Quiet, Rest, & Relaxation on Historic Pemaquid Harbor

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1.25 Baths, (Sleeps 5)

You are invited to enjoy one of the prettiest and most peaceful spots on the East Coast (or anywhere, for that matter). We have found Pemaquid Harbor's perfect mix of sea, breeze, woodlands, history, and quiet to be the perfect getaway tonic. The pace is peaceful and low key, not noisy and fast-paced as at commercial resorts.

The house is situated on three quarters of an acre right on the harbor. The view is spectacular, as the photo will attest. A path leads down to our dock where we have approximately 75 feet of ocean frontage. The nine- to 11-foot tide leaves raises and lowers our private dock, runway and float high and dry twice a day.

The joys here are many, but modern conveniences are relatively few. There is no television, but there are plenty of books. For your convenience, there is a CD player/AM/FM stereo. High-speed WI-FI is provided, but there is no resident computer (and a wireless card or Ethernet cable port on your computer is required). The additional 'one-quarter' bath listed above is an outdoor (but fully enclosed) shower for communing with nature. The indoor bath includes a tub and shower.

The three bedrooms include two with queen-size beds and one equipped with a set of bunk beds. Additional sleeping space is available on a full-size sleep sofa in the living room.

In short, this is a family summer cottage designed to provide a comfortable and casual vacation equal to the spirit of Maine itself. No pets and absolutely no smoking, please.

Everything we hoped for!

  • 5 of 5

My family (kids 4, 8 and 10) stayed on a November tidepooling expedition. It was incredible! So great to come back to this cottage everyday. Clean, well furnished and stocked (games, books, pantry). Peter was super responsive and friendly. Gorgeous view to wake up to in the morning, especially after arriving in the dark. A+ accommodations and hospitality need I say more?!

We had a very delightful 3 days....beautiful view, well maintained property. We wanted a private setting with an ocean view for a weekend getaway and this was perfect. Hope to be back again.

Scenic, Relaxing Coastal Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We love this small cottage and have visited 4 times. Recently remodeled, it still retains the cozy feeling of a traditional family cottage. It is perfect for two or three persons, fine for four or five.

The setting is very peaceful. The cottage is situated on a hill, underneath pines, oaks, and maples with a path leading down to the dock. There is a spectacular view from the picture window across the water of the Pemaquid River and John’s Bay. You can watch lobster boats chugging about, checking their traps. The tree-lined road leading to the cottage is off the beaten path, sparsely-traveled, and perfect for morning walks.

We like that the overall Pemaquid area is not touristy, yet there are plenty of things for tourists to do. The Pemaquid Point lighthouse, on a scenic rocky promontory, is about a 15-minute drive away. The Pemaquid Beach is about 10 minutes away. The area is dotted with art galleries, craft shops and antique stores.

There are about a dozen casual restaurants nearby, including Pemaquid Seafood located less than a quarter of a mile down the road from the cottage. We especially enjoy comparing the lobster rolls from a number of these restaurants, served dockside on outdoor picnic tables.

One of our favorite activities is exploring the many hiking trails in the nature preserves established by local conservation organizations. The trails take you through the forests, marshes, rocky coastlines of Maine. Another highlight for us is the live music performed in small venues like restaurants and public halls all throughout the area.

For a greater concentration of tourist shops and restaurants, you can go to the charming village of Darmiscotta, about 20 minutes away. To turn the tourist activities up another notch, go to Boothbay Harbor, about 45 minutes away.

We keep returning because this is a place where you can really relax at the cottage or be as busy as you wish pursuing the activities of area.

Beautiful place for a relaxing vacation

  • 4 of 5

The views are gorgeous from this secluded cottage. The cottage itself is old but clean and very homey. We would definitely consider renting again should our vacation plans take us again to Maine

The Classic Maine Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This cottage presents an opportunity to experience a truly classic Maine vacation. The location is so perfect that you may never want to leave the cottage as the view is so lovely. It is pleasant to just sit to watch the lobster boats working in the picturesque harbor under the watch of Fort William Henry.

However the cottage is located in an area where it is possible to experience all the things that a proper Maine vacation should include.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse (the lighthouse that appears on the 2003 quarter) is just minutes away and is well worth a visit or two. Being in Pemaquid means that you are in the heart of Lighthouse Country, with 10 other lighthouses – 13 if you count all 3 small lights at Doubling Point -- in the immediate area.

You will be practically next door to a lobster co-op and within easy distance of several other working harbors.

You are also close to three unique villages: Damariscotta, Wiscasset and Boothbay Harbor. All are pretty and charming and we usually go into Damariscotta frequently with occasional forays to Wiscasset (great antiques) and Boothbay (whale watching and sailing cruises). All three villages offer terrific restaurants. Be sure to check out the restaurants in Round Pond and Bristol as well.

It is worth making a trip to Hallowell, in between Damariscotta Mills and the state capital of Augusta. In addition to being known as a northern jazz nightspot, Hallowell has been identified as "Maine's Antique Riverport.” It is a really fascinating town.

I have only covered a fraction of the activities in the area. There are also many hiking trails that are appropriate for different skill/fitness levels and ocean kayaking is very popular. Next year we plan to bring our canoe so that we can canoe in the Pemaquid River.

The cottage itself is very comfortable and homey. And Beth and Peter have always been the best of hosts/landlords. I am so glad that we found this cottage and we so look forward to our annual trip. It is a wonderful break.

Our family has been staying in the Pemaquid Penninsula area for over 15 years at a small motel & cottages. When that became tiresome about five years ago I chanced upon this cottage on VRBO. We took a chance, fell in love and ended up becoming long distance friends with the owner. Everything is as stated, spotless and well worth the money for the relaxation it provides. I can't speak of the tub and shower because we have always used the outdoor shower. We particularly enjoy the "Golden Hour" just before sunset in the Adorondack chairs on the lawn overlooking the harbor with our favorite adult beverage in hand. We look forward to our two weeks there in 2013 and beyond! You will not want to go back to the real world after staying here.

If you visit do not miss the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum, a two foot guage railroad in nearby Alna. ME especially if you have young children. The volunteers there will make you feel like family. Favorite restaurants include the Samoset and Shaw's Wharf in New Harbor and Francine's in Camden. For breakfast we get cinnabons at the Cupboard nearby or eat at Ship's Chow Hall on Route 1 in Wiscasset. Pemaquid Beach is the nicest beach north of Bermuda though the water is a tad chilly.
