Villa in Monchique, Western Algarve, Portugal - Fresh, Pure Mountain Air. Beautiful Gardens. Absolute Tranquility.

The “A Casinha” estate was purchased in 1969, a secluded valley of 12 acres on the steep southern slope of Fóia Mountain, only a 10 minute drive west from the village of Monchique. Other than a ruined farmhouse, a fig tree and a series of abandoned terraces sloping down to a boundary stream, the property was a wilderness containing nothing other than fantastic views from all points down to a broad stretch of Portugal’s southern Atlantic coast some 12 miles distant.

Over the following 43 years, much of the property has been cleared and planted with a wide variety of trees and shrubs, sweet chestnuts, oleanders, magnolias, and fruit trees, to name a few. An extensive network of gardens and pathways were created between the three villas built in the early 1970’s. The building sites were carefully chosen for their unique locations and views to the coast, distant enough from each other to assure their seclusion and privacy, and each with its own entry road, car park and independent amenities.

The first villa built, the largest of the three, is located near the mid-level of the valley. Quite far up the slope stands the second, and smaller villa. Full time residents presently live in these two villas. The third villa and the newest of the three is ‘Casa da Menina’, your holiday home.

‘Casa da Menina’ is the southernmost villa and lies further down the valley and to the east. It was designed and built specially for summer rental. Nestled among chestnuts, oleanders, shrubs and flowers, its view faces the south and southwest coastline. Its style is typically rustic Portuguese, simple and comfortable. The front patio, living-dining room and the two double bedrooms all have a southern view. The patio dining table is sheltered under a vine covered arbour and there is ample exposed space for deck chairs and sunbeds.

At 2200 feet altitude, the sun is hot but the air is dry, free of insects and cool in the shade. Most nights you may need a light blanket. After dark, the distant lights twinkling from the coast and the pure starry sky will keep you on the terrace long after bedtime.

From your villa, the swimming pool sits further up at a higher level with a choice of two terraced garden paths each with some steps leading you to it. While the pool is also available to the year-round residents, it is reserved for the exclusive use and enjoyment of ‘Casa da Menina’ guests every day from 9 am to 7 pm.

Guests of ‘Casa da Menina’ can feel free to wander through and enjoy all gardens of the ‘A Casinha’ estate.

Our villa is about 5 minutes drive from the nearest restaurants, where you can enjoy typical local food, exquisite pastries and desserts. Some of the most popular dishes are the roasted chicken ‘piri-piri’, wild boar, black suckling pig, and eels stew.

Upon entering the village of Monchique there is a good, large supermarket (Intermarché) on the left-hand side, at the very first round-about for all your needs.

From our property to the village of Monchique it's about 10 minutes drive. It is fun to stroll around the village and stop for a light snack at lunchtime soaking up the lovely atmosphere of Monchique. There are numerous cafés and pastry shops (pastelarias) that serve delicious, mouthwatering cakes.

Monchique offers total relaxation, with spectacular scenery, plenty of places to walk and explore.

Why Eulalia Inacio chose Algarve

While living in Lisbon, they decided to invest in property near the village of Monchique and discovered an entire valley facing the southern coast. It was so beautiful they felt it could mean more to their lives than just a financial investment. The 12 acres had nothing but an abandoned ruin and a fig tree. With imagination the ruin was turned into a summer residence for their growing family. Soon after it was finished, a swimming pool and two other villas were built, all the while thoughtfully preserving the seclusion of each dwelling. These two other houses now have full time residents.

Over the years, Penny and Richard have planted fruit trees and flowering bushes with terraced gardens and paths where one can wander and relax. The three villas comprise the 'A Casinha' estate.

Notes on accommodation: Your holiday home, 'Casa da Menina', is a rustic villa with tiled roof and floors of fired clay, and is comfortably and charmingly furnished with country antiques. All doors and windows have shutters for coolness and privacy. Outside: The broad south facing terrace has sunbeds, assorted garden furniture, and portable barbecue. The outside dining table is sheltered under a vine-covered arbour. Stairs and pathways wind up through terraced gardens to the pool. In the shade of a large magnolia tree you can doze over the book you have long intended to read. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, beach towels and linen included. Linen changed weekly. Nearby Restaurants:~ Your holiday villa is about 5 minutes drive from the closest restaurants, where you can enjoy typical local food, exquisite pastries and desserts. Both south and west coast destinations can be reached from the villa within 30-40 minutes drive. The roads are well paved and easy to reach. The beaches on the southern coast are calm and inviting, especially to children. Water sports, snorkeling and boat trips can be enjoyed by the whole family.

On the western coast the Atlantic ocean is wilder and a true haven for surfing, with wider beaches. Its sunsets not to be missed.

On both coasts the sand is fine and soft.


Faro airport via through way to the Portimao/Monchique Exit takes 45 minutes, plus another 30 minutes up to Monchique and on to your holiday home. Car hire is essential. Directions will be provided.

The 'A Casinha' estate is situated within a National Park Reserve covering the upper part of the Foia mountain range (highest peak 901 metres). In the bustling market village of Monchique you can find almost everything for your daily needs: One large supermarket (Intermarché), open 7 days a week. Other small markets. Post office. Banking facilities; cash points. Pharmacy. Pastry shops. Tourist shops. Foreign papers.

Monchique has a library containing English books and photocopier, free Wi-Fi sites and a Medical Center.

Inexpensive local area restaurants offer many interesting regional treats including grilled sardines, barbecued chicken, air-cured ham, marzipan sweets, and much more.

From Casa da Menina, a scenic network of paved country roads, empty of traffic, takes you in many directions: Southeast to Silves with a medieval castle, restaurants, museums, other attractions; to the south coast for its calm beaches, sailing, sightseeing boat trips, golfing, water parks, and, if you don't mind cooler water, to the rugged unspoiled west coast with its spectacular ocean beaches and fish restaurants. A favourite of ours is Praia das Amoreiras: White sand, life guards, a restaurant good for a snack or more elaborate meal, and for children, an inlet with a quiet lagoon and warmer water.
