About Anita Owen

Our parents, Norris and Helen, bought the farm in 1972 to have a place for our family to get away, where we could work and play together. Our dad, Norris, grew up farming and he wanted us kids to have the farming experience. While we did not live on the farm growing up, we spent weekends and summer vacations there. Our parents retired to the farm in 1994 and we continued to enjoy the farm as a gathering place for our families as we grew up and had our own families. Our dad passed away in 2011 and mom has moved to be closer to family in Indianapolis. As the next generation, we are now managing the farm and we have turned our parents' home into a beautiful country retreat. Red Oaks truly is a a perfect place to unwind and disconnect from life. We also have extra space for small group meetings, board retreats, family reunions, all connected to the house by a covered porch.

Anita Owen purchased this house in 1972

Why Anita Owen chose Bloomfield

My father bought this property because it is so beautiful and full of history. We have active farming operations that include cattle and row crops. Besides the large rolling pastures and hills, we have a lot of woods and small ponds. Wildlife is everywhere on the farm--deer and wild turkey can be spotted every day somewhere on the farm.

The farm was homesteaded in 1816 by an Owen family and in the past 200 years, many different families have lived on the farm. The farm house, sitting on the highest point on the farm, is well over 100 years old, having been built when a school house and a blacksmith shop were rolled up to the top of the house on logs and put together to make the house. Two of our 3 barns are over 100 years old and our farm had the first apple orchard in the county. My parents built their retirement home, now the country retreat in the late 1980's and moved to the farm in 1994. We've enjoyed many family holidays and celebrations over the years at the farm.

The first burial in the county cemetery was Ephraim Owen in 1835 and the last was my father in 2011. There are 5 Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery and veterans from World War I and II.

What makes this house unique

We offer our guests the chance to get away and to refresh, restore and reconnect. We're unique in that we have dedicated space for group gatherings, the Boar's Nest, affectionately named for the wild boar hanging in the entryway. We use this space for family get togethers, business meetings, and retreats. You won't find similar meeting space anywhere in the local area, and the fact that you're on an active farm makes it that much more special!

Just what we needed.

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place to get away from the hectic day to day routine. The house and Boar's nest were just the ticket. We all gathered in the large kitchen/living area for breakfast most days. We sat on the large front deck and played games. We also had a lot of fun fishing in the pond.

We actually only left two times in our 7 day stay. What a great place to recharge the human batteries!!

Anita was very helpful and we are glad we got to stay a while on this

beautiful property.

Peace in the Country

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I came in from Texas for my HS reunion with Edgewood on one Saturday and a family reunion at McCormick's Creek State Park the next Saturday. With my dad in Spencer, the Red Oaks property near Worthington gave us the retreat we wanted in between the busy events.

The two bedroom comfortable farmhouse feels very spacious and is as neat as a pin. The kitchen has modern appliances and everything you'll need. Internet is good, tv has good channel selections and the sofas are comfortable. Beds are SUPER comfortable and every morning I did not want to get up! We saw 14 deer total in the area, lots of birds, squirrels and chipmunks. Woods are close and you can walk back to see ponds and pastureland. The front porch is great for listening to the birds and soaking in nature.

We also rented some days in the Boar's Nest next door for my husband to spread out his computer and papers to do work. The Boar's Nest space would also be ideal for business meetings or Day retreats.

Come here to to take a break. Step back to a slower pace. You can eat at diners in Worthington or buy from the market there. Spencer and Linton are close by, and Bloomington and IU are down the road. Communication with Anita is excellent and she will work to make your stay as great as possible. This is the escape you have been looking for.

Wonderful home in a beautiful setting!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time at Red Oaks. The place was just as described. The open floor plan made it nice for us all to hang out as a family and the large front porch was another spot we found ourselves spending a lot of time. The kitchen had everything we needed and more! Anita did a great job communicating with us and making us feel comfortable in the home. Our favorite thing about the home was the setting. We loved walking back to the pond and exploring the area. The home was convenient to town but far enough away that we really felt like we were away from it all. We are hoping to make it back here sometime in the future!!!

Perfect weekend in the country

  • 5 of 5

Perfect weekend in the country - we really enjoyed our stay on the farm. The house is remote but accessible, beautifully decorated, and had everything we needed for a couple of no stress, relaxing days. We sat on the front porch under the ceiling fan and reconnected –even though it was a hot weekend it was comfortable outside.Would most definitely stay here again! I bet it is even more beautiful in the fall :-)

The front porch is favorite gathering spot for our family and friends when we get together. And you're right--the most beautiful time of year for us is the fall. Every year the colors are bright and breathtaking! We hope you'll join us again soon!

Amazing Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My group wanted to get away from the grind of day to day life and when we drove up to this house, we knew that we had found a place that offered exactly what we wanted. It was quiet, remote, clean, and had many uses for the spaces that were provided. We rented the Boars Nest and were so happy to have the extra space available for us to spread out into. Overall, this is a place that we hope to be able to return to. You won't be disappointed!
