The Villa is next to the sea, perfect for a quick dip, in a quiet suburb of Old Mokosica, 5 minutes walk to local good value shops and bars, occupied mainly by Croatians, with very few tourists in evidence.Villa Mirak has a really peaceful and restful atmosphere. An excellent bus service is close by running to all major locations. We would describe the area as " spectacular rustic". All of the neighbours are very friendly - some own their property as a holiday home, so a few properties are not occupied all the year around. Part of the property comprises an old family chapel, which is now used as a dining room with an amazing atmosphere. Outside there is a Renaissance style restored garden with its own natural well. Villa Mirak is 2 miles from the ACI Marina where there are excellent restaurants, a good supermarket and a superb otside swimming pool. The Old City of Dubrovnik is 8 miles from the Villa, with the Port Town of Gruz 4 miles away. The Old City is a major tourist attraction, as it has a Venetian atmosphere, with a large range of restaurants and bars and excellent cultural activities including concerts and clubs.

Paul Sampson purchased this villa in 2005
We visited Dubrovnik in 2004 because we were fed up with the Salcombe weather and looking for another location to keep a boat with a sensible climate. The cliche love at first sight applies. We acquired the boat in 2004 and, against all advice, the house in 2005. The house has its own boat moorings, is by the sea, is a listed 400 year old building (called a monument in Croatia). After firing the first architect who did nothing for 4 years, we found an Australian with a gift for project management, who had a team of Croats working for him. Eighteen months later it was all done. The area is genuinely Croatian. Its rustic, no tourists. The surrounding houses are either permanently owner occupied or summer houses for people living in Zagreb and other inland cities in the Balkans.
On hot days of which there are many in summer, swim in the sea right outside the Villa. Five minutes walk to good low cost shops and bars used by locals, not tourists. Three minutes walk to the bus stop with buses every twenty minutes to all major centres. Hire car not needed. No air-conditioning needed except when unusually hot.The Villa is in an area favoured by the aristocracy in the 1700/1800's because it is cool in the summer. We can sit outside and just watch the yachts sail by. We can read by the well out of the sun. We can barbecue, cook in the kitchen or dine out. The house is so restful. Maybe because it has the mark of a previous church/chapel, now our dining room. We love the Old Town, just to walk in and dine. We have made many friends with our neighbours who are incredibly sociable - beware the local lethal brews, which will be offered at any time of the day!

We had an amazing stay at Villa Mirak. It was so peaceful - yet so much life in the area - Taits August 2013
After leaving a very cold and flooding UK we arrived to perfect weather which stayed all week. Had a lovely stay. Enjoyed cycling as well as the three island cruise and trip to Montenegro – both booked with Amico in Town and got picked up and dropped off which was great. Did not miss not having a car.
Favourite restaurant – Lady Pi Pi - Wetherbys
We stayed at Villa Mirak with our 2 yr old son. Its the first time we'd traveled abroad with him and Villa Mirak was the perfect place to stay. The house was full of home comforts, with a quiet garden perfect for relaxing (or letting off some steam!) The local bus service was reliable and made it easy to travel around the area without need for hiring a car. The local shops were also fantastic, a short walk away and great value. The managers at Villa Mirak made sure nothing was a problem, if we needed them we were only a phone call away. We loved everything about the Villa and Croatia and we will certainly be visiting again. We cannot recommend this highly enough!
Special interest holidays:
Our Villa Manager is extremely knowledgeable about Dubrovnik's rich cultural history, which may go back as far as the Greek Empire! He will be delighted to accompany you around the many ancient buildings and monuments in the area and share his knowledge and anecdotes with you. Power boat hire can be arranged, (boat as pictured on the site or similar). A Day Skippers' License is required or a skipper must be hired. Guests who have done this have said it was wonderful to go offshore and visit the beautiful islands surrounding Dubrovnik. Even better to be picked up and set down at your front door by boat! There is a cultural link here as well, as some of the islands have a rich heritage again stretching back to occupation by the Greeks. There are Greek, Roman and Slavic ruins to be explored. Additional bikes are available for hire in Dubrovnik during the holiday season.
Distance to the coast is 10, yes 10 metres. There is a superb outdoor swimming pool about 2 miles away at the ACI Marina. The best beaches are at the Islands, offshore. These can be reached by ferry from Gruz (4 miles away), or renting a boat that can be moored at the Villa, if required.
The Villa is 15 miles from Dubrovnik International Airport (about 25 mins drive). You only need a hire car, if you are reluctant to use the excellent buses and/or you wish to travel further afield beyond the Dubrovnik area. There is off road parking for two cars. Local shops and bars are 5 minutes walk, larger shops in Gruz (4 miles) and 15 minutes by bus.
Old City of Dubrovnik is 8 miles way, the Port of Gruz is 4 miles away, the ACI Marina is 2 miles way. Mostar is 40 miles away and Medjugorje 60 miles away. The Elaphite Islands by boat are between 3 and 10 miles offshore.
Local shops, bank and bars within 5 minutes walk. Larger shops in Gruz,(4 miles). Excellent choice of restaurants at ACI Marina (2 miles), Gruz (4 miles and Dubrovnik Old Town (8 miles). There are some magical restaurants right on the sea where they tie up the lobster below the tables for you to pick (Zaton Mali).
The must do's in the Old City of Dubrovnik are, in no particular order; walk the walls at sunset, ride the cable car at any time, wander round the cathedrals and palaces whenever, attend the outside concerts given by visiting and local Philharmonic orchestras in the evening, window shop in some amazingly high fashion retailers, just people watch... and not mentioned... sample the very Italian pizzas. Just a peaceful stroll from Villa Mirak, is the beautiful 14th century Franciscan monastery at Rozat, dwarfed by the tail end of the Dinaric Alps, running through Croatia from north to south. From certain points, further around towards the ACI Marina, it is possible to see a Croatian Flag painted by Dubrovnik residents high up on the cliff face. This was done when Montenegran troops occupied the area in the 1990's war. On the steep banks of the river directly opposite Villa can be seen the remains of the old Dubrovnik Sarajevo narrow gauge railway line. This is now a superb walk accessed from Gruz. For pictures of the line and river (with no road bridge) visit. The owners of the villa next door used to live in Sarajevo and travelled on the line. The place to swim in Dubrovnik is Sunj Bay at the Island Lopud. The Island is steeped in Greek and Roman history. Many bring their boats here to swim and dive. Some come by ferry and explore the island on foot. There is a legend about the beach. If you swim here with your loved one you will stay together for ever. Our experienced managers can arrange all the trips and tours you may need, including Krka National Park, Mostar, Montenego, Split and Medjugorje which is an amazing and spiritual place to visit.
