About this property

Ancient Villa with Private Pool and Sea View

The House was built in 1875 near the old Convent of Santa Maria dei Martiri. In 1400 a small village started to grow around the convent and became famous as a market where local products were sold every Saturday. Being Saturday the market–day, the village was named ‘Forum Sabati’ – "Mercato del Sabato" (Saturday Market) - later simply renamed ‘Mercato’. Our family villa looks out over the sloping coast and is surrounded by a beautiful and big garden with secular trees and colourful varieties of flowers together with terraced olive and vine cultivations viewing the Isle of Capri and the Amalfi Coast. An extension of 110 hectares of woods and a large green area densely planted with olive groves which gives a delicious extra-virgin olive-oil produced according to old traditional procedures complete the magnificent scenery.

The Estate Il Pilaccio nel Cilento is located at about 600 meters (2000 feet) above sea level in a position dominating the ancient village of Castellabate and the sea of the mermaid Leucosia.
Its privileged location among olive and green chestnut trees allows its guests to shelter from the heat of the summer months, offering complete privacy and tranquillity. It is perfect for families: there are large outdoor spaces available for children to play while adults relax inside or outside the house, cheered by the sound of the cicadas.

The Villa Il Pilaccio nel Cilento is a 500 square meters (5400 square feet) - stone house with three floors and two terraces, and is arranged to accommodate up to 12 people. In some of the rooms, additional two beds or cots for children -up to 6 years old- can be provided (additional cost applies - see Rental terms). Most of the rooms are paved with terracotta tiles, and the furnishings include some antique pieces.

A big kitchen and a large dining room are located on the ground floor. The airy kitchen is equipped with four-burner gas cooker, gas oven, refrigerator with freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, iron and ironing board, microwave, Italian-style coffee-maker, kettle, toaster, and other small appliances. A complete kitchen pack is also available for all guests.

The dining room has an authentic Italian style fireplace made of stone and a large wood dining table where guests can enjoy their meals, with a great view of the garden.

On the first floor, we have 3 double bedrooms and a bedroom with two single beds, 1 lounge, 1 TV room and 1 dining room. The furnishings of the rooms are warm, welcoming and comfortable and also include some antique pieces; views of the garden, the countryside and sea can be enjoyed through the Juliet balconies.
On the first floor there are 2 bathrooms: the master bathroom is very spacious and equipped with a washbasin, a toilet, a shower and a hairdryer; the second one has a washbasin and a toilet.

On the second floor there is one double bedroom and a bedroom with two single beds, 1 lounge and 1 TV room. The rooms are furnished in a similar style and all enjoy great views. Two bathrooms are available with a similar arrangement. Two terraces with a top view of the surrounding countryside and the sea will leave you breathless and give a great vantage point to enjoy the sunrise and sunset.

The huge garden extends for about 3000 square meters (32000 square feet) and is full of flowers, trees, planted terraces with olive trees, fruit trees such as kakis, walnuts, hazelnuts, chestnuts, mulberries, plums, figs, apples, pomegranates. You are welcome to pick you own ripe season fruit straight from the trees!
In the garden there are various relaxation areas and wide patios paved in stone from which you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the valley and of the sea. The area is equipped with pavilions, brickwork barbecue and many other facilities for adults and games for children. Under the pavilions, you will find tables and chairs, perfect for an outdoor breakfast or meal.
By the garden you will also find a bathroom which equipped with three washbasins, and one toilet.

In the garden there is a splendid private infinity pool which provides a magnificent view of Capri, Ischia, the Amalfi Coast and a broad view of the whole arch-shaped Gulf of Salerno and of the greenery. The pool is approximately 45 square meters (500 square feet), and the area equipped with deck chairs and an external shower.
After dusk, far from the city lights, it is a pleasure to look up to the sky and witness the emotional stars show, sipping a glass of wine. There is no better way to overcome stress after a busy and tiring year at work! The villa will give you unforgettable moments and create enduring inner peace!

The price includes sheets and towels, including pool towels, free wifi connection, water, gas and electricity. The final cleaning price is 150 euro for the first two weeks, for any additional week 50 euro will be added and will be paid in cash at check out for a change of sheets and towels once a week, including pool towels.

Please be informed that during your stay, one-day events such as weddings or other celebrations may be arranged in the villa. In this instance, the garden and the pool will be closed for use. We apologise in advance for any inconvenient this may cause and to thank you for your understanding we will invite you for dinner/lunch or offer an alternative recreational activity.

You will find markets, butcher, baker and many other stores less than 500 meters away from the villa. Great restaurants are located within 3 km (about 1.8 miles). In Castellabate, 12 km (about 7.4 miles) from our villa, there is a very nice seafood restaurant with a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea. A special price for our guests is guaranteed!

You can explore the many sandy beaches that are within a 15 minute drive from the villa, enjoying the beauty of the Cilento coast with its smooth hills and charming green rocky shores.
If you are interested in history, you will have the opportunity to visit the archaeological areas of Paestum and Velia, the ancient monastery of Padula, and the many medieval towns such as Castellabate, Agropoli, Vatolla, San Severino di Centola, etc..
For those who love nature, the marine reserve of Punta Licosa is a must sea. For an amazing day out, you can take the ferry Sea-Metro and easily reach Capri, Amalfi, Positano and Ravello.
Walking, cycling or horse riding, cooking classes and boat trips are just some of the activities that we will be glad to arrange for you. If you want more info, please visit our website - www.ilpilaccionelcilento.it (travel section) - there are 2 pages - cultural tourism and Cilento activities – where you can find all additional details.
You will also find pictures and information in the travel section.

Beautiful Home and Setting for a Peaceful Vacation
Our family had the privilege of staying in this lovely villa and town for a week. This is the perfect location if you want a peaceful spot for a vacation - lovely grounds, pool, views, and antique furnishings. The town had the friendliest people in the two stores that we met in Italy as well, who were very helpful despite our limited Italian. We also booked a dinner the first night at the villa and a boat tour of the Cilento coast through the VRBO, which were both highlights of our trip. Despite temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s during the day, we were comfortable in the villa (which has no air conditioning). All highly recommended if you want to have a less touristy experience in Italy.

Fantastiskt boende i pittoresk liten bergsby
/Ewa SvH

Great place to enjoy the piece and quiet of the Cilento region
Huge property with beautiful garden and pool with a view. We are a family with three teens and usually we are wanting for space, not here. The villa/castle is huge, 6 bedrooms and two sitting/dinning rooms on each of the two upper levels. The owner was wonderful during check in and helpful with directions and would check on and clean the pool daily. We visited early June and found that most of the restaurants nearby were only open on weekends. There are three well stocked grocery stores in the village though and the restaurants in the more touristy areas (Castebellate etc about 25 minutes away) were open daily.

Francesca’s villa is a beautiful place and ideal for a large group. It’s high up in a small village with a few amenities - supermarket and shop for basics. There’s a bigger village a few kilometres away and a car is essential. We loved our stay and hope to go back one day!

About the host

Hosted by Francesca d'Antonio

Host profile image
Francesca is an archaeologist with a passion for nature and culture of the Cilento. Her work has enabled her to discover the charm of this land, rich in history and ancient culture. For several years she has been working as a farmer other than an archaeologist. She produces excellent extra virgin olive oil, wine, chestnuts and many other products, typical of the Mediterranean diet, that she loves her guests to enjoy.

Why they chose this property

I love to spend long and relaxing periods in Cilento, Unesco world heritage. My estate is located in a small hillside village, away from the stress and bustle of the city. It is surrounded by a large private garden where you can experience unforgettable moments by the pool, the scent of the flowers and the beautiful sunset on Capri and the Amalfi Coast. I also enjoy preparing traditional and tasty recipes utilising the products of this land accompaining with local wine.

What makes this property unique

It is perfect for families: there are large outdoor spaces available for children to play and its privileged location allows its guests to shelter from the heat of the summer months, offering complete privacy and tranquillity.
You can reach beautiful beaches, such as Agropoli, Acciaroli and the Punta Licosa marine reserve. Walking, biking and horseback riding along many paths that lead from the sea to the surrounding hills is also possible. You can easily reach the archaeological sites of Paestum and Velia, visit places rich in history such as the Padula’s Charterhouse and many medieval villages such as Agropoli and Castellabate.
Some of the most famous places in the world: Pompeii, Naples, Sorrento, Capri, Ischia, Positano and the Amalfi coast are all reachable on a day trip.
