About Fraser Wilkinson

Hi, we are the Wilkinson family from South Wales. There's Fraser, Julianne, Conor, Finn and Iona. Obviously we had to name the Villa after someone! We both work full time so enjoy the time off to relax. The first year we spent 3 weeks at the villa and ended up very much into the local pace of life. The kids really improved their swimming that year as they used the pool all the time.

We had the villa built by a local architect who is now also our agent in Balchik. The villa is an investment but it's a long term thing for us and we've got another two to build at some point. Once you've seen the area you can see the potential and why we've fallen in love with it. It's still got a way to go but much of the older period stuff is really interesting to see. Catch it while you can.

Fraser Wilkinson purchased this villa in 2006

Why Fraser Wilkinson chose Bulgaria

This area of Bulgaria is great if you want to avoid the big holiday resorts and the constant hustle and bustle. Balchik gets quite lively in the summer with plenty of nightlife and excellent resturaunts and bars but it's a much more relaxed atmosphere than the resorts. You can chill out with the locals down by the boardwalk and get cheap beer from the stalls or go upmarket to one of the seafront establishments. The seafront is a strollers paradise with a town beach and about 1km of bars & resturaunts, entertainment leading out to the historic Palace which has a fantastic old style Bulgarian eatery and wine dealer.

The old town has many less expensive places to shop and relax and you can get great local food from the stalls if you like to cook for yourselves.

What makes this villa unique

The location of the villa allows you to easily retreat up the hill to the edge of town and enjoy some secluded private time. It also has fabulous view and we like nothing better than morning coffee and evening drinks on the viewing terrace. The kids love the pool and it's an easy house to relax at since there's nobody overlooking you but you have neighbours for a bit of local interest.

The walk up from town will keep you fit but hire a car and there are many other great beaches to go and visit and Albena has to be a destination for kids at least once. It's an old style resort with a great beach. The best bit is right at the Balchik end so head there first. Check out the access to the 3 world-class golf courses nearby, Black Sea Rama, Thracian Cliffs and Lighthouse.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We really enjoyed our stay in Balchick, described by one of our cab drivers as a "real" town. Villa Iona was a delight to stay in, having everything we needed to make our stay as comfortable as possible. As the villa is positioned so high up, the views and scent from the herbs and grasses are lovely and a real treat to wake up to every morning." Helena Morris

"We thought we should write and let you know how great a time we had both in Bulgaria and staying in your lovely villa.

My wife is desperately missing waking up to looking out over the sea in the mornings." Michael Parnel

Beautiful, Modern Villa with Private Heated Pool and Breathtaking Sea Views
average rating of 3.25 based on 5 reviews

Overall enjoyed stay but please inform landlord of points listed.

  • 3 of 5

We have just returned home and thought it would be good to mention some points ref Villa

1. No hot water 1st floor bathroom (we made do using other bathrooms)

2. kitchen sink leaks water we put pot under sink during stay.

3. out of the 5 sun loungers around pool only 2 worked 3 were damaged on arrival as Villa sleeps 10 this is not Ideal.

4. Patio set/chairs insufficient having to carry chairs up and down to balconies.

5. On the Wednesday of second week woke up to find the pool cleaning pole missing after pool man had been not ideal as unable to remove leaves from bottom.

6. Kitchen pans/utensils could be upgraded some basics missing.

7. Iron left at property in dangerous condition bare wires showing (we didn't use)

8. On arrival my youngest daughter walked into glass on top floor which shattered cutting her hand and feet (this was easily done one of the adults also did this on arrival on bottom floor without shattering the glass, glass was very clean) I recommend pulling blinds across in future so only the door is visible. My daughter had to have her hand glued and spoilt her holiday as she was unable to get hand wet until middle of second week. This could have been a lot lot worst ! and I am very surprised that toughened glass is not fitted ?

9. Blinds in first floor double bedroom are faulty and do not open and close property making access to balcony poor.

10. Taxi drivers refused to take us up the hill to property from town taxi rank not good when you have young children

Overall I think the property needs some TLC some small changes listed above would make a big difference.

Regards Paul

Luxury?? not in my opinion.

  • 1 of 5

The realisation that we had not booked a luxury villa became apparent upon arrival. I have rented villas in many places but never before have I been greeted with- " the crockery and cutlery are in the dishwasher. After moving the garden furniture, the majority of which was broken, from the living space we emptied dishes and cleaned kitchenette. The bedrooms were not very clean and the blinds in one room were stuck open so we cleaned one room and just used that. The balcony which was advertised as a lovely spot to sit and view the sea was covered in bird droppings so we tended to avoid it. The customer service was invisible, for example, the largest bathroom had no hot water though strangely it did have old newspapers used as wallpaper. Unable to elicit a response to my phone calls I emailed the owner in UK for help. Upon returning to house that evening we discovered that someone had been in, not to repair water heater in large bathroom but to turn off heater in second bathroom. Wish I could publish pics of third shower room, more of a dirty little closet actually. This house was selected mainly for the benefits of "Heated Pool" what a joke , water temp. never exceeded 65f , 5 degrees below the safe temp. for the elderly to swim in. There were despite this, some good things about Bulgaria in general and Balchik in particular, the people were friendly and the food was great and good value indeed. I have reviewed quite a few eateries on Trip. I will surely return before long but not to this house.

Owner's Response: It was very disappointing to receive such a poor review and my apologies have been made. This was a very early rental for us this year and perhaps the new contract staff were not on the ball. The pool had only been filled for a few days so it was clearly not as warm as the guests would have liked but I do believe solar heating is the best and most environmentally friendly method. I shall be visiting with my family shortly and will ensure that the villa and equipment are in the best of order. As the reviewer said Bulgaria is a great place to visit and I'd like to be able to help you see the best of it so please be assured this won't happen again!

Excellent villa

  • 4 of 5

Enjoyed a really relaxing stay in Villa Iona, on our first trip to Bulgaria. The villa is really comfortable, well maintained and in a quiet area. The pool is great, and the terrace areas around it very private, and we spent many happy hours relaxing and listening to Golden Orioles and Cuckoos calling. It was lovely to be able to jump straight into the pool after the walk back up the hill from Balchik, where we enjoyed several wonderful meals on the seafront. The bedrooms and bathrooms are spread out over several floors meaning there is plenty of space for guests to have some space if there are a number of people staying. There are great views from the roof terrace and top floor rooms - we had a lovely time!
