Casa do Moinho (House of the Windmill) is situated high in the hills a few miles from the village of Paderne with fantastic 360 degree views towards the coast and inland. Moinho is ideally suited for relaxing family holidays, but with it's peaceful, countryside setting as well as for golfers, ramblers and artists. Due to the hillside location, it has cooling breezes in the summer. Moinho is a split-level Moorish style villa which has some modern elements, but still retains some of the more traditional, homely Portuguese features. It is a good base for those wishing to experience the real Algarve with several traditional and European restaurants nearby. Moinho is within easy reach of the coast, good beaches, numerous golf courses and shopping facilities.

As BSky have literally pulled "the plug" on receiving UK satellite TV in Portugal we have this month ( April 2014 ) install a new system via broadband from a company called UKTVPortugal. All BBC,ITV Channel4 etc plus many more channels can be viewed on our flat screen TV together with the new option of catch up TV.

About Mrs N Holden

The Holden family is Mike, Niki and three daughters who all love our time at Moinho just relaxing, swimming, cycling, sunbathing, reading and enjoying the culture, food and wine of the area. With everyone working at an alarming rate nowadays a few days away in Portugal allows the batteries to recharge. The rest of the family are always on the go too, so an opportunity to stop the clock somewhere we know is a real bonus.

Why Mrs N Holden chose Cerro Grande

As a family we have holidayed in the Algarve for many years and when the opportunity came to invest in a holiday home there was only one location for us. We have always loved this area away from the coast and the madding crowds and developments but still within a short distance of the airport, coast, shops and other facilities. All around we have lovely views, restaurants and places to visit. We looked for some where where we had space, peace and privacy - somewhere that we could switch off from the busy life we leave behind in England. When we found Moinho we knew it was a place we could call home. We have worked hard to constantly improve the house with little touches and facilities that make it our home but without spoiling its rural nature.

What makes this villa unique

Moinho is only 40 minutes from Faro airport, and 20 minutes from a selection of beaches, golf courses, shops and there are some great local restaurants and wines to enjoy. The property is spacious inside and out, private and has great views inland and down to the coast making the most of its hilltop position. We can get to major towns very quickly, even Sevilla in Spain and Lisbon are within relatively short drives. It doesn't get better than this.

Notes on accommodation: All bedrooms have a portable electric fan, a hairdryer and an electric anti-mosquito machine. For comfort and space a sleeping capacity of 6 is recommended but an extra child/adult can be accommodated on a put-u-up in bedroom 2 . If 2 families of 4 (2 adults/2 children) wish to hire the villa we can provide an inflatable double mattress for 2 children. There is a cot with linen and highchair at no extra cost. Logs for the fire and up to 3 Portable electric heaters . Pool heating cost is in March/April/May/Oct £160pw June/Sep£120pw July/Aug £90pw. Pool heating is not available from Nov to Feb . Free WiFi access now included . Portable air con unit and aircon in main bedroom. Welcome pack with English tea/ coffee/milk/water/toilet rolls/ complimentary wine and beer to start your holiday with. We are a non-smoking villa. Outside: Patio doors from the kitchen and lounge lead out to a covered dining terrace with a modern, rattan set of dining table and chairs together with comfy sofa, armchairs and coffee table for the terrace area. This leads onto the pool area with a heatable pool 10 x 5m with steps and depth of 0.75 - 2m with a poolside shower. There are 6 sun-loungers with cushions and 2 sun umbrellas. This goes onto the barbecue area with a built in barbecue and table and chairs. There is a storeroom with pool toys and games. Steps lead down from the pool area to a Petanque/boules pitch (boules sets provided). Utility Room: 2 x fridge/freezers, washing machine, clothes-dryer, ironing board and iron. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid Maid service weekly but extra can be arranged for you for a fee. Bedlinen and bathroom towels provided and changed weekly. Gardener and pool man call at least once or twice a week in high season. Cot/ bedlinen and highchair available free of charge Other: Dining room with large table seating 8 and 2 sideboard

We had such a wonderful relaxing holiday in this lovely villa . My teenage children were ecstatic at having a room each with an ensuite and a private pool .My son was particularly impressed that he got the use of a PlayStation and English TV. We were so relaxed we actually only left the villa for two day trips and food shopping . Having members of the family with dietary requirements I was very pleased to have a fully equipped kitchen (with a wonderful view) where I could actually cook properly . The villa had everything you could possibly need from pool toys and towels to kitchen equipment !! We definitely hope to return again to watch the sun set over the amazing views !!

Fantastic Break for Older Kids

We have just returned from another fantastic holiday at Casa do Moinho. This is a lovely villa in a wonderful location - well laid out & beautifully appointed.

First visited several years ago when my two boys were younger, and have returned several times since as the whole family enjoy the large pool, the spectacular views, and the surrounding area.

My boys are now much older & we thought they wouldn't fancy another break with mum & dad - however, when they knew where we were going they jumped at the chance.

Casa do Moinho is a large villa with plenty of space. With three double bedrooms all en-suite, plenty of room inside and out,and wifi as well, everyone can have their own space when they need it.

Unlike other recent holidays elsewhere, the lads could chill when they needed to, and join in the family time for swimming, meals & outings. So for a family with teenagers, you don't have to live in each others pockets & tread on each others toes. This made for a perfect break.

Can thoroughly recommend spending time here - whatever the age of your party & particularly if you have older children.

There are also plenty of lovely restaurants nearby, places to visit, good roads throughout the area - what's not to like?

Fantastic holiday

Wow. What a villa!! The standard was first class. The views were breathtaking and getting up to it took us into the heart of little local hamlets which was amazing

Our 5th year in the algarveband by far the best villa we have had. When we were there they were experiencing very high temperatures , with both younger generation and older generation the vast shade areas at the villa were fabulous. Can't recommend this villa highly enough!!!!

A fantastic holiday!

We booked to stay at the villa for a week in August, with friends, who have children. The villa was perfect! We each had our own separate rooms, all with en suites, which allowed us to all have our own space and privacy. The family occupied the two opposite rooms at one end of the corridor and we had the large room, with the balcony overlooking the pool, at the other. The house was extremely clean and well presented, the bathrooms have recently been done to a very high standard.The kitchen had everything you could wish for. As we had children with us, we prepared most of our meals at the villa and we were very grateful for the vast array of serving dishes and crockery, which meant we didn't have to wash up after each meal and could hide it in the dishwasher! . The outside area was beautiful, we loved spending our evenings admiring the view from the balcony. The children loved the pool! We had paid extra for it to be heated, although as the temperatures rarely went below 36c while we were there, we probably didn't really need to have bothered. The villa, although being away from the main hustle and bustle, was a pleasant drive from many of the main towns you may want to visit. We loved the beach at Alvor and enjoyed looking at the yachts at Vilamoura, both within an hours drive. We would definitely book again and would recommend this villa for anyone planning on holidaying with friends. Overall, a fantastic holiday!

Holiday heaven

What a fabulous place to relax and unwind!

We chose the villa from the photos and reviews but seeing the villa when we arrived exceeded our expectations. There were 3 of us staying and we all enjoyed using the pool, we didn't bother having the heating on and did not need it as the water was a lovely temperature. The villa was very spacious, clean and had everything that you could possibly need, we did not find the keys to the pool room for a couple of days, it might be worth mentioning it in the information book. The views are really outstanding and we ate all our meals out on the terrace when we were dining in.

There are lots of lovely restaurants around but our favourite was Xerem near Paderne, very friendly staff and outstanding food.

Thank you so much for letting us stay in your beautiful holiday home Niki, we will be back!!

A tranquil holiday

The villa is set on top of a hill with far reaching views, the neighbours are not very close so your holiday is very peaceful with very little noise from other holidaymakers, also it is totally private and not overlooked, and has benefitted recently with upgrades to two of the bathrooms, which are of a very high standard. Everything that you could need is provided, the kitchen is very well equipped, and has a utility for your laundry needs. It should be noted though that a car is a must for this location, the nearest town is Paderne which is small and quaint. Larger supermarkets can be found at Faro and Guia. We can thoroughly recommend this villa, we have been twice now and very much hope to visit again in the future.

The famous sandy beaches of the Algarve are within easy driving distance. These include Quinta do Lago,Vale do Lobo, Falesia,Gale and further along the coast towards Praia do Rocha and Cape St Vincent and to the Spanish border.


Faro airport is 40 minutes from the villa via the EN125 or A22/IP1 (motorway) All major airlines including budget airlines fly into Faro from many major towns/cities in the UK and Ireland as well as European cities. Car hire is essential. The nearest train station is at Tunes with connections east to Faro town, west to Lagos and north to Lisbon (3hrs).


Paderne is 5 minutes away by car and Quinta do Lago/Vale do Lobo/Albufeira about 25 minutes. Lisbon/Seville are about 2-3 hours by motorway. Large supermarkets can be found in nearby Ferreiras, Loule and Albufeira with a modern shopping complex with multi-screen cinema and food court at Algarve shopping near Guia around 20 mins drive away.

Further Details:

Paderne has it's own castle ruins which can be seen lit up at night from our patio. The village is one of the few remaining traditional Portuguese villages left on the Algarve. Meander around the narrow cobbled streets and stop for a coffee and pastel de nata at one of the numerous cafes around the village square.The Moorish capital of Silves, poetic Alte and Loule are worth a visit together with the Roman ruins at Milreu and palace at Estoi. Or venture inland to the cool mountains and spa at Monchique and climb up to the highest point at Foia 903m above sea-level for the fantastic views. Many towns and villages hold monthly or weekly markets. Loule has a particularly good gypsy market on Saturdays together with the covered market in the centre of town. There is a wealth of sporting opportunities along the coast, including water-skiing, paragliding, banana boats, jet-skis, deep sea fishing and boat trips along the coastline. You can swim with the dolphins at Zoomarine and between Quarteira and Portimao there are a number of water parks with varying waterslides and shutes. Other family attractions include Algarve zoo at Algoz, carting near Almancil and safari jeep tours which go high into the Algarve countryside often via dried up riverbeds. For the cooler months you can partake in long,off the beaten track country walks/rambles.

Booking Notes:
A non-refundable deposit of 30% of the rental is due to secure the booking,with the balance and a breakage deposit of £300 payable 6 weeks before departure. If a booking is made within the 6 weeks the full rental plus breakage deposit are payable in full. The breakage deposit will be banked and then refunded, less any deductions, within two weeks subject to a house inspection.
5% discount on rental for all returning clients for 7 nights or more

Changeover Day:
Changeover days are usually Thursdays but can be varied. Arrival after 15.00 (3pm) and vacate by 10am on morning of departure but can be flexible if no clients are in before or after your stay.

Notes on prices:
Prices shown are for the property per week in UK pounds. Shorter rentals - 4 days min and long term rentals are available. If rental periods cross seasons the rent payable is at the appropriate rate.Payment can be made by BACS - prefered method- by cheque or new for 2017 using a Paypal account . No cash payments are taken
5% discount given on rental prices for all returning clients throughout whole season March to November for 7 nights or more.
