HOW THE RANCH CAME TO BE
The Ranch Is a desert retreat on 60 acres designed and built by
artist/builder Randy Polumbo in Joshua Tree, California. He calls the property "Spikehorn" Ranch, named in honor of his great-great uncle, John “Spikehorn” Meyer, Randy hopes Uncle Spikehorn would be proud of what he has built on his hill in the ruggedly beautiful high desert. Spikehorn was a colorful and brilliant character gifted in showmanship, “bear whispering,” and creating low brow architectural spaces as well as inventions. His sprawling rustic enclave was devoted to bear handling and appreciation, story telling, and other magical and enchanting pursuits. Today's Spikehorn is the perfect family retreat.
The Lodge (Main House) is made of a tumbledown squatters cabin expanded to a meeting hall/lodge/ and dining room for up to 16 people (Great Room & Living Room). This property features exposed framing, maybe six houses worth of vintage steel casement windows, a commercial kitchen, two indoor fireplaces, and three bathrooms.
Honeymoon Hideout (Guest House): This former collapsing garage is now a
lighthearted aerie love nest ideal to hole up with someone special. Enjoy the giant
soaking tub with 360 degree views, the discreet “mile high” privy tucked behind an airplane wing that rolls open, the wood stove, and three old school tire swings (with modern upholstery) Special details include an 8’ chandelier made of vintage bottles on two french bottle racks lit with delicately gelled LEDs by Polumbo Studio and one resident art project. There is extra sleeping on the 2nd FL daybed, and the queen pull out on the first floor.
This is a family retreat, there are no parties, loud music, fraternity type gatherings, business retreats. The county nuisance/noise code forbids loud music at anytime, and there is a 10 PM curfew forbidding any noise (music/party voices) that can be heard outside the house at that time. There is no hiking or climbing anywhere outside the ranch borders, as all the hills and fields are privately owned. We are 4 miles from the entrance of the national park with many choices for hiking and climbing.
