High-end, Restored Villa, 6 Bedrooms, 4.5 Baths, (Sleeps 12)
- english, french, Dutch
As the proud owners of “Les Volets Bleus” we purchased and upgraded/renovated the property in June 2005 and again in 2016. Although our home is in California, we have traveled a great deal in western Europe and have rented many properties – some great, and some less than spectacular! We always appreciated cleanliness, comfort, good beds, furniture you could actually sit on, great linens and towels, appliances that really worked, and nice big wine glasses! After buying our dream French farmhouse, our philosophy hasn’t changed - and we have upgraded the standard of the house to meet or exceed the best we’ve seen. Basically, we have designed it to be the way we’d like it if we arrived tired and hungry from across the world. READ REVIEW on our website.
Janice purchased this Farmhouse in 2005
Why Janice chose Trémolat
We found this beautiful area in 2003 when we took cooking classes in the area - and were amazed by the gentleness of the region: gentle food, gentle geography, gentle people. In addition, it's really how you hope life will be when you head to rural France. Most of our guests are shocked that a place like this REALLY exists! We looked at other countries, and considered other areas of France, but we pinch ourselves routinely at how fortnate we were to find villages like Tremolat, Le Bugue, Limeuil, Ste Alvere, Paunat and a place like the Dordogne. We bought the house in 2005 and have never been happier. In addition, we're 15 minutes walk into Tremolat and 15 minutes drive from Le Bugue and Lalinde, so the easy access from Bordeaux and all the area is a plus. We've never met more welcoming and agreeable people in all our travels, and have never enjoyed food and wine like we do when at 'Les Volets Bleus'! We just love visiting our Farmhouse whenever we can. Rather than finding a holiday home, we've found a life.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The most commented on benefit about staying at our property is the number and quality of double beds, the wonderful linens and cleanliness of the house. We feel that when you're on vacation, you should sleep as well as possible, and so we spared no expense in finding and furnishing really good, queen-size beds in our home. We furnish them with Indian-cotton linens and great pillows - accompanied by soft, fluffy white towels. Others warned us that putting in 4 double bedrooms (and 2 singles) would be a mistake since you 'get more guests per room' if you put everyone in singles beds - but we disagreed! As a married couple, we LIKE to sleep together in a good bed when in vacation, so squashing together 2 tiny single beds is not our idea of fun! So at 'Les Volets Bleus' at least 4 couples get to sleep in a 'master' bedroom... rather than having one nice bedroom and then all the late-comers getting the dark rooms with single beds! Not my idea of fun either! In addition, we run our home like a boutique hotel with all the cleanliness, perks and amenities you'd expect at an upmarket location. We have an expert cleaning and prep team who go through the house with a fine-tooth comb... and it shows! So you can rest-assured that you will be sinking into beautiful, white, Indian-cotton sheets, and a bed that will give you the rest you deserve...and all in a house that meets the top standards for cleanliness. In terms of the outdoors, our guests also love all the terraces to sit outside on, and appreciate all the chairs and tables on each terrace, including all the pool chairs and towels. In addition, the beautifully clean, large pool (fenced to all highest EU regulations) is a winner with families of all ages in the summer. The proximity to all popular locations (being half-way between Bergerac and Sarlat) is also a definite plus, and our guests enjoy all the area has to offer, and not having to drive for hours to take part in it!

Everything that we dreamed of.
It's hard to add much to all the great reviews this property has already received and has well deserved. At the risk of repetition, it met all our needs in every way and helped make a three-generation family trip into an unforgettable experience for all of us,
Location. Location, Location. Tremolat is one of the Dordogne area's prettiest small towns. One of us made the five minute drive in every morning to pick up bread and croissants from the Boulangerie. We had dinner in the town square one evening, and on Tuesday mornings, there's a market in the square. The house itself is on an extremely quiet country road, but within relatively short drives in one direction or another to Les Ezies, Sarlat, Beynac, Domme, Monpazier, Roque de Gageac, and dozens of other wonderful places worth exploring, And don’t forget the night markets where you bring your own silverware and beverages (or buy the local wine), choose from a variety of food at the different stands ranging from oysters to foie gras to Asian summer roles, then sit at community picnic tables, and sit back and enjoy the local scene and music…..we liked the low key and mellow Audrix and the happening Beaumont markets the best.
The house is as described in the listing but better in every way. A large family, or group of families or couples can divide up in a variety of ways. We ended up with three couples and a nine-year-old child in the main house, and with four twenty-somethings in the attached “barn” where they could party as late as they wanted without bothering us, and party they did helped by lots of inexpensive local wine. The thick stone walls keep the house cool and comfortable even when it is sweltering outside. Note: even when the temperature was in the high eighties during the day, it fell into the low sixties at night.
And Janice, the owner? What can I say? She was responsive and helpful from our first inquiries to the day we left. She answered every question. She gave us some great recommendations for things to do and places to eat. She had the house prepared and ready for us in perfect order. She brought over some wine, cheese, bread, and coffee, to give us a start. She arranged for Yanick to cook an unforgettable meal for us in his next-door garden with his donkey, and cat, his geese, and Nineve, his dog, for company. Somehow, we were instant friends with her, and will no doubt see her again.
From the moment we came upon the listing we knew that all would be wonderful.
A three generation family of four children (15 to 8 years) and six adults
The Dordogne can be very hot, this summer whilst we were there it reached 40 degrees C but the combination of air-con and fans enabled everyone to sleep untroubled and eat in comfort. The pool is a generous size and the many aquatic toys and other games (darts, table tennis and boule) occupied the children when they were not on line. Three large tables (two outside on different sides of the house) enabled us to eat our meals in the most suitable location. The house is in a very quiet position surrounded by deciduous woodland, within easy walking distance of Tremolat and a short car journey from supermarkets. We have no negative points about the house, contents, location and the owners attention to making our stay enjoyable. A neighbour and friend of the owner cooked us a meal on our final night; it was excellent value and both the adults and the children some of whom make an art form out of being choosy, all agreed this to be the highlight of this or any other of our many summer stays.
Beautiful house and gardens with fabulous pool
We had a wonderful two week family holiday at Le Volets Bleu. We had a very warm welcome from Janice and she went out of her way to make sure all our needs were met. Couldn’t ask for a more caring host. The pool was a god send in the hot weather, as was the air conditioning in the bedrooms! The three generations all thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we loved exploring the beautiful Dordogne.
Beautiful home, lovely setting and a magical holiday
We (a group of 10, spanning three generations) spent a magical week at this beautiful farmhouse.
The house is split into two units (house and barn) and with four teens in our party, this worked really well. We thoroughly enjoyed the large pool, and the large garden allowed us to eat together in the sunshine or shade throughout the day/evening.
The bedrooms are all nicely appointed and we were all comfortable, and the main kitchen was big enough to accommodate all of us.
We enjoyed many homemade meals as the cooking facilities, including two BBQs, are truly excellent. The gas BBQ was the best I've used and we took full advantage.
The farmhouse is in a beautiful setting with no light pollution. As a result, the stars at night are simply breathtaking. Most nights we ended up lying on the sun loungers with a glass of Montbazillac, taking in the Milky Way. Unforgettable!
Another special memory was our next door neighbour, Yanick, cooking a typical Perigourdine dinner for us. The meal was amazing, the cost reasonable and the evening was great fun.
Finally, my definition of a perfect host(ess) is someone who is welcoming, friendly, very knowledgeable of the area, who is there to help without being intrusive. Janice was exactly this...her recommendations were all perfect, from the hot air balloon ride (truly worth every Euro) to the local restaurants and, of course, Yanick. She helped make our holiday one of our very best.
Our only regret was that we didn't stay for longer!
Wonderful three generation family holiday
Les Volets bleus is just as described on the website, a dream country farmhouse with lovely grounds and a great swimming pool. Our family group of 12, covering three generations, had a wonderful week here in August 2017. The accommodation is very comfortable, attractive and the beds all luxurious. Everything was very clean, there is a very good range of kitchen equipment for cooking for 12, and a delightful choice of outside tables for eating on the different terraces during the day and in the evening. The location is quiet and scenic: it is a lovely 20 minute walk in the morning down to Tremolat to the boulangerie and a short walk past the oak plantations (this is land of truffles!) to look down on the Dordogne. Tremolat is very pretty and its restaurants widely well known- with justification.Kayaking on the Dordogne is to be recommended. Janice, the owner, was really helpful and welcoming before and during our visit and all in all this was a wonderful holiday in a lovely, comfortable farmhouse.
Perfect family house
Really well equipped. Plenty of space for 6 adults 6 children and large grounds for our 2 dogs. Swimming pool is huge with a good deep end All in all it could not have been better
