Renting the whole domaine gives you exclusive use of all the facilities and grounds, including the pool. The farmhouse and the old barn can accommodate up to 16 people in 8 double or twin rooms, with en-suite bathrooms to 6 of them. The old barn is very large and has plenty of space for groups to enjoy time together and separate areas to do your own thing as well.
The Whole Domaine - exclusive use for up to 16 guests
Our 55 acre estate is a haven of exceptional peace and tranquility 1000 feet up into the rolling foothills of the Pyrenees. We offer generous and comfortable accommodation and a luxurious sense of space and calm.
The Barn has a huge living room, lovely stone dining room, big well-equipped kitchen, and 6 en suite bedrooms. You can eat, rest, and play in the sheltered courtyard, or the big terrace with open views over our wheat and sunflowers and the rolling countryside. You will have use of the heated pool and all the gardens, orchards, and grounds of the estate. Large areas are left undisturbed as a haven for wildflower, bird, and other wildlife. We can arrange a variety of services, and we will talk you through the huge range of things to do and see in this beautiful region.
At the end of the drive you arrive at our open courtyard, built in the local golden stone. The Barn fills two sides of the courtyard. Double doors lead to a huge living room of 170 sq m, with big sofas and rug in front of the open fireplace and a second sitting area at the library end, near the pool table. More double doors and picture windows open on to the large terrace, set up for summer dining, which has lovely views over our own fields and the rolling hills and valleys of the area. There is a separate stone dining room with a second open fireplace. The wonderful and well equipped kitchen has oak work tops, a large gas hob with two electric ovens, two dishwashers, an American style fridge/freezer, and double sinks. Upstairs are 6 en suite bedrooms, simple but comfortable, most with king size beds. They look out either onto the courtyard or the fields, and rise up about 4 metres to the exposed beams of the Barn. We provide good quality linen and towels for everyone. The whole place combines our own more modern style with the best of French tradition - old floor tiles, stone wall, and lots of exposed timbers.
Outside, you will have use of our 11 x 5 m solar heated pool, which is in its own walled garden, and all the gardens and grounds of the Domaine. For those that like outward bound activities there is plenty of cycling, hiking and riding on the horses that graze the farm. More photos and reviews are on the owners web site.
There are exceptional views of the Pyrenees from our land, as well as our local 12th Century village. You can walk all day straight from the door, through the gentle hills and oak woods, and will rarely meet another person. Sweet Mirepoix, 15 minutes away, is one the most beautiful and complete early medieval market towns in France and where we go for shopping and eating out.
There is a vast range of sites and activities within easy reach in every direction. South are the Pyrenees, the Cather Castles, the ancient cave paintings of the Ariege region, and lakes and wildlife parks. East is Carcassonne, perhaps the finest medieval citadel in Europe, and beyond that hot hills of the wine land of the Corbiere and Roussillon, and of course the Mediterranean. North are the Montagne Noir, the Canal du Midi, and famous abbeys and churches. West is Toulouse, an ancient and sophisticated city. And everywhere there are the glorious views, ancient old market towns and villages, open countryside, and peace.

Vivienne is a UCL historian, writer and cook. She lives at Le Puget with members of her family. We are interested in people, animals and the local wildlife, books, music, history, society, and the world around us. Le Puget is our way of expressing our love of France and the countryside, good food and living, and our pleasure in offering hospitality.
Vivienne purchased this Barn in 2008
Why Vivienne chose Gaja-la-Selve
This is an area of great tranquility and beauty, but easy to get to and with easy access to the sea, cities, and the rest of France. We love the warmth of the people and the warmth of the weather, the quiet roads and pretty market towns, and the spectacular sights of the Pyrenees mountains like the Cathar Castles, the caves and rivers, the Canal du Midi, elegant cities like Toulouse and Narbonne, the vast range of Languedoc wines, and Andorra. We also like to walk for miles from our door through the rolling fields and oak woods that surround us.
What makes this Barn unique
Le Puget used to be a well known and very popular country restaurant, known for many miles around for its charm. Its played an important part in many people's lives, as a venue for parties and celebrations over the years. We enjoy that history, and want our guests to feel the same sense of peace and relaxation - and pleasure - that many people have found here over the years.

The very best
Sometimes holidays don't take care of the important stuff, like family, food, peace, rest, fun and togetherness. I can safely say John and Janie provide a landscape where the important stuff (not just John's wine selection's) is fulfilled in abundance. Difficult to say its a home from home but if I did have a 55 acre home it would be something like Le Puget. Go if you want to smile and relax, be welcome and feel as though you have returned to an old friend. Don't go if you want a beech, nightly entertainment and water slides. If you do go, walk out to the fields with a bottle of 'in region' red and enjoy and sunset
In a word - fabulous!
Accommodation, hospitality, views and to top it all - weather!
We were staying as part of a large party of wedding guests and the layout of the very comfortable accommodation made it easy to stay alongside people who we did not know.
John and Janie were excellent hosts who went out of their way to make our stay special.
I would recommend Le Puget for anyone wanting to relax in near idyllic surroundings. My only regret was that I did not arrange car hire as transport is definitely needed to make the most of the surrounding areas.
Thank you Jane for this generous review. We are so pleased the wedding went well for you. With best wishes, Janie and John
'Spark rekindled' A strange title but a remark made by son that sums up the healing effect of our all too short stay at le Puget. Family holidays require there to be ingredients to suit all and these were undoubtedly present.
The Domaine more than lived up to its descriptions. The pool was much enjoyed by all, aesthetically as well as physically. The information supplied, travel directions especially, was detailed, accurate and extremely helpful.
It is a beautiful place in a lovely region with an atmosphere suffused with history and tranquility - 'and wine' my husband reminds me as I get carried away! Yes, we enjoyed some gorgeous wines there thanks to John's expertise and the 'arrival' supper we requested was truly delicious.
The owners, John and Janie, were kind and considerate at all times and their seamless efficiency and good taste contributed enormously to the pleasure of the holiday.
There is lots to do in the area but it is such a delightful place that one can just sit and unwind in privacy with a book if so inclined. We very much hope to return in the not too distant future.
Thank you Linda, what a delightful review. We are very grateful. It was good to meet your family and you will be very welcome next time you come. John
Feels like home
I absolutely love Le Puget! Each time I visit, I feel as though I am coming home. I’ve stayed in the Auberge a couple of times with other families, and we loved the huge living spaces with table football, acres of books and lots of sofas to curl up in, and the views from here are amazing. Very importantly for me, there’s a well equipped kitchen with all the equipment and gadgets I could ever need. We enjoyed the enormous log fires during the cold March evenings, after daytime walks in the wonderful countryside in glorious sun-shine! As I have back and neck problems, Janie, our host, suggested I sleep in the luxurious Tempur bed with Tempur pillow. Absolutely perfect! I slept better here than I do at home. When I last visited in October this year, I stayed in the Farmhouse, perfect for just one family. The two bedrooms were large and comfortable and oh joy, one had a huge Tempur bed! The apple festival in Mirepoix was a great experience, with enormous apple sculptures in the main square and surrounding streets. Sitting here with a beer watching the world go by was just bliss. The hosts, Janie and John, truly want every guest to get the most out of their stay. Theirs is genuine Hospitality. I hope I shall be able to visit Le Puget with friends and family for years to come.
Thanks so much - we are very pleased you enjoy le puget so much and look forward to seeing you here again. John
A wonderful discovery
We were so lucky to find Le Puget - it was the first time we had all ventured to this part of France and the region and the amazing property really made this a great holiday for our thee families. We were made to feel well and truly welcomed by John and Janie, both properties were of exceptional quality and as keen cooks we were overwhelmed by the standard of the equipment, and incredible kitchen facilities. The extensive library of books, CDs and old record collections made it as easy to unwind indoors as well as explore the area. As hosts John and Janie really put themselves out, sourcing cycle rides, canoe trips and even lighting the outside pizza oven which for the 7 children was a complete highlight. This is a very special place of exceptional quality and we all look forward to returning in the not too disant future. with best wishes Alison, Adrian and Jamie Richardson
Thank you Alison for this kind review. Its much appreciated.
There is a huge range of things to see and do within an hour or less in every direction.
Magnificent Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi are two World Heritage sites, both close to us. To the south are the Pyrenees for walking and climbing, the Cathar Castles, lovely Abbeys and churches, and great caves and lakes. Closer still there are local beauty spots, lakes, and rivers for swimming, boating, kayaking, horse-riding, and fishing all within 30 minutes drive.
The cities of Toulouse, Beziers and Narbonne and all easily reachable, and the long beaches and coastal fishing towns of the Mediterranean start just over an hour's drive away. And of course there are beautiful medieval villages and towns all around, many with their own markets.
Toulouse airport is about an hour away, Carcassonne (Ryanair) about 30 minutes and Montpellier or Perpignan within two hours. There are major TGV stations at Toulouse and Bezier, both within an hour and a station at Castelnaudary about 20 minutes away. Car hire is recommended as there is no rural public transport other than taxis.
Shops and restaurants start at Fanjeaux, about 10 minutes drive, and at Mirepoix, 15 mins, which is one of the most lovely small market towns in France.
