Great location, some nice amenties but house needs some updating.

  • 3 of 5

We had a great week at SML. Heron's Rest has some very nice things about it. The location was great. The outdoor furniture was comfortable. The yard was fenced in(except a small hole in the right corner which our dog found right away!). The mattresses were comfortable and bathrooms fine. The kitchen is new and very well equipped. The dining room table is large and was great for night time card games.

But the upstairs queen bedroom slants and it opens out to a top level deck that is a bit suspect with respect to safety. The deck and deck gutters have moss growing on them. We did not use it.

The furniture in the main living area is not comfortable. The sofa is old and sinks way down plus the leather is ripped on one side. Besides the sofa there are these odd chairs that again are old and need replacing. I would recommend the owners replace the living room furniture. In addition the master bedroom had a musty odor that should be looked into.

All in all it was a great week.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying... and for any comments, the home is one of the first homes built from the Peaks of Otter Stone, so as all and any homes over 50 or 60 years the home adjusts itself . Actually the home is extremely safe and so is the deck outside of the bedroom . Yes the moss build up each year- each year about this time we remove it, mother nature with the trees just does not want to cooperate and keep it they way we maintain it every fall... but then again that is the beauty of the lake, and this spot. Sorry about the hole in the fence- that occurs - our wild animals make some small homes now and then but we do ask you walk the fence and we do provide stones in the yard to move them, place them where ever you need them. Our dog does not dig- but we cannot control other animals. The furniture we will be re-evaluating this year- the couch is only a couple of years old... some sink lower, so we check the warranty on that one ... and the older chairs you refer to are our re-covered antiques / classic chairs... that belong to the family. They do sit alot straighter, but some enjoy that aspect. Thank you again for your comments, and look forward to having you back soon ..

Great location! Rental company should be doing a better job.

  • 3 of 5

The house was the perfect layout for 2 families of four. Kitchen was spacious, deck and dining room large enough for all of us. The issues we had were with the property as a whole versus the house.

1) We arrived to a full trash can (and no recycling) so you can imagine how much trash was piled up at the curb when we left!

2) Upon arrival, we immediately noticed the window in the foosball/laundry room had been smashed, then taped up instead of repaired...we didn't use that room.

3) Dozens of test strips for the hot tub had been thrown on the ground nearby.

4) The most anticipated part of the trip was hanging out on the dock with the party deck. There was a huge rusty nail sticking up on the walkway. The rental company said I should just "keep the children away from it." We tried to plug in a speaker at the dock-no power anywhere down there. This was more apparent when there were no working lights anywhere on the dock. Yes, we tried every switch both at the house and dock. The dock was completely unusable in the evening. To this, the rental company response was "you were told to bring a flashlight as part of the items to pack list."

We definitely enjoyed our time and love Smith Mountain Lake, but will not be renting this house again. We certainly won't be spending this kind of money on such poor service from Premier Vacation Rentals.

Owner's Response: We are sorry you did not enjoy our company. 1)First we have nothing to do with the trash service at Smith Mountain Lake- and no there is no recycling. You must drive to the dump, and put cans and more there. The owner pays for the trash pick up - which is only once a week here so again , nothing any can do for trash . 2) Yes that window just had a tree go thru it - literally - you arrived right behind a tornado had hit- the property was cleaned up as best it could be - the window was on order. The window is now replaced and installed - it was deemed safe for use- if taped , by the contractors. 3) Lights and power at the dock do work- you did not want anyone sent out- so we honored your request at that. 4) One nail on over 1500 sq feet of boards- yes again - when someone tried to come out- you declined them - not us 5) We had no idea on test strips - but will notify the hot-tub company thanks for staying and wish we could control tornadoes, , trash and every wish you have before you arrive, but some things are out of every agencies hands at any place.

Heron"s Rest

  • 5 of 5

Had a great stay. The weather was great. Enjoyed swimming in the lake and being able to enter from the beach (especially our dog). Loved sitting in the hot tub in the evening under the stars. We even saw deer in the yard. Had family with us who had never been to SML and they really enjoyed themselves.

Perfect summer get-a-way

  • 4 of 5

My friends and I had a great time staying at Heron's Rest. We enjoyed spending time on the dock and sitting on the deck. The only thing I would change if I could would be adding one more bathroom. Considering it was a girl's trip (6 of us) it would have been nice to have one more shower, but we survived. :)

Lovely location for a birthday celebration with a few suggestions for improvement

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time at Heron's Rest celebrating my dad's 80th birthday. The view, lake access and location were great. We enjoyed the hot tub and canoe and the house was comfortable for our group of 6. The fenced yard was contiguous with the deck and was perfect for our dog and the property felt very private. (We recommend a preventative treatment for ticks for your dog). The house layout was great for our purposes. There was a separate staircase for the master bedroom and bath so my parents had privacy from the rest of us louder folks.

The owners responded to emails and questions quickly and made good recommendations for activities.

We do have a few suggestions for the property manager

1.) provide a broom (and have the cleaning crew or lawn care workers sweep or blow off the deck). 2.) tone

down the warnings posted throughout the house that further charges could result from various infractions 3.) include life jackets on the list of owner-provided items, 4.) revise the refrigerator note containing the wifi password

- it is incorrect.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. Actually the property management company answered all the emails and communication and phone calls for you and addressed everything. Thank you for letting us know - the password is incorrect- it was correct a few weeks ago- so perhaps someone else changed it without us being aware. We will change it on the refrig. We will also let the owner know about the lawn care people that they hired- and pass on the information . The notes always start out very nice in every home - and eventually end up more strict - since the nice notes people said they were unaware they would be charged - so hence we disclose the charges that are established by the providers for the home if something is the tenants cause. However no one else has commented on this , and no issues have arisen after these have gone up - we will let the owner know as well. Thank you again for booking and Happy Birthday to your Dad again
