About Nellie Bracker

I am a Native of this area. My grandparents moved here in 1923 from Brooklyn. Our clothing store, Brackers, still stands today. I have worked T the store most of my life with many "hats". I left the business 4 years ago to enter the Energy Efficiency arena. I sell Solar systems, both commercial and residential.

I have one son. Robby, 21 years old. Robby is a Junior at Chapman University in Orange California. He is studying Film Production and, thank goodness, is is healthy, works hard, and is quite happy.

My home has become what it is today over a 24 year metamorphosis. It is the ultimate expression of my art.

Nellie Bracker purchased this house in 1992

Why Nellie Bracker chose Tubac

I purchased this property for 3 reasons.

Firstly, it has a water well. I had the water tested and it is "of the purest water in the state of Arizona". It's so good, I never leave home without it !

Secondly, it is quiet. Sound carries in desert stillness. The hills in front of my property protect me from noise, completely. Therefore, it's like I am in the boonies yet I am a mile from town and 40 highway miles from anywhere in the world, a straight shot to the Tucson airport.

Finally, I felt my potential to create a habitat that I will love for the rest of my life, which I have accomplished.

What makes this house unique

My house is more "Custom" than custom. Handcrafted mesquite wood furniture and cabinets make up my living room, kitchen and dining table. I grew up acquainted with a Mesquite furniture maker here who decided to retire. I purchased his 12' slab inventory at his cost. His inventory had cured for years in his stock yard. I had no idea how rare they were, nor how expensive they had become. Luckily, I also adopted his right hand assistant, Abelino, an artist with decades of experience. In 5 months time he finished my kitchen, living room, dining table and bay window bench. Abelino utilized the scraps for my kitchen register/vent, step ladder and paper towel holder.

Fossils. The Tucson Gem and Mineral show in Tucson is the biggest show of it's kind in the USA. I came across fossils that are over a million years old. They cost $3.50 each. I bought 100 and used the ammonites for tile in the upstairs bathroom.

I have 3 life sized chairs; Aunt Gemima, Muscle Man, and Prima Ballerina. They are each carved out of a single piece of Mohagany, strong as iron and made to hold large adults. Each one is an animated work of art. How did I end up with them? I stored them for a dear friend who was moving on to a different stage in her life. Ultimately, to shield her from the memories of her old life, she wants me to care for them !

Every room, every piece of furniture, has a great story. I love my home and I know you will enjoy it.

A perfect southwestern retreat

  • 5 of 5

If you want a relaxing getaway in beautiful Arizona retreat, you can't go wrong staying at this lovely country home. Nestled in the hills on a private gravel road, this home was perfect for us. Eclectic art throughout the home made us feel like we were living in an art museum! The professionally-equipped kitchen made me feel like a gourmet restaurant chef. We spent hours on the charming patio surrounded by flowers by the relaxing fountain. Comfortable beds, spacious open concept design, with HUGE picture windows to welcome the sunrise - different every day. Nellie was a consummate host - stayed in touch to answer any questions, and made us feel like a welcome guest in her home. And needless to say, the Village of Tubac provided plenty of great restaurants, shops and galleries. It was hard to leave, and we know we'll be back. I would heartily recommend this place to anyone.

Disappointed

  • 3 of 5

This property has a really lovely peaceful outside seating area, which we enjoyed. We had problems with both main floor showers not draining . When we tried to plunge the shower in the master suite, it resulted in sewage backing up into the shower and not draining. Plumbers informed us this was not anything we had done, but a problem with the houses pipes. Nellie got right on it , but it took most of the day for it to be fixed. We were also a bit put off by maintenance workers at the house for quite long periods of time on three days during our stay. After these inconveniences Nellie back charged us for gluing of a wooden chair. This chair was not in pristine condition to begin with. :(

Peaceful, relaxing and spacious

  • 5 of 5

Loved staying at this artfully decorated home for a few days with some friends. Locations is perfect, so close to Tubac and Tumacacori for those that wanted to shop or sightsee, yet so comfortable and serene it was hard to leave the house. We’re planning for next year already!

Enjoyed our stay in sunny Tubac!

  • 4 of 5

Nellie ,

It was great meeting you and we enjoyed the use of your home. Everything we needed was there... especially in the kitchen and on the patio. Which is where we spent most of our time.

It was also nice that it was a just a short drive into town for golf, shopping and hikes.

  • 5 of 5

This house in Tubac is not only a home, but a work of art! Comfortable - with all the amenities, well-appointed construction, cool art and furnishings, and the setting is private and perfect for watching birds and butterflies. Delightful!! We were fortunate to meet our hostess, Nellie, who is a gem!! We will never stay anywhere else!

Owner's Response: Hi Carla, I am grateful for the eloquent and complementary depiction of your stay at my house. I could not have asked for a nicer review. The site does not allow a description of the guest, just a star rating. Clearly I awarded all stars available. Yours, Nellie

The "High Desert", 3600', affords a plethora of flora and fauna unlike the barren lowlands of Phoenix and Tucson. Right out my back door one can walk, run, hike, birdwatch, mountain/road bike. Desert flowers take their turn blooming year round. Popular here is bicycling; bicycle rental service delivers to the house. There are paths everywhere, many of which start right from my house. The topography here is relatively flat and more challenging routes exist as well (Bike map available). Tucson is 40 minutes away by auto. The Arizona/Sonora Desert Museum displays all local insects-to-snakes-to-mountain lions, and every cactus imaginable. Downtown Tucson has recently taken off with it's progressive and native food lively restaurants and our historical Hotel Congress. "Second Saturdays" downtown is a free outdoor event with live music and street-fun. An hour and a half away is Kartchner Caverns State Park. This should be the 8th "'Wonder of the World", a living cave 200,000 years old. (limited entrance and ticket should be purchased in advance). Mexico is 22 miles south of Tubac featuring well tended Historical Society Museum in Nogales. On both sides of the Nogales Border REAL Mexican restaurants are abundant. The best ones are inexpensive "Mom and Pop" small eateries. Nogales is an extremely safe border to cross for food and shopping. One block from the border into Mexico is the infamous La Roca Restaurant. The ambience, the service and the food are unparalleled and it is one of my favorite restaurants in the WORLD. There is a Bird Sanctuary in Patagonia, 20 miles from Tubac. There have been birds spotted in Patagonia that have never been seen anywhere else in the world. This area is a popular destination for birders from all over the world, as birds fly south for the winter and them head back through our mountains in the Spring.
