Overview

About the property

Cottage in Llanrhian, Nr. Porthgain, St Davids, Pembrokeshire Coast Path, Pembrokeshire, Wales - Peaceful Location, 5 Mins From Coast Path, 10 Mins Walk To The Beach, 15 Mins Walk To Pub

The Watch cottage is one of the most well loved and iconic cottages in north Pembrokeshire. It sits on its own, up a private lane, far away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It's a perfect romantic retreat as there's so much privacy. It was built over 300 years ago and has such thick stone walls, that even in the roughest storm you can't hear the wind! It's in a perfect location, six miles from St David's, with its shops, restaurants and beaches, including Whitesands. You are a mile from the harbour of Porthgain, close to the world-famous blue lagoon at Abereiddy and probably the best beach ever - Traethllyfn. The visitor's book is full of love for this very special cottage. It's probably the smallest cottage in the world, so perfect as a romantic retreat.

It's just undergone renovation. The original beams and ship-lapped wooden walls and ceiling are painted in Farrow and Ball paint, local artists' work adorns the walls and welsh pottery & rugs are sourced from Solva & Melin Tregwnt.

About Alexandra Tilley Loughrey

I've been holidaying in this part of Pembrokeshire since I was a baby. Luckily my husband fell in love with the place and even more luckily we were able to buy the Watch - a very special and unique cottage. We know all our lovely neighbours up our secret lane and would spend most of the year here if we didn't have to work elsewhere!

What makes this cottage unique

We love the fact that the cottage is in such a special, secluded location, away from the hustle and bustle - especially in high season. But we also love the fact that it's so close to all or favourite beaches, coves, St David's, the cliff path, the Shed fish restaurant at Porthgain...

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: This is probably the smallest cottage in the world. It has the most amazing seaview & is totally secluded, in its own garden, up a "secret lane" , with no other properties in the "grounds". Being over 300 years old the door-frames are low. There is no central heating, but there are storage heaters & inglenooks with woodburners. If you don't like lighting fires, this is not the cottage for you, because storage heaters are not as efficient as central heating - and the sheer joy of The Watch is stoking up the fire and getting all cosy next to it. We are pet friendly, but please do not allow pets on the furniture. Outside: There's a simple private garden, with outdoor table, chairs & bench. The cottage is totally detached, surrounded by fields and runs alongside a single track lane. Parking for one car. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The cottage will be clean for your arrival, including all bed-linen and tea-towels supplied.

Lovely property and location,but...

  • 3 of 5

Five stars for the property and location but only 3 stars for the attention to details! When you pay the extra for a one-off property you expect the little things to be right! It’s the first time in a long while where we’ve been somewhere that where it says towels it doesn’t include bath towels - also the towels it did include was only 1 tea towel and 1 hand towel. Also there was no hot water in the bathroom and the shower head flopped around as the pole was loose and would not stay in one position! Also as already mentioned the little details were missing - with cobwebs on the main light fixture and only 2 of the 3 bulbs working and the 2 bedside lamp light bulbs covered in so much dust they didn’t make much difference whether on it off! But cottage was cosy and warm!

Simply magical

  • 5 of 5

Wow! There are not enough words!!! We arrived exhausted and broken and looking forward to a holiday. We left like new people. The cottage is so full of charm and so peaceful. The door to the cottage acts as a photo frame to the beautiful view outside. We love wood burners and it was lovely to have a fire in the evening. The weather was amazing every day. The surrounding area is trul breathtaking and the lovely cove at porthgain afforded me some wonderful meditations. We will definitely come back. It was worth the drive. The owners are great and make it known that they are a phone call away if help is needed. I was in two minds about writing a review as I feel inclined not to share lol. If you only do one holiday in a lifetime you should stay at Watch House. We didn't want to leave.

Loved the cottage..setting..location. Would possibly benefit from a 'deep clean' spring clean☺

Owner's Response: So glad you loved it. Thanks for your lovely comments in the visitors book too. Am rather surprised & saddened by your "deep clean" comment as not sure what you mean. If I was looking at booking the cottage I'd be put off by that comment! Though always happy to act on anything specific that people mention. We've never had a cleaning complaint before & believe Alison works really hard to make the cottage as welcoming as possible so it's like a cosy home & as you said in the visitors book "what a discovery". Best wishes, Alexandra

Fantastic little cottage

  • 5 of 5

A great place to stay with a lovely sea view. Close to St Davids and the Welsh coastal path so a good base for walks. It is small but very comfortable, well furnished and welcoming. It is on a small country lane but easy to find thanks to the excellent directions provided by the owner. Only downside was that we did not want to leave! Two good restaurants in nearby Porthgain (particularly the 'Shed' bistro). Would certainly recommend it to friends.

Best place in the world

  • 5 of 5

Well how beautiful is this amazing cottage...the whole cottage has a calm ambience and the fires just glowing make you feel instantly calm... No tv, no clocks (we had no idea what the time was!), just birds singing and the odd horse neighing... We didn't see a shop for 4 whole days either, loaded the car with slow cooker, food supplies, wine and ciders. That was us for 4 wonderful days.

This cottage is the most amazing tranquil place on earth... Go there... It should be on everyone's bucket list...we are going back in the autumn... Can't wait.

Thank you Alexandra for being a kind owner of an amazing cottage.

Linda and Chris.

Booking Notes:
We're happy to negotiate for short breaks or last minute offers at quieter times.

I ask for a deposit to secure the booking, then balance six weeks before, when I send the directions etc. I prefer bank transfer as we live in the sticks, but if you're worried a cheque is fine.

Changeover Day:
Friday changeover, but in low season, especially if only booking a short-break, this can be flexible.

Notes on prices: this website has recently added a 20% "service fee", so it looks like our rates have gone up. They have not! If you pay me direct I will not add on the ridiculous amount of money that the company is trying to make! If you look under RATES this gives the realistic price (without the 20% that they add on).

Prices include all electricity and hot water. Starter pack of coal and logs also included. Short breaks from £225.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
  • 100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
