EcoTourism In Tuscany Secluded 4Bed Organic Farmhouse, Own Pool In Lovely Area

Bedrooms 4
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Organic Farmhouse in Roccalbegna, Grosseto, Maremma, Monte Amiata, Tuscany, Italy - Undiscovered Tuscany, Flowers, Butterflies, Wildlife - Yet 45 Mins Beach.

Roccalbegna is a tiny unspoiled medieval town in the Maremma hills, close to thermal spa of Saturnia with new 18-hole golf course. The surrounding countryside is stunning, "underdeveloped" meaning wild and lovely, with rock faces above Roccalbegna plunging down into the Albegna valley below. Bellavista is a typical stone farmhouse set in its own organic fields, recently restored using traditional materials. It is 10km from Roccalbegna, making it secluded, yet easily accessible via a 400 metre private drive. It has four good-sized double bedrooms, each equipped with either bathroom or shower room, one of which is downstairs. The big farmhouse kitchen leads into a cosy living room with open fireplace, as well as opening on to a large veranda complete with tables and chairs for 8. The huge garden has a 6x12m pool, a hand-built barbecue, and merges into the surrounding fields. You can watch deer, may catch sight of boar or porcupine, as well as rare and interesting birds, butterflies, frogs...

Fantastic for birds and wildlife, you can expect great food, great wine, great countryside for riding, cycling, walking yet easy reach of beaches and cities. Cookery classes, olive oil and wine tasting available by arrangement. Easy day-trip distance from Rome, Florence, Lucca. Siena, Pienza and Montalcino are even closer. Bellavista is a peaceful spot to relax and listen to nightingales, scops owls. Being in one of the least light-polluted areas of Italy you get a rare view of the night sky and can look forward to some lovely shooting stars.

My other half and I live 5 minutes away and will be on hand for anything you need, as well as coming twice a week to do the pool maintenance. We will be happy to share the produce from our vegetable garden and fruit trees with you, and you can help yourselves to the herbs and fruit growing at Bellavista.

*** For security purposes I strongly suggest we speak on the phone before making any payments. ***

About Arabella Rodriguez

Hi, I'm half English and half Italian and used to be a sound engineer in London until I moved here in 2004. I'm now an organic farmer, I grow saffron on another little farm near here as well as spelt at Bellavista. I live with my Italian partner nearby, (we came here in the same year and met here), and we can be around to help you settle in and tell you about things to see and do.

Arabella Rodriguez purchased this farmhouse in 2004

Why Arabella Rodriguez chose Grosseto Region

I've absolutely fallen in love with this place, I've never been anywhere where the wildlife is so rich, and it's great to sit outside at night and listen to nightingales and crickets and watch the shooting stars. The "locals are friendly", and the area has also become home to numerous funky types dotted around in the hills, so it's never boring, even in winter. It's easy to get to Rome to see family, the sea is less than an hour away, it's strategically placed for all the major cities in central Italy, yet it's unspoilt and utterly beautiful.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Benefits? lots - peace and quiet, clean air, wonderful nature, plus all the mod cons (pool, bbq, Sky TV), the Etruscan plain (Pitigliano, Sorano, Sovana), unspoilt medieval towns, fantastic countryside.

Villa "Podere Bellavista, Roccalbegna"

Review Submitted: 30 January 2012 Date of Stay: October 2011

An outstanding villa set in the stunning hills of Tuscany. Great facilities and beautifully presented throughout. The owners were lovely and so welcoming and helpful. Ideal base for trips to Rome, Florence and Siena and it was just lovely to come back to Bellavista, open a bottle of wine and watch the breathtaking sunset in pure peace and tranquility. There is also a lovely swimming pool for lazy relaxing days in and the children loved exploring the grounds and spotting the different birds and wildlife. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to friends and relatives and probably the best recommendation of all is that we can't wait to go back!

Beautifully tranquil Italian farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We needed a relaxing holiday away from it all and this was it - just perfect. Very quiet, in beautiful country, with a great pool and bbq and great facilities of internet (intermittent but enough for us with 2 early teen children), music, the odd DVD (maybe take your own) and card games. Only 2.5 hours from Rome by car, and only 50 minutes to the most amazing beach in a nature reserve, or just over an hour to Siena and other beautiful towns worth visiting. Arabella couldn't have helped us more with booking it and with helpful information. The perfect hideaway.

A fantastic, comfortable and well equipped villa in the Tuscan countryside

  • 5 of 5

The villa is situated in a very rural setting well off the road with only the sound of occasional farming from neighbours to be heard. Arabella met us at the nearest village and waited whilst we bought a few groceries at the local shop, and then escorted us to Bella Vista.

Initially the villa seems a long way from anywhere (which is one of its many attractions), but once you are familiar with the winding and undulating roads, you tend to measure travelling in time rather than distances. The kitchen has all the amenities that you need to create some interesting Italian dishes, but there are many excellent Trattorias and Pizzarias in local villages and towns, and we were welcomed very warmly by them all.

We went to the beach at Marina di Grosseto one day, and Siena another. Both are well worth a visit and don't miss the surrounding villages and towns.

The weather at the end of August could not have been better - with clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine, so the large swimming pool was most welcome.

The owners Arabella and her husband Pier Luigi are the most congenial and friendly hosts and nothing was too much trouble. Help is only a phone call away should you need advice. We had only 1 week at Bella Vista and it was with sadness that we had to bid farewell to the villa and the friendship of Arabella and her husband.

Vert quiet and restful!

We have just returned from a week's stay and had a marvellous time. If you are looking for somewhere to relax and unwind, this is the place for you. The house is well equipped, the swimming pool spot on and Arabella was available to provide help and advice when needed.

A very special place...

  • 5 of 5

Our group of six ranged from 10 to 80 years of age and all three generations had the most wonderful time! The house is beautifully appointed inside and out, the garden an ideal mix of landscaped areas with a touch of wilderness and the view of the valley perfect for sunsets and misty mornings. We wish we'd been able to use the pool every day but the weather was mixed. Instead we explored Roccalbegna and the nature reserves of Monte Labbro (amazing views) and Pescinello, abundant with wild flowers. We also spent a day in Siena and soaked in the hot springs of Saturnia which is a scenic drive away. Arabella gave us the warmest of welcomes and we sampled some of the saffron she grows in a delicious risotto. She gave us useful local information and as we left for Rome airport, recommended we stop at Sovana for some Etruscan-style pottery - we were not disappointed! Thank you Arabella and Pier Luigi for an amazing stay!

Fantastic Rustic House and Property

  • 5 of 5

My spouse and I rented Bellavista and had a fantastic time. The house was exactly as described in the listing and immaculately well maintained. The owner was also incredibly helpful and on more than one occasion went out of her way to help arrange plans for us - which was very helpful given our limited Italian.

The location itself is well-situated, around 45 minutes to an hour driving to all of the sites in the area: Grosseto, Saturnia, Val D'Orcia, etc. A car is an absolute must and one with all-wheel drive or a high clearance is advisable due to the dirt roads in the area. I suggest that unless you are familiar with the area that you locate some necessities, such as grocery stores ahead of time, as many can be quite a drive (although there is a local hardware store/ferramenta that sells staples in Santa Caterina). For those interested in local wildlife and hiking there is a WWF park in the area (Bosco Rocconi) and the regional park in Alberese: both well-known for (migratory) birds.

We would absolutely stay again and our only regret is that we could not take advantage of the gorgeous pool due to low April temps.

Owner's Response: Dear Ryan and Anna, we very much enjoyed your visit and look forward to the next one - perhaps when it's warmer and you can scuba-dive off the Argentario (I imagine the submerged Roman villa is still there). We'll have a warm welcome for you (either inside or out!) for your next visit. Meanwhile, all the best, Arabella and Pier Luigi

A peaceful way to spend a holiday

  • 4 of 5

Charming and rustic. Everything you need for a home away from home holiday. We didn't want close neighbours and we didn't have. We visited Florence and Sienna and Saturian. Not a lot of traffic which was great. Arabella was attentive, caring and very helpful. We hope to visit again one day.

Special interest holidays:

Birding, cookery courses, olive oil and wine tasting are available by arrangement. The area offers some lovely walks among the various nature reserves and along many traditional "white roads". The director of the WWF reserve at Rocconi would be glad to take you round. Being an organic farm in an "underdeveloped" location, Bellavista provides a rare opportunity to experience both a rich natural environment and, being located in one of the least light-polluted areas of Italy, a wonderful view of the night sky, Milky Way, and shooting stars.

45 mins driving to sought-after Monte Argentario (Gianella and Feniglia, part of Feniglia is equipped with restaurant and sunbeds etc.) also Alberese, Castiglione della Pescaia, Torba, Osa, and many others. Ferry from Porto Santo Stefano (Monte Argentario) to islands of Giglio and Giannutri, or from Piombino to Elba. Or hire a dinghy from Porto Santo Stefano and chug round the beautiful coast!

Pisa and Rome airports are both two and a half hours away by car, trains connect both to Grosseto. A car is essential.

Nearest village 5km, lovely Roccalbegna (restaurant, groceries, butcher, chemist, bank) 9km. Grosseto (renaissance city centre, shopping) 45km, Pitigliano (Etruscan ruins, old Jewish quarter, beautiful renaissance city) 50km, Siena and Montepulciano 70km, Montalcino (wine and honey) and Pienza (art and cheese) 60km. Major cities Florence, Pisa, Rome 2 1/2 hours.

A must for birders and nature lovers, this uncontaminated oasis has been spared the intrusions of modern farming and intense tourism and is home to an unusual number of rare birds (Lanner, Short-Toed Eagle and many others) and plants. Bird visitors include skops, tawny, screech and barn owls, nightingales, stone curlews, hoopoes, common and honey buzzards, bee-eaters, wall creepers, peregrine falcons, kestrels, sparrow hawks, goshawks, while on the ground you may see porcupine, deer, hare, boar, martens, foxes, badgers.

That said, Podere Bellavista is strategically placed for day-trips to central Italy's great attractions - Florence, Rome, Siena etc. are in easy reach, as is the sea.

Great local restaurants include Il Cacciatore at Santa Caterina, La Grotta at Roccalbegna, 900 at Semproniano, too many to mention in Scansano and Saturnia, I keep a selection of business cards at the house for ease of booking. Local wines are Morellino (a very good small organic producer can be found at Villa Patrizia, who will happily do tastings) and Monte Cucco, and the world famous Brunello di Montalcino is 50 minutes away. Olive oil tasting at prize-winning Monte Nero (provides oil to both Fortnums and Asda!)The area is a favourite with cyclists. Many important Etruscan sites as well as mystical Monte Labbro with its mountaintop hermitage, and of course the lovely medieval villages. I particularly recommend shopping in medieval Roccalbegna, with its array of small shops that together with the Monday market provide just about everything in a manner reminiscent of days gone by.

I live locally and will be very happy to help with settling in and any other information.
