Come and explore the dramatic Alpujarran landscape; the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains; visit the scenic whitewashed villages, sample their locally cured hams, pottery and handwoven rugs; admire the Moorish architecture in Granada, Cordoba & Jaen. Ski in the morning, discover sunsoaked Mediterranean beaches in the afternoon and sample local restaurants and tapas bars in the evenings, fiestas abound!
Alternatively, come and chill! Lounge by the private pool, take in the panoramic mountain views and the perfumed blossom from our orange and lemon trees, planned planting and neighbouring groves. End the day with a fine Rioja, the company of cicadas and marvel at the crystal clear, starlit sky. There is always manana.....
For the active: coast and beaches can be explored along the Costa Tropical, Motril and Salobrena are about 30mins with the larger towns of Almunecar about 45 mins drive, Nerja about 55 minutes, all offering several excellent fish restaurants. Waterskiing is available at Marina Del Este.
Distances from the villa:
Orgiva is about a 5 minute drive or 25minutes walk from the Villa. There is now a taxi for pre-booked trips. The pretty, characterful whitewashed ‘pueblos’ (villages), of Pampaneira, Bubion and Capiliera are about 16km. - the highest, Trevelez a little further, the coolest in the summer with a mountain stream running through it, famous for its' drying hams.
Spain's most visited attraction, the stunning Alhambra Palace with its' beautiful (can thoroughly recommend a visit) Generalife gardens are on the outskirts of Granada. The Palace dates back to the time of Moorish occupation, and is an easy drive of about 1 hour. It is worth booking tickets in advance as it can get busy especially during High Season... and the tickets are timed.
For less culture but more retail therapy, there is a newly opened enormous shopping centre on the way to Granada, with many top name shops inside including Zara, clothes and Home. The Body Shop and even a large Primark with a good home section.
Orgiva: has a selection of banks, internet cafes, shops, health food shops, bars, restaurants and an impressive Baroque church. Every Thursday there is a colourful market with local produce, arts and crafts, something for everybody. There is very much an ‘alternative’ feel here, why not pamper yourself by booking one of the many complementary health treatments available, such as massage, aromatherapy or reiki? There is also an English Toni and Guy trained mobile hairdresser, our daughter, to hand!
The area is perfect for climbers, walkers, cyclists, ornithologists, artists and photographers alike.
It is served by a network of walks linked by the GR7 and old mule trails which lead through the national park. It is often possible whilst following one of these paths that it can lead to a sighting of a soaring golden eagle and an abundance of wild flowers. Bolted and free climbing are also available within a 10 min drive (the local ibex likely to be your only spectators) or there is further choice available in surrounding areas. Alternatively, experience the breathtaking beauty of the mountains on horseback, 2-8 hour hacks are available, or, for those who prefer wheels, quad and mountain biking is also an option. Paintballing, archery and paragliding can also be booked locally.
For the more tranquil moments, consider taking the waters at the spa town of Lanjaron 12km away, the Moroccan Baths in Granada, or visit the Buddhist Monastery of Osel Ling where planned retreats are possible.
Granada airport is approximately 1 hour, Malaga and Almeria airport are about 2hours. Malaga has the widest choice of airlines including Easyjet and British Airways.
Car hire is strongly recommended to optimise your sightseeing experiences throughout your stay in the Alpujarras..
A basic welcome pack of food and information will be provided on arrival. Special requests can usually be catered for, such as health foods and organic produce, even celebratory honeymoon packs! Owners live nearby and provide on site maintenance and regular pool cleaning and are able to offer helpful local information and booking advice, enabling you to maximise your enjoyment of this special area.
Special Mention: this is a baby friendly villa! Having become grandparents in 2008, we are now able to loan a highchair, babygym, babywalker, babybath, babybouncer, travel cot etc, all to hopefully enhance the holiday for every family member!
We look forward to seeing you soon!
