About Paul Gardner
We are the Gardner family, from Epsom, Surrey in England. Our family has owned the property since 1988 when it became our parents cherished home. It is now our shared family holiday home. With personal items, functional and decorative, including many books (reference and fiction) we want the house to be tasteful and feel warm and welcoming, like a proper home. The house offers what we look for ourselves when we are renting holiday accommodation - a place of comfort, character and something rather out of the ordinary. We are based in England but we visit Voisines as often as we can. In our absence we are lucky to have a local housekeeper / caretaker who lives nearby and tends to the house and garden as if it was her own home.

Why Paul Gardner chose Voisines
Our parents found the house by chance and fell in love with it. Driving through the Yonne to the South of France for a holiday, their car broke down in a picturesque old village nestled on the lower slope of a hill, surrounded by fields of sunflowers. They found they were in a place called Voisines. The car had stopped outside the last house in the village street. On the gates was an 'A Vendre' sign (For Sale). They peered in and saw a large courtyard with an old farmhouse and ancient wood-framed barn. Wishfully joking that it was just the kind of place they wanted to retire to they noted the phone-number of the owner. Once in the South of France and returning home all they could think of was beautiful Voisines and the house and garden they had seen... A year later it was theirs!
What makes this House unique
Though just 10 minutes from tree-lined avenues & the provincial grandeur of Sens, itself only 1 hour from Paris by train, Voisines is a world apart from the crowds and rush of urban life. With its landmark church & quiet lanes of courtyarded houses & barns, mostly hundreds of years old, including our house, Voisines seems a haven of peace, charm and character. Our shared pleasure is to spend time in the tranquillity and privacy of our courtyard garden or to pass under the fig tree, up through the door to the orchard garden for the far views, or to catch the sunset. Our youngest relatives (10 and 11) love to roam the village on bikes or foot, & thrill at the daily arrival of the 'sweet-shop' - the Boulangerie (bakery) van. In Winter -the log fire, a good book, delicious local food & wine.

comfortable home from home
We all really enjoyed our stay in Voisines, the area was picturesque, very quite.
even though we were on a main road with some occasional tractors, it really felt tranquil.
the kitchen was well stocked with utensils and was great to cook in, the beds very very comfy. we very much enjoyed the figs and walnuts from the garden and the birds were such a joy to listen to. Lots of books and DVDs to go through, which was a bonus. we would very much recommend a visit.
a morning coffee from the local café/restaurant was perfect.
we visited a few local areas, pont sur Yonne having a nice market and a nice broncante.
I hope you waved at the tractor drivers, they are all very friendly. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay.
Lovely place to stay, great Base for exploring the region
Beautiful scenery, house was very comfortable. We loved the enclosed courtyard and the friendly little bar in the village
Wonderful property in a peaceful location
A lovely property with so much space for everyone in a lovely village. The owners have thought of everything in order to make your holiday a successful one, from table tennis , boules etc, to books and music. All equipment is provided to make it an easy transition from your home to the holiday home. Nothing was missing. Such beautiful and peaceful surroundings. We enjoyed driving through the villages, seeing all the lovely sunflower fields out in bloom. Paris was a quick hours train ride from Sens. Fontainebleu, less than an hours drive, so all in all some lovely locations to visit. Weather wasn't kind, so we weren't able to enjoy eating outside which would have made for the perfect holiday, but that was out of our control. House very clean and very well maintained. Pleasure to have been a guest there.

Une agréable maison de campagne dans l'Yonne
Au bout d'un petit village, la maison est calme, avec une belle entrée sur cour privative (jardin un niveau au-dessus, accessible par un escalier au fond de la cour).
Nous (2 familles avec enfants en bas âges) avons passé un très agréable week-end près de la cheminée, à déguster de très bons bourgognes (allez le week-end au Leclerc de Sens : belle sélection, bons prix et caviste très sympa).
La campagne aux alentours est superbe avec la lumière d'automne sur les arbres colorés...

Very nice family week-end, healthy place
The indications to find out the location were given a few days before arrival, as well as all sorts of indications related to the house and the surroundings. Really nice to get these info before arrival, that helped us a lot!
Really nice house, charming: we felt like at home :) When the weather was good, we enjoyed a lot the barbecue and the outdoor games, and had the chance to enjoy the garden as well: really nice for Eastern, the kids had a great time looking for the chocolate eggs! To sum up: all was as expected, and even better with the nice flowers waiting for us on the table, as well as the Champagne in the fridge. Thanks to Anne and Paul for this very typical and enjoyable stay, we would recommend it to our relatives!

Home comforts in a rural setting
The stay was facilitated by the receipt of early and very useful local information by Paul and Anne (the owners). The personal communication was much appreciated and a marked improvement on booking arrangements encountered on other sites. The property was very homely with a distinct rustic feel and well equipped with modern appliances (the quality sound system with multiple speakers throughout the downstairs rooms was unusual in our experience - but excellent!). The master bedroom with a super king bed, paneled walls and a myriad of lamps was very comfortable indeed. The village has a welcoming restaurant/bar and is well placed for travel into Sens and many other local towns. In that regard the information folder completed by the owners providing both mileage and a synopsis of each town was used by us to inform our daily plans. Overall an excellent stay for us and recommended,
Situated in the heart of France, Burgundy has navigable rivers, canals and lakes. On the River Yonne at Sens (10 mins from Voisines) there is rowing, sailing and water-skiing. At Villeneuve-sur-Yonne (approx 20 mins) windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking are popular and the large lakes of 'Forêt d'Orient' national park near Troyes (33miles +) offer boating and fishing, and have a sea-side feel with sandy beaches for swimming and sun-bathing.
Channel Tunnel (4 hours), Dieppe (3.5hours), Paris Charles de Gaulle & Orly airports, (50 – 60 miles). Free parking at Sens station & frequent direct trains to Gare de Lyon & Gare de Bercy (fast train is 55mins) make Paris easy to reach. Use of a car is recommended as Voisines is not directly linked into a public transport network though taxis are available from Sens. Nearest car-hire is in Sens (Avis etc). Cars can be collected from Sens station by arrangement with the car-hire companies.
Old Burgundian villages within a 7 mile radius include Soucy, Fontaine La Gaillard, Saligny, Fleurigny, Thorigny. Sens is 6.5 miles. Other nearby places of interest: Provins-World Heritage site (18miles), Pontigny Cistercian abbey (31miles), Troyes (33miles), Auxerre (36miles), Chablis (39miles), Noyers-sur-Serein (44miles), Chateau Saint-Fargeau (46miles), Vezelay-World Heritage site (61miles), Fontainebleau palace (37 miles), Palace of Versailles (79 miles), Disneyland Paris (58miles).
The local area has a rich scattering of pretty villages & hamlets, easy bike-rides or walks through deep forest & fields. Riding, Go-Karting nearby. For supermarkets, main shopping, banking etc the ancient small city of Sens (popl 27,000) is just 10 mins drive. By the river Yonne, still with remains of its Roman town wall and medieval buildings, Sens boasts the first Gothic cathedral in France, an excellent museum & award-winning park. Plus a range of shops, cafes, restaurants, cinemas, theatre, hospital, swimming pool and free parking under the huge plane trees in the avenue encircling the old town. A year-round highlight is the twice-weekly market (Mondays & Fridays) spilling onto the streets with clothes, shoes, baskets and bric a brac. Food lovers are spoilt for choice with dozens of stalls selling mouth-watering local food products (“produits terroir”) delicious Yonne cheeses (Soumaintrain, Chaource, Delice and Epoisses), foie gras, venison terrines and patés, jambon persille, artisanal breads, honey, almonds, seasonal fruits, wild mushrooms and vegetables. Many special places of interest are within easy reach: the lovely Provins (with fabulous 'spectacles' for children), Vezelay, & Noyers sur Serein (all UNESCO world heritage sites),Troyes, the Cistercian abbey at Pontigny (associated with St Thomas a Beckett, as is Sens cathedral), Chablis; the ancient Fosse Dionne at Tonnerre legendary home of the ‘serpent basilic’; Chateaux Saint-Fargeau, Versailles & Fontainebleau and of course, Paris itself, Champagne and Disneyland Paris. Further afield the vineyards of Beaune and Southern Burgundy - near enough for a day trip. For treasure-hunters, every Sunday from April to late October there are brocantes (car boot sales), also called “vide grenier”. Each village has at least one a year, Voisine's is in early June. These are fun for all the family, a great way to explore the area, eat local 'saucisson' & maybe find a real bargain!

Notes on prices: For rentals of less than seven nights there are additional charges, please ask for a quotation. Prices for the property per week include bedlinen, towels, electricity, gas, wood. No additional charge is made for cleaning but we do ask guests to leave the house reasonably clean and tidy. We ask for a small damage deposit which is swiftly refunded upon inspection of the property. Changeover Day: Changeover day is usually Saturday but other days may be possible - please ask.
