About the property

1 BR Fully Furnished Efficiency With Porch In South Brushy Mountains

The Little Schoolhouse is a cozy 1 bedroom rental that is part of a large farmhouse that housed Little Rock Community School in the 1920's, then served as a farmhouse, and more recently, has been renovated to reflect a warm environment that makes use of space by using comfortable antiques with modern conveniences. The property has recently been chosen as Mountain Tree of the Year for North Carolina. It is also part of a Stewardship Farm that has cultivated trees, ponds, trails, and gardens for wildlife and recreation. The owners are retired and live close by, as well as neighbors that share the larger part of the farmhouse.

The Little Schoolhouse is a clean and quiet get away in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. You can enjoy peace and quiet; read in the wing-backed chair, write a poem, or paint plein air style in the beautiful setting. Take a short walk and enjoy the reflection of the trees and clouds in the ponds or catch and release a nice bass or bream. Search for wild turkey feathers on your walk and then add them to the collection on top of the refrigerator. Pack a picnic lunch and hike on the old Burke Rd (preceded NC Highway 18) to the pergola at Broyhill Memorial Gardens.

Did you know that the name "Merlefest" was penned by a musician whose car broke down near an old country store in Boomer? She wrote a song called Boomer Breakdown for the next Merlefest. You can ride your bike to this store on backroads and then ride to Lackey's Country Market to try some of the local food. If you are here on the 3rd Saturday of the month, that local food includes spicy BBQ chicken sold at the Boomer Community Center. Food and musical festivals abound in our area and The Little Schoolhouse is a great place to stay while exploring or just listening to music from the porch swing. We are negotiable regarding longer term renting.

As part of a Stewardship property, the owners would also like to share in their love of gardening and bee-keeping and will occasionally offer special hands-on experiences. Comfort, simplicity and immersion in nature explain much of the appeal of The Little Schoolhouse.

About Martha and B Townes

We have been working for 30 years to develop our property into one of the first Stewardship Tree Farms in Wilkes County. In 2016 we were named NC Mountain Tree Farm of the year. When you visit us and stay in the Little Schoolhouse you will have access to our well landscaped property. Enjoy the diversity of plants while hiking around the ponds or stopping to pick vegetables from the garden. At selected times during the year visitors can participate in seasonal activities including gardening and beekeeping for an additional fee.

We are a retired couple who enjoy working on our farm and have backgrounds in horticulture, adult education, dental hygiene, and dental assisting. We are active volunteers in the community and enjoy traveling, reading, cooking, fishing, tennis, pickle ball, swimming, and hiking. We welcome you to The Little Schoolhouse

Martha and B Townes purchased this farmhouse in 1985

Why Martha and B Townes chose North Carolina

This property was a one room schoolhouse called Little Rock School in the early 1900's and was in Martha's family and became ours in 1985. At that time the fields were cow pastures and The Little Schoolhouse was serving as a hay shed. We evaluated whether to burn it down or keep it and renovate. B's dad examined the structure and found it to be soundly built with big timbers, fine workmanship and with an exterior design that depicted the utilization of one room schools into farmhouses. We most recently renovated to update the exterior siding and to accommodate the Little Schoolhouse as a vacation rental at the same time we renovated our own home to accommodate retirement desires. We lived in the Little Schoolhouse for nine months while our house project was completed. We loved the porch for devotions and coffee in the mornings because it faces east. Plants thrived in the landscaping and on the porch. The oven was big enough to cook in and the air conditioning and heat were very comfortable. The big pantry behind the kitchen was wonderful for storing everything and we entertained friends for dinner and cards often. We loved staying at the Little Schoolhouse and hope you will too!

What makes this farmhouse unique

When we married we both had a print of a local artist, Ward Nichols, called "A Country Walk," which at the time looked like a painting of our present property. Over the past 30 years we have gently changed the pastural setting to one of open areas between a wide diversity of forests and native wildflowers.

Two ponds totaling 4 acres provide opportunities for canoeing, fishing, painting, and picnicking.

Our property is centrally located in the Warrior Creek Valley between the South Little Brushy Mountains and the Yadkin River Valley to the North beyond Mars Mountain.

YMCA Camp Harrison, a 2,000 acre summer camp and retreat center is located 2 miles and is within walking or biking distance.

For nature lovers our property offers opportunities to commune and explore. Artists and photographers will find plenty of subject matter.

The physical space is defined by a comfortable bedroom with twin antique poster beds )which with prior request can be converted into one king) with new mattresses and linens. A big wing backed chair is a great for reading. The wardrobe serves as a closet (there were no closets in farmhouses) and was build for us by B's dad. The bathroom has a shower and shelves for extra sheets and towels which are provided. A large kitchen with lots of cabinets and drawers is equipped with washer and dryer and fully furnished. Behind the kitchen stove and sink is a nice pantry where the laundry supplies are stored. It is a great place to store groceries. There are two large windows, one in the bedroom with a nice privacy shade. The kitchen window faces the lean-to covering in the back which is a nice place to store bikes and beyond that a field that sprouts wild daffodils planted by the school children long ago. The spring that the children had to carry water to the school is down the hill from the Little Schoolhouse and that is the spring that feeds the smaller pond and it the headwater for Warrior Creek.

Great getaway locations!

  • 5 of 5

Booked a 5 week stay just to relax. Couldn't have made a better choice. Sarah had the place ready for us as Martha and B were traveling themselves for the first few days we were there. Clean, neat and comfortable. Fished the ponds regularly and walked every day. Abigail, our Golden Retriever, loved it. It was a beautiful stay. If you enjoy beautiful surroundings this is a great place. Because of Hurricane Irma we found that we needed to return home earlier than planned and B and Martha were extremely accommodating. Thank you both.

Quaint + Private Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We were in the area for a wedding and found this adorable apartment. It was perfect for us, with everything we needed for a calm, relaxing weekend. The home is fairly secluded at the end of a gravel road, which was great letting our dog, Bailey, run around. I spent most of our down time relaxing on the front porch swing and reading. Martha and B were the perfect hosts and we appreciated their ample hospitality. I highly recommend!

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

Unfortunately, we were only there for one night, and wished we could have stayed longer at this bee farm. The school house we rented was clean, quiet and had everything we needed. The property is beautiful with a couple of ponds, lots of flowers and butterflies. We really enjoyed our hikes around the property. The highlight of the stay was the education and hands on experience we received on the bees from "B". Martha also brought us delicious tomatoes and honey. We would highly recommend this secluded getaway and hope to return some day when we are in the area again.

Everything was as advertised or better, and our hosts were great. Our personal highlight was the fabulous beekeeping experience.
