This section of the bay is shallow and still filled with tropical fish and turtles.

A lovely Big Island property!

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4 had an amazing week on the Big Island and booking our stay at this beautiful property only added to our enjoyment! The location to Two Step and The City of Refuge, including the view of both from the lanai were spectacular. Enjoying our Kona coffee out there in the morning was wonderful. A gentleman walking by one morning on his way to the beach complimented the house because it is so well kept and landscaped. The art and stained glass inside the home add a special touch. We did notice a National Parks Pass on our last day sitting with the keys by the lanai door. Assuming we could have used that if we noticed it earlier for Volcanoes National Park? We traveled all over the island during our stay. Day snorkel at Capt Cook, sunset manta snorkel with bonus dolphins, zip line over waterfalls, hiking the Kilauea Iki crater, and multiple snorkels at Two Step with our turtle friends, as well as time spent at Kikaua and Hapuna beaches. Pricing is very reasonable if not less than other places we have stayed. Deposit returned quickly. Very pleased. Note that we did not really cook meals during our stay. Also in regards to solar power, do not dry towels while making coffee and running the house fans. My husband fired up the generator and all worked fine after that. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

This is an wonderful house in an amazing Big Island location.

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here for four days during our recent vacation on the Big Island. What a delight! Beautiful property in a stunning location. We ate breakfast watching spinner dolphins from the porch, then walked a few steps to the bay to some of the best snorkeling of the Island. The nearby national monument "City of Refuge" was beautiful and fascinating. Couldn't ask for a more perfect place.

The house has everything you need, booking was easy and owners were easy to work with, even when VRBO messed up my email address. The kitchen cooking area is a little tight, but well stocked. Laundry on site was a plus. We brought a lot of our own snorkel gear, but this place has enough equipment for anyone who didn't! There is an full bathroom house outside which was a great addition for our family of five. All the kids loved to use that outdoor shower. The porches and house fans kept us comfortable.

Information on what to do with the garbage was a little confusing. We had to call the property manager for clarification. They answered right away and gave us the details we needed. If you're heading to the airport from this place, be sure to leave time to take your garbage and recycling to the dump.

We hope to be back to this amazing place!

Could the location be better?

  • 5 of 5

This home and it's location is amazing! So loved the little Gecko's and awakening to the birds every day. Staying beside the National Park to walk beautiful ancient trails each morning was amazing as well. The house was fully stocked and beautiful! We wanted for nothing. Thanks for the bananas right off the tree. The snorkeling is the best on the island right in front of the house. We loved that the house is off grid as we are minimalists as well and the house matched our style. The only issue we had was not enough instruction on how to start the generator so that would be a suggestion. We had experience at it but someone who didn't would not be able to! Thank you for sharing your little piece of heaven with us!

Owner's Response: We're sorry to hear the power went out during your stay. We rarely need to use the generator unless the weather is bad, blocking the sun. Lisa has written up new generator instructions for future guests. Best wishes, Randy & Emely

Evening Serenade

  • 3 of 5

Previous reviews are the reason I choose this home and I was not disappointed. The home is nicer inside than I expected, the porch/lanai is large and comfy with great view. It really is 2 minutes to walk to the beach area and the state park is interesting and beautiful with an old village and totems. Plenty of fish and turtles to watch in the bay, not too many people and a quiet neighborhood......except for the fabulous serenade of chirping critters outside. Didn't turn the TV or music on the first night, just laid there and listened to the song outside. The art inside the house is also very nice, I assume it is the work of the owner. I would stay there again. Enjoy!

Special vacation house. Great location. Well stocked, comfortable home.

  • 5 of 5

I've snorkeled in many places, and Honaunau Bay is among the best. Tons of fish. A few turtles. Twice while we were here, spinner dolphins came into the bay, once while we were in the water and able to swim with them. To be staying a couple of hundred feet away, and be able to return home to shower off and eat something after a snorkel was wonderful. Or to stroll down at sunset.

The house really is as nice as described. Clean, comfortable, homey, filled with artwork. The master bed is very comfortable (didn't use the other one, so I can't review). Well stocked, including lots of snorkeling equipment. Covered parking was a plus, with Hawaiian sun, too.

Completely off-grid solar powered, but never had any power issues (I mean, you need to be respectful of the situation and not waste electricity, but you don't need to be stingy). Internet works great.

The neighbors are also off grid, and use generators after sunset, but turn them off by ten.

Emely was great to deal with - friendly and responsive.

Location! Location! Location!

  • 5 of 5

Awesome location. The view of the bay from the front lanai is fantastic. While most visitors to the bay have to find parking on the street and walk back, all we had to do was just walk down our front lanai and 2 mins down the road. Plenty of water activities to do in the bay like snorkeling, kayaking etc. There is a part of the bay (near the boat launch ramp) which is shallower and calmer and thats where we did most of the snorkeling on account of us having two small kids. We saw plenty of super colorful fish and the turtles were the highlight.

The property is nicer than described. We made full use of the gas grill provided on the Lanai. The property manager was very easy to reach and very accomodating.
