About this property

Antique Cape In The Cape Cod National Seashore Park Near Gull Pond

The Locust House property consists of a main house (The Locust House), a separate small cottage (The Camp) and 2-plus acres situated within the Cape Cod National Seashore Park. The property is 2/10 of a mile (easy walk) to the public beach at Gull Pond. The property is also less than 2 miles from the National Seashore beaches and a short drive to Wellfleet center and harbor.

The Locust House can be rented on it's own or in conjunction with The Camp for additional guests (additional fee required). The combined houses offer a unique opportunity for guests to invite grandparents, family or friends to join them on vacation while having a private space of their own. The Camp, however, will not be rented without the Locust House in order to maintain the privacy of our main house guests.

The Locust House is a 2 bedroom (sleeps 6), 1 bath antique cape built in 1780. The house has an eat-in kitchen, a family room with HDTV, a living room, full bath with tub and shower and a bedroom with a queen bed all on the main floor. A narrow steep staircase leads to the recently added spacious 2nd floor bedroom with 4 twin beds. The house has a ductless a/c system that cools the upstairs and downstairs, but we doubt you’ll need it with the cool Wellfleet sea breeze. The property is perfect for active children or grandchildren to run around or a peaceful getaway for parents and grandparents alike.

The Camp is a 2 room (sleeps 4), 1 bath cottage which was recently renovated. The Camp has a kitchenette with sink, small refrigerator, stovetop, microwave and dining table for 4. It has a ½ bath and an outdoor shower off the bathroom. The Camp has a ductless a/c system that cools, but we doubt you’ll need it with the cool Wellfleet sea breeze. The house sleeps 4 with a queen bed in the main living area and 2 twin beds in the bedroom. It also has a large deck for outdoor dining or just sitting under the shade of the trees. An additional fee is required to rent The Camp.

The property consists of more than 2 acres of land and tall locust trees from which the house gets its name. Outside, you’ll find plenty of room to relax under the shade of the locust trees, dine outside at the picnic table or take a late afternoon nap in the hammock. If swimming, kayaking, fishing, paddle boarding or sailing is what you want, just grab your towel and take a short walk to beautiful Gull Pond. The public beach of Gull Pond has plenty of shady areas, and a large dock for jumping, sunbathing or the occasional cannon ball. The pond is a mile wide and connected to two other ponds; Higgins and Williams ponds.

The National Seashore beaches along the picturesque ocean view drive are only 1.6 miles from the house by bike or car. Oceanview drive is the home of four National Seashore beaches: Newcomb Hollow, Cahoon Hollow (home to The Beachcomber Restaurant), White Crest and Maguire’s Landing. All beaches offer great boogie boarding, surfing, swimming, sunbathing and long walks.

If it’s shopping or dining you prefer, Wellfleet center is only a 2 mile drive from the house. Wellfleet center offers many art galleries and restaurants as well as clothing and ice cream shops. Continue another mile and you’ll be on the Wellfleet harbor pier with more dining, shopping and ice cream options as well as outdoor square dancing each week.
Visit the Locust House soon and enjoy all that the town of Wellfleet and Cape Cod have to offer!

We keep coming back!
This summer 2023 marks the sixth or seventh time we have stayed at this small, wonderfully located compound. Having a second space to spread into insures different kinds of experiences for family and friends of different ages, interests, and needs. Its proximity to both a wonderful swimming pond and the ocean is unbeatable. Also close to town for myriad purposes. We've already reserved for another stay in 2024. Need I say more?

The Camp and Main House Wellfleet
We really enjoyed our stay at the camp and main house. The camp was perfect for my husband and I and our 2 year old. Grandma and Grandpa stayed in the main house and family visited comfortably for a night, staying in the upstairs bedroom which is especially ideal for kids. The staircase is steep so this room is best for little ones or guests who do not need access to the restroom downstairs at night. The location is really quaint and we loved access to Gull Pond, short driving distance to Newcomb Beach and close access to the Beachcomer! The only challenge was the fridge was not working and the hosts were unable to get it fixed or replaced during our stay. The hosts were communicative and did try to remedy the situation with the fridge despite not being able to replace it while we were there. If the fridge is fixed or replaced I would recommend this home without hesitation!

5th generation owners, spent many summers here as kids and now spend every summer with our own kids

Why they chose this property

The 3rd Great Grandfather to the current generation of owners purchased this 2 acre parcel of land with the Locust house, in 1889 for $100. No electricity, heat or running water was available in the Locust until the mid 1920’s. Since originally purchased in 1889, The Locust has been rented, used as a family summer home and lived in year round by various generations.

What makes this property unique

Unique antique cape with history, charm and prime location.

The Locust house is a 243 year old house, built mainly from shipwreck timbers and siding collected at the oceans beaches or “back shore”. The house was built in two segments. The shed, kitchen and tv room were built in 1780 and the living room and bedrooms were added in 1837. In 2015 the 1837 portion of the second floor was removed and a new second floor with dormers and air conditioning was added. The driveway of The Locust was actually part of the “Kings Highway” between Boston and Provincetown. The Locust served as a general store (in the present TV room) and was also used as a rest stop for the two-day stagecoach journey from Boston.

The name “The Locust” came from the many locust trees on the property that were salvaged from the English vessel “Franklin” shipwrecked in 1848 with a cargo of nursery stock bound for Boston.
